Entrenador Superior Baloncesto

Preparación para el día de partido
Por Mike Dunleavy and Jim Eyen

We also review the opponent’s depth chart (players available at each position), thus anticipating their substitution pattern and how it may effect our rotation. Our trainer drops in and provides a brief injury report on our players and the status of any lingering issues. We then put aside our defensive concerns and discuss how they may defend us and what we can do to attack their schemes, traps and coverage.

The player’s film session begins with a synopsis of the opponent and their tendencies. We elaborate on their strengths and weaknesses as a team and individually. We announce our starters for the game along with the defensive match-ups. We encourage input and interaction from the players regarding any insight, questions, or suggestions regarding anticipated coverage. After viewing the 15-20 minute film edit we entertain any additional questions then move onto the court.

At this point we “walk-thru” the opponent’s actual plays. The numbers of plays vary from team to team. However, the average is 8 to 10 plays which include side out of bounds and baseline out of bounds. We have determined these to be the opponent’s most frequently run plays and/or their most important plays.
We demonstrate how to cover these plays and at times, provide alternative coverage in case we need to employ a back-up plan. Again, we value input from the players knowing that along with “contribution comes ownership”. We review the tendencies of our opponent regarding presses, traps, or defensive schemes they may use to cover our important plays. At times we will also “walk thru” some of our offense in order to refine our execution or apply subtle changes to existing plays.

We conclude the morning session with shooting drills and free throws. The shooting drills are geared toward shots taken out of our play sets. In most cases we split the team into “Bigs” and “Smalls” and work on each end of the floor. This game day practice or “Shoot-around” as it is referred to is usually held on the actual game court, thus you are limited to two baskets.
We find this routine to be an efficient way to shoot the most number of shots in the least amount of time. After a prescribed number of free throws we then adjourn. The coaches will remain afterwards and assist any players who want additional work; rookies and veterans alike, often utilize this opportunity.

We then reconvene in the early evening and begin the pre-game ritual. The coaches arrive at the arena between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m., while the players begin to arrive around 5:00 p.m. The early arrivals consist of mostly younger players and rookies. However, some of the veterans opt for extra court time as well. Prior to any work in the floor, the players check into the training room for ankle taping, treatment or other training needs they may have.
The coaches are also available for last minute individual film sessions. A common practice is to sit down with players and view briefly an individual edit of their defensive match-up for that night. At this point in the process, we try to keep it simple, but remain focused.

With 45 minutes remaining before game time all the players are in the locker room. Since 5:30 a full game copy of our last game vs. our opponent has been running on the big screen for those who choose to watch. At this time the players begin to look over the white board which has been made visible in the last few minutes. Due to the open access of the NBA locker room to the press and other credentialed people, the strategic notes on the board have remained covered until the 45 minute mark when the doors are closed to outsiders.
Shortly thereafter our team meeting begins. The meeting starts with an additional 10-15 minute film edit as described earlier. We then go through the basic points of our game plan and highlight the opposition’s strengths and weaknesses while reiterating particular coverage of our morning walk-thru.

Next we turn our attention to the white board. Most of the information on the board is consistent with our basic defense with some areas specific to this particular opponent. Based upon our opposition, “Pick and Rolls” and the “Low Post” are areas that can change on a nightly basis. If we face a Steve Nash in pick and rolls or a Tim Duncan in the low post, we must be willing to “customize” our basic coverage or we could be in for a long night.
We may decide to trap all pick and rolls with Nash or double team Duncan as soon as he catches the ball. Generally, our coverage remain consistent unless particular players warrant special attention. We will have a series of plays on the board that illustrate the opponent’s basic offense. Once again, we talk briefly about each play and how to defend it.
There are statistical categories on the board that are addressed; for example, 3 point shooting capabilities and free throw accuracy. If a particular player shoots a remarkably low percentage from the free-throw line it is strongly noted. After any additional questions are answered and a few words of wisdom, the players move onto the court with approximately twenty minutes to warm up.

At some point before both coaching staffs go onto the floor, the official scorekeeper informs each locker room of the starters as designated by each team. Ninety percent of the time this is a predictable event. However, if there is a surprise in the line-up then our staff will confer and decide on any defensive match-up changes.

Once the game has started we rely on our detailed preparation. With the exception of a few instances, we have rehearsed in some fashion all defensive schemes, anticipated matchups, and posses back-up options. We are capable of making adjustments out of time-outs, at quarter breaks, or if necessary, on the “fly” because of our preparation.

At halftime the staff converses briefly while the players have an opportunity to take care of any personal needs, speak to the trainer, etc. The 14 minute break is brief, and therefore our coaches meeting and the address to the team must be as well. Based upon observations of the first half we will discuss any changes or adjustments with the team and then confer individually with players as necessary.

Immediately after the game, the coaches meet for a few minutes to discuss any quick post game thoughts and then assemble with the team for post-game comments. The following day at practice, the depth of our post-game analysis depends on the upcoming schedule. We may spend a few minutes or a few hours with the team analyzing our past performance. Yet one thing is certain, however long we dwell on yesterday’s game, preparation for the next game is looming. ..."

"... The Phoenix Suns' Steve Nash shines in running the break, but how do his teammates know where to go to get open to receive his passes? Orlando's Dwight Howard is a tremendous talent in the post, but why has his game improved and added new dimensions? And how is it that Utah's Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer run the screen and roll as smoothly as Jazz legends John Stockton and Karl Malone did years before?

Coaching. Yes, even in a league loaded with superior athletic talent, the teaching, tactical maneuvers, and strategies provided by NBA coaches are second to none. And as younger, sometimes less mature and less experienced players from all over the world have entered the league, those coaching skills are more diverse and better honed than ever before.

Now NBA Coaches Playbook takes you into the practice sessions and sideline huddles with detailed Xs and Os and more from the game's best at maximizing performance on the court. Let the likes of Phil Jackson, Mike D'Antoni, Avery Johnson, Stan Van Gundy, George Karl, Eddie Jordan, Mike Dunleavy, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and many other head and assistant coaches provide you with new insights to benefit your own team and individual players.

Complete with more than 150 detailed plays and drills straight from Coach Cremins’ personal playbook, it reveals strategies and offensive principles from more than two decades of successful coaching.
That's everything you need to know to play offensive basketball at its highest level.

When Bobby Cremins became head coach of Appalachian State University, he was one of the youngest professionals to ever lead an NCAA Division I basketball team. Going to Georgia Tech at 33, he was among the youngest ever in the history of the ACC.

Two decades later as Georgia Tech's all-time winningest coach, Cremins had compiled fourteen victorious seasons, six All-Americans, and two National Coach of the Year awards. How did he do it? The answers are here as Coach Cremins reveals the secrets of his powerful, high-pressure playbook for the first time ever.

In this action-packed guide for coaches and players, Cremins shares more than 150 super-charged plays and strategies guaranteed to make you rethink your offensive system, along with how he recruited many of the top point guards who played for him, and what he learned from each. • Implement a fast break that's right for you and your personnel,

• Develop an aggressive zone offense.

UNC-Charleston: Bobby Cremins Asks for Clemency ?

"... Bobby Cremins, the former Georgia Tech coach and now head man at the College of Charleston, has asked the University of North Carolina and the ACC to be relieved from his commitment to play the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill on Wednesday night.

“I don’t want to play ‘em,” said Cremins who led the Yellow Jackets to the Final Four in 1990 while earning the Naismith College Coach of the Year Award, “I didn’t want to play them to start with, and after Sunday night, I damn sure don’t want to play ‘em now. No freakin’ way.”

Coach Roy Williams said in his Monday ACC teleconference that he agreed to a home and home with Charleston out of respect for Cremins and his love for the low country of South Carolina.

“We own a home down there at Wild Dunes. There's no question that it's one of my favorites places to play golf, sit on the beach, and eat seafood, but I don't think I'll be doing any of those three when we come back next year to play,” Ol’ Roy said.

Charleston is a member of the Southern Conference and their hoops squad is off to a solid start posting a 10-2 record. The Cougars also lost their last game – to ranked conference foe Davidson 79-75. That experience will not help them when they face a Tar Heel team which no doubt suffered through some tough practices this week after losing to B.C. in the conference opener.

The Cougars do not have a football program and are best-known for thier men's basketball team. In hoops the Cougars won the NAIA national title in 1983 and have made four trips to the NCAA Tournament (1994, 1997, 1998 and 1999). Charleston also boasts the 2004, 2005, 2006, & 2007 SoCon Champion baseball team, 2004 SoCon Championship men's soccer team and the 2003 & 2005 SoCon Championship softball teams. From 2001 to 2007 the Cougars have won SoCon titles in women's volleyball, men's and women's swimming, diving, men's and women's cross country, women's track and field and women’s basketball. Just the same, on Wednesday night, they won’t be playing softball or soccer or baseball.

In addition they have excellent equestrian and sailing teams, not to mention student rugby clubs for both the men and the women. None of this means diddly squat when they face a very cranky Tar Heel squad tomorrow night.

Cremins became the basketball coach in 2006. The ACC coaching legend had coached Georgia Tech from 1981 to 2000. In addition to reaching the Final Four in 1990, Cremins’ Jackets won three ACC tournaments. Unfortunately, none of that means jack crap when Charleston plays a fired-up UNC team Wednesday.

Cremins is, in fact, so good that prior to his run in Atlanta he made Appalachian State, a football school, a Southern Conference basketball power. The Cremins led Mountaineers won the SoCon regular season or tournament championship in 1979, 1978 and 1981. However, none of that will translate into baskets or rebounds when the Cougars tangle with a recently jilted formerly number 1 ACC powerhouse on their home court.

“Look, I won 100 games at Appalachian State and everybody knows that’s a football school, and I took Georgia Tech, another football school, to the Final Four,” said Cremins, “but, this? This is ridiculous.”

ACC Commissioner John Swofford said, “Fish gotta swim, birds gotta eat. Nothin’ personal, it’s jut bidness. Play ball.” ..."
Bleacher Report

"... This action-packed guide features more than 150 plays and strategies by Bobby Cremins, one of college basketball’s most renowned coaches. Guaranteed to make you rethink how you run your offense, the book defines how to implement a fast break that’s right for your personnel, how to go from a missed shot to a basket; how to attack full- and half-court pressure and get high percentage shots; how to beat the clock with great last-second shots and all kinds of special situations. ..."
Booklist

"... I'm so happy I purchased this book. It really is the kind of book you could live by for running an offense for the entire year. I'd recommend this for high school or above. If you had a junior high or AAU team that practiced everyday you could certainly implement the knowledge from this book to your practices and game plans. ..."
Coach George Sylvester, W.Bridgewater, MA)

"... Really good read. This is a great book for coaches of all levels. It is one of the more practical offensive books I've encountered.

It doesn't focus on any one offence in particular, it simply offers a number of different offences that you can run depending on the personnel you have in your team. ..."

NBA Coaches Playbook:
Techniques, Tactics & Teaching Points

Mike Krzyzewski and Rick Pitino attest to the benefits college basketball coaches glean from the pro level.

Now college and high school coaches can get advice from top NBA coaches in the NBA Coaches Association’s upcoming NBA Coaches Playbook.
The first of its kind, the playbook offers a collection of proven methods and strategies from the NBA’s  elite coaches on maximizing player and team performance.

“Winning basketball was and still is a matter of fundamentals and details, but you also need a tough attitude in order to reach the top,” says Basketball Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson.

In NBA Coaches Playbook, 28 successful coaches offer more than 450 Xs-and-Os diagrams and expertise, including tips from Phil Jackson on the fast break, Tex Winter on the triangle offense, and Pete Carril and Eddie Jordan on the Princeton offense.

Each chapter offers technical teaching points, practice drills, tactical nuances, or game-management tools that provide a coaching edge. The book’s “special plays” section should be especially popular among coaches seeking the out-of-bounds and last-second plays that work when the game is on the line.
