Basketball Traveling: Rule and Statistical Tracking
Caminar en Baloncesto: Regla & Registro Estadístico

• El Paso de Jab y Registro de Caminar
• The Jab Step and Traveling Tracking

( for English Translation= See Below )

The new traveling rules that is implemented during the current season’s EuroLeague will allow more moves to the players which means more fun stuff to watch.
Fans of all Euroleague Basketball competitions will have some interesting new rule changes and interpretations to track this season that are expected to make the game more to their liking.

First and foremost, both the EuroLeague and the EuroCup have adopted the new worldwide rule on traveling that was made effective by FIBA World on October 1. The new rule will give players who are dribbling or in motion when receiving the ball more freedom to maneuver, depending on their footwork.

Most notably, a player in motion who receives the ball while in contact with the floor will be allowed a further step when starting his dribble. At the same time, any player who receives the ball in the same way or is already dribbling and looks to shoot or pass will be allowed a so-called “gather step” to pick up the ball before his two steps without dribbling are counted. This will make many more spin moves legal than before and offer advantages to players on the move with the ball going to the basket.

What will not change, however, are the rules as applied to a static player. His obligation to release the ball before lifting his pivot foot when making a move from a standing start is unchanged.

Other lines of emphasis for game officials this season focus on non-basketball fouls and making them clearly unsportsmanlike by definition. Making no legitimate attempt to play the ball; excessive contact on the player or the ball; unnecessary contact in transition; and contact laterally or from behind on a breakaway dribbler are examples of fouls that will be considered unsportsmanlike.

What’s more, starting this season any combination of two unsportsmanlike or technical fouls, including one of each, results in a player’s disqualification from the game.

“The combination of more liberal rules on traveling and stricter definitions of unsportsmanlike conduct on the court should result in less restricted and more fluid play again this season,” Richard Stokes, Euroleague Basketball’s Director of Officiating, said. “Last season, when the rule on unsportsmanlike fouls was applied more consistently, we saw an uptick in transition points and fewer stoppages in play. This season’s changes should also result in more free-flowing basketball and clarity in the traveling rule, which now better reflects how the modern game is played.”

Last season’s changes coincided with an explosion of offense, with the most points scored per game in 15 seasons, plus the highest-ever averages in three-pointers made and assists.

When correctly executed, a jab step will not be called as a traveling violation and we have no turnover here.

A jab step is a small step towards the opposing player using the non-pivot foot. It depends on the defensive player's reaction. It is used before a jump shot or a drive.

eBA Statistical Tracking: Only if the pivot-foot is lifted instead of the other, to make the jab step, we should have a traveling situation and a turnover forced by the opponent.

Basketball Traveling: Rule and Statistical Tracking
Caminar en Baloncesto: Regla & Registro Estadístico

• Vídeo Jugada Legal & Doble Registro
• Legal Video Play & Double Register

( for English Translation= See Below )

Rule Fundamental=
The play as seen in the clip, shall be legal since the backboard is equipment located in the offensive half court of the Offensive Team, which a player of this team is entitled to use.

eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking=
For the statistical tracking of this play we have to ways: the traditional statistician will give  to the player a FGA, and OR and a FGM. On the second way, the game analyst may allow himself to register only the FGM in the Dunk category and ignore the first part of the play ("since the backboard is equipment located in the offensive half court") if he feels it a was "show-time play" and not a shooting attempt, and wants to register the "real" possessions number.

Comments=
The reason of the T at the end of the clip, is the player throwing the ball to the gallery after the conversion, and it is no referred to the FGM action, which, as said, is legal.

Basketball Traveling: Rule and Statistical Tracking
Caminar en Baloncesto: Regla & Registro Estadístico

• Video Question: Is it Traveling ?
• Pregunta con Vídeo: Es esto Caminar ?

( para Traducción al Español= Ver a Continuación )

If a player throws the ball off the backboard ( but not the rim ), runs several steps, and then catches the rebound in the air as in this clip and tips it back in or dunks it before landing, is that 'traveling' ?

What's the technical at the end of the clip, because the ball off the backboard ?

Whatever your answer, which is the statistical tracking ?

Basketball Traveling: Rule and Statistical Tracking • Caminar en Baloncesto: Regla & Registro Estadístico

Caminar: Regla & Registro Estadístico

( for English Translation: See Previous Message )
