Open Practice with Kelvin Sampson:
Basketball Drills, Intensity, and Culture NEW DVD

Discover the drills, intensity, and culture that have made Kelvin Sampson a winner everywhere he's been

• Discover the "Crack Back" strategy to help the helper take away the most direct passing options for the offense on dribble penetration
 • Learn four sideline inbound plays in the "Slice" series to catch the defense in screening actions for multiple scoring opportunities
 • Includes more than 15 drills that you can use for transition and half court defense

with Kelvin Sampson,
University of Houston Head Coach;
former assistant coach with the Houston Rockets and Milwaukee Bucks;
former head coach at Oklahoma, Indiana and Washington State;
2x National Coach of the year

A four-time conference coach of the year at three conferences, Coach Sampson had his greatest success while head coach at Oklahoma. He posted over 280 wins at OU in 12 seasons as the head coach, leading the Sooners to the post season each year. His teams won three consecutive Big 12 Tournament Championships, and shared the regular season title in 2005. His best season came in 2001-02 when he led OU to the Final Four, and followed that up with a trip to the Elite Eight the next year. He was named the NABC National Coach of the Year in 2002. The 2015-16 season marks the 27th year Sampson has served as a head coach, amassing over 500 wins during that time.

Get a front row seat and watch as Kelvin Sampson runs his Houston team through three preseason practices in preparation for international competition in China. Whether it's defense or offense, Coach Sampson uses the whiteboard regularly to go into detail on his team's actions. It's one thing to watch a team practice, but it's another to have a coach break down the drills and exercises for you.

Disc 1

Coach Sampson puts a special emphasis on Houston's defensive system. He provides you the philosophy, demonstration and drills to help you implement a great half court defense and turn your team into great transition defenders.

Team culture is reinforced through four warm up drills that expect players to operate with intensity while developing their ball handling, passing, and shooting. Sampson uses the 2-on-1 (plus 1), 3-on-2 (plus 1), and 4-on-3 (plus 1) drills to work on transition defense. Each of the drills in this series has a trailing defender to simulate a real game scenario. The main points of emphasis with transition defense are to talk, stop the ball, and match-up. You can also use these drills to help your players brush up on their decision making while playing with an offensive advantage.

The Cougars' staff implements the shell drill to teach the program's defensive principles and work on guarding specific actions (pin downs and staggers). Coach Sampson uses the whiteboard to go into detail about help defense and helping the helper. The team works on rotations on a baseline drive, defending basket cuts, and stopping the slot drive.

Coach Sampson places high emphasis on rebounding in this session. He uses multiple rebounding drills to help build a high level of toughness with his team.

On offense, Houston's full court attack is introduced with their Weak and Strong actions. Whiteboard segments are included outside of practice to describe Houston's offensive and defensive philosophy, explain practice drills and concepts, and teach a play for late game situations.

Open Practice with Kelvin Sampson

Disc 2

In practice two, Coach Sampson focuses on installing several major components in his offensive system. Players rehearse three baseline inbound plays and four sideline inbound plays in addition to two new half court set plays. Coach Sampson has his team run the sets 5-on-0, then later against defense. These sets come from the same alignment, making it more challenging for your opponents to scout them.

Coach Sampson also runs half court actions, which were introduced in the first practice, versus defense. Running these sets against a defense allows you to see reads being made and demonstrates how you can take what the defense gives you.

In practice three, Coach Sampson continues to build his defensive system with an added emphasis of denying the passing lanes through 5-on-5 half-court scrimmages. He also introduces two full court pressure strategies off of a made free throw. Fist is the Cougars' full court man-to-man defense and Double Fist is full court man pressure where the first pass in is automatically trapped. These two defenses are intended to create turnovers and/or increase the pace of the game.

This video will give you a great look into the philosophies, drills and sets that Coach Sampson uses in practice!

"I really enjoyed (disc 1), from individual build up, to a transition build up, to a defensive principles to be learned into the offensive actions that he is trying to incorporate and lastly a late full court action to get a 3-point shot. The viewer will gain drills that they will be able to use with their team after viewing. Easy to implement and your team will gain a better understanding of the game of basketball." - Customer Review

Basketball Open Practice with Tom Izzo:
Man-to-Man Offense, Practice Drills, and Scouting NEW DVD

Take a look inside Tom Izzo's transition offense, man and zone offense and 2-3 match up zone defense!

• Attack zone defenses with set plays that put your opponents into situations they can't guard
• Speed up your fast breaks using drills that will help your players understand their roles and available scoring options
• Limit interior penetration and cover all immediate passes using the 2-3 Match Up zone defense

with Tom Izzo,
Michigan State University Head Coach; 3x National Coach of the Year,
2000 NCAA Tournament Champions; 7 Final Four appearances;
7x Big Ten and 4x Big Ten Tournament Champions; 3x Big Ten Coach of the Year

Tom Izzo opens up access to a Michigan State practice so you can see how one of the best coaches in college basketball builds his team into a regular NCAA Tournament contender. In this open practice session, you are treated to a Michigan State practice devoted primarily to transition offense, man-to-man and zone offense, and installing a 2-3 match up zone defense. Coach Izzo also discusses his philosophy on practice planning and shows you how he teaches his players in film sessions. Even with cameras present, Coach Izzo holds nothing back!

Film Session

Sit in on a film session that shows the level of detail that a future Hall of Fame coach uses to analyze his team. Plays from the previous practice are displayed as Coach Izzo corrects flaws in ball and foot placement, player positioning, ball handler's line-of-sight, variations in speed and timing and situational recognition.

Transition Offense

Learn how to incorporate a variety of scoring options such as dribble hand offs, ball screens, and wide pin downs in your transition offense with the Five Man Break drill. You will also see how to take advantage of outnumbered fast break situations in the 3-on-2 Continuity drill. These drills will help you play faster and convert in transition for additional points each game.

Open Practice with Tom Izzo

Player Development

Train your perimeter players to shoot on the move with great technique from different locations on the floor. Meanwhile, post players demonstrate four scoring moves from the low post and high post. The Three Man Shooting drill has become a favorite of Coach Izzo to get players game-like shots through actions run in Michigan State's offense. You will see how this drill can be applied to teaching dribble hand offs and side ball screens.

Zone Offense

In a 5-on-0 half-court dummy offense setting, Coach Izzo shows you how to break down a zone defense with four set plays that target specific weaknesses of a zone defense. For example, in Arm Chop, the top two zone defenders are targeted for an open 3-point shot at the top of the key. The four plays are then on display in a full 5-on-5, half-court scrimmage setting as Coach Izzo continuously critiques timing and spacing issues within each set.

2-3 Match Up Zone Defense

Through breakdown drills, you will learn how to rotate players so that all immediate passes are covered. Adjustments can be made to also demonstrate how rotations change when the offense tries to overload the defense. Coach Izzo emphasizes technique and player communication on "bumping" defenders with the ball at the wing. These concepts are expanded to 5-on-5 controlled scrimmages so players can learn how to adjust to ball movement as a collective unit.

With so many aspects of Spartan basketball on display, this practice has nearly everything. Positional (guard/post) developmental drills, breakdown drills for transition offense and zone defense, and 5-on-5 zone offense (sprinkled with a bit of man-to-man sets as well) are all covered. This video is a peek behind the curtain into a practice featuring one of the greatest coaches of this generation.
