Schedules for Women’s U17 World Championship published

With the groups for the inaugural U17 World Championship for Women drawn on 12th February, the exact tournament schedule has now been finalised.

In the 2009 U16 Continental Championships, the 12 participating countries were determined. Divided into two groups of six, the teams will play the five others in their respective groups during the group stage.

The first round will be played between 16th and 21st July, with group A games disputed at the Amphithéâtre in Rodez and group B games at the Palais des Sports in Toulouse.

The Championship openers see Japan taking on Russia in Rodez and China playing Argentina, with both games scheduled for 3:00pm CET. Later that day – also in group A – hosts France get their campaign underway with a tough game against pre-tournament favourites USA (5:30pm CET).

The following day old foes USA and Russia collide in a fixture that rarely disappoints (group A – 5:30pm), while Australia play China in what is expected to be a tightly contested game between two title hopefuls (group B – 5:30pm).

Day three of the competition, held on 18th July, serves up two repeats of last year’s U16 FIBA zone championship finals when USA come up against Canada (group A – 3:00pm CET) and Spain face off against Belgium (group B – 5:30pm).

Another game to keep an eye on is the coming together of two powerhouses in world basketball Spain and Argentina on 20th July (group B – 8:30pm CET).

On 21st July all 12 teams will play their fifth and final first round games, bringing the group stage to a close.

The four top placed teams from each group qualify for the quarter-finals, held on 23rd July, while the semi-finals will be played the following day.

On Sunday 25th July, the two winning semi-finalists will come head to head to determine the winner of the inaugural FIBA U17 World Championship for Women.

FIBA – This week in Basketball ~ Esta Semana en el Baloncesto

Huge week of action awaits basketball lovers

The week may already be a day old, but our preview of what to look out for should be well worth the wait.

For fans around the world there will be plenty to sink their teeth into with a massive few days of basketball ahead.

Tuesday 16/02/2010
How about an NBA game to get your week started. In our pick of Tuesday's games, Southwest Division leaders Dallas Mavericks, whose form has been shaky of late, travel to Oklahoma to take on the Thunder, who will be hoping to secure a 7th successive win.

Wednesday 17/02/2010
To Asia where on Wednesday the second leg of the five-game ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) playoff will oppose Philippine Patriots and Indonesians Satria Muda BritAma. All ABL games can be seen live on

The Jakartans will be looking to bounce back after defeat in the opening game against a Patriots side who have been in exceptional form since the end of the regular season.

Thursday 18/02/2010
Then things go a little crazy, with Spain's Copa Del Rey weekend getting started. This year’s edition is played in Bilbao’s Bizkaia Arena, with the first two quarter-finals played on Thursday.

Power Electronics Valencia take on Madrid Asefa Estudiantes, while Barcelona come up against Andalusia Cajasol.

European giants Barcelona have swept aside almost every team they have faced recently and will be keen on recapturing a trophy that has eluded them since 2003.

Italy’s Final Eight and France’s Semaine des As (both 18th-21st February) also get underway and promise plenty of excitement over the weekend.

In Australia, where the regular season ended last week, the first of the three game semi-final between table toppers Perth Wildcats and Queensland’s Gold Coast Blaze will also be played on Thursday. Watch this and all this year’s remaining NBL games live on

Friday 19/02/2010
As the weekend draws nearer still, the other NBL semi-final will get going with the first leg between Wollogong Hawks and Townsville Crocodiles.

Friday also sees the remaining Copa Del Rey semi-finals, in which home side Bizkaia Bilbao Basket take on ACB league champions Caja Laboral (formerly TAU Cerámica) and Real Madrid face DKV Joventut.

Saturday 20/02/2010
It’s a massive cup day on Saturday, with semi-final action from Spain, France and Italy, while in Russia, the return leg of the quarter-finals will also be played.

But surely the pick of the bunch is the Greek cup final, where fierce rivals Panathinaikos and Olympiakos come head to head for the third year running. Trailing in the league by just the one win and after defeats in 2008 and 2009, Olympiakos will be hoping it is third time lucky on Saturday.

Sunday 21/02/2010
The third leg of the ABL will be held on Sunday and should Wednesday’s game have gone the way of the Filipinos, it will be do or die for Satria Muda BritAma.

A week of outstanding basketball action will come to a close on Sunday, with the finals of the Copa Del Rey, the Semaine des As and the Italian Final Eight.

But if you have room for one more game, maybe you should turn your attention back to the NBA, where the top two teams in the Eastern Conference, Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic meet at the Amway Arena in Florida.

2010 will be a giant year for basketball and while many already have an eye on this summer’s World Championship, this coming week offers one of the most diverse and complete schedules for basketball fanatics.
