Digital education tool helps achieve ‘fair game for all’

As part of its continued commitment to the development of basketball through the use of online educational tools, FIBA has launched a fifth DVD for referee education, one which focuses on proper conduct on the court.

The International Basketball Federation strives to maintain the highest possible standards of officiating as well as enhance basketball programmes around the globe. To that end, it has produced Volume 5 in its series "Guidelines For Referee Education".

"Fair Game For All" is primarily aimed at game officials, but this important teaching material is also likely to prove invaluable for coaches and players who want to get a better feel for the correct calling of behavioural and contact situations – undoubtedly a crucial dimension of the game.

With 10 players perpetually moving around the court at any one time in a relatively small space, physical contact is inevitable and consequently how effectively this is refereed and interpreted by those it affects is fundamentally important.

A major consideration is ensuring referees have the knowledge and experience to enhance the flow of the game by not penalising incidental contact but also making sure they are equipped to make calls for the good of the game when teams are disadvantaged by contact from their opponents.

It is widely accepted that each and every team has a right to do its best in an attempt to secure victory. However, it is essential for this to be done within the spirit of the game by embracing sportsmanship, a sense of fair play and showing the necessary levels of mutual respect and acceptable behaviour.

In addition to the loyal and full co-operation demanded of coaches, players and referees, there is little doubt an enhanced understanding of how contact should be officiated can help better achieve the all-important proper conduct of the game.

FIBA is committed to providing quality support and education for all members of the worldwide FIBA Family with the online DVD clips package just one tool being utilised to help achieve this aim.

All clips from "Fair Game For All" - as well as all other clips from the other four DVDs in the "Guidelines for Referee Education" series - can be found here.

Freeview Play Search spearheads second generation FIBAtv platform

FIBA on Thursday announced the launch of the second generation of the FIBAtv.com on-line streaming platform, redesigned with a number of additional and improved features.

The central new feature – the unique new Play Search function – enables users to search for clips of their favourite player within the ever-growing FIBA Archive of games, according to a total of 17 play categories including Dunks, Layups, 3 Pointers, Drives and Rebounds. This unique service, which gives viewers access to and control of many of the greatest moments in the history of the international game, is completely free of charge.

The archive will be constantly updated during the upcoming FIBA World Championships and prior to launch, FIBA had amassed over 45,000 clips, stretching back nearly 20 years of FIBA World and Continental Championships as well as selected club competitions.

Featured players include Pau Gasol, Kobe Bryant, Luis Scola, Dirk Nowitzki, Andrew Bogut, Hamed Haddadi, Yi Jianlian, Hedo Turkoglu, Dejan Bodiroga, Shaquille O’Neal, Toni Kukoc to name but a few. Stars from the women’s game such as Hortencia, Lauren Jackson, Lisa Leslie and Elena Baranova are also included in the Play Search archive.

The share functionality enables users to make their play searches available through all the major social networking sites, including Facebook and Twitter, as well as by simple email.

Among the number of other upgrades, FIBAtv.com has reworked the navigation system, making for a more user-friendly experience.

Patrick Baumann, FIBA Secretary General and IOC Member explained: “The concept of the FIBAtv.com online platform, is to enable basketball fans wherever they are to access live and on-demand coverage of full games, as well as highlights and interviews.

“Combined with the extensive coverage of this summer’s forthcoming FIBA World Championships, the revolutionary new Play Search function represents yet another step towards making FIBAtv.com an unbeatable destination for all followers of international basketball,” he added.

The FIBAtv.com online platform also incorporates FIBAAsiatv.com, FIBAAmericastv.com, FIBA Europetv.com, FIBA Africatv.com and FIBAOceaniatv.com.
