New Age Stats

A while ago, we were reading around the net about the MIT NBA General Managers conference which is on the cutting edge of using math and statistical models for evaluating basketball talent along the lines of a famous movie with Brad Pitt as a new age genius talent evaluator for the Oakland baseball team which was based on a true story.

Though I feel there are limits to overly mathematical evaluations which can be compensated for by good management and coaching experience and instinct, I'd like to propose some new age stats that continue a philosophy that some avant garde coaches of the past like Dean Smith put to use in the 1970s and beyond.

Smith used a legion of grad assistants to chart things like ball deflections on defense and possessions gained by diving for loose balls etc. Anything that could more accurately depict a player's performance and efficiency, possession by possession, interested Smith and other coaches like him who "thought outside the box".

While current major stats like points and rebounds are sufficient for the general public, more precise and in-depth stats are necessary for GMs and intense basketball fans to get to the heart of things and this phenomenon has been largely accentuated by the info- thirsty internet generation and fantasy leagues.

Personally I am more interested in what goes on on the court, rather than in salary cap and luxury tax math management.

So here goes: let's create a stat for well-set screens (SO underrated!) that lead to an open man or a good scoring oppurtunity.

Another stat for the percentage of times a player uses a screen well, reading the defense to get open.

A stat for hockey assists in basketball for the pass before the assist and the intelligent swing pass which creates space on the weak side for a good shot.

How about a stat for non-controlled touches on the boards or during floor play that keep balls and possessions alive.

Phil Jackson is so successful because of his ability to run the triangle offense, a complicated but brilliant system which facilitates ball movement and spacing like few systems when executed successfully. Therefore another important stat could be penetrating passes which approach the ball to the basket, a principle very dear to Phil Jackson and the Triangle Offense.

How about keeping the shooting percentage of the player you are directly defending. Even with switching on screens, this would be easy to decypher with some long hours in the video room.

One of my favorite ideas would be team and individual "good shots taken" percentage. Of course you still have to MAKE the shots but taking GOOD shots is half the work!

You could make exceptions for players obliged to force shots at the end of the 24-second clock when teammates pass them the poisoned-gift ball as the clock runs down.

Taking into account these new stats would produce glorious numbers for "passing game" teams like San Antonio which have the best teamwork and basketball IQ or for hyper-active individual players like Joakim Noah who participates in ALL aspects of the game after staying in college and really learning the GAME!

If these particular stats appeal to me personally (and probably already to some modern thinking coaches and GMs), it's because as a pro I was a slow long range shooter who needed screens and ball movement to get shots. It was like "hey fellas, I need your screens to survive so I am going to set for you the best screens you ever saw"!

In eight different seasons I averaged over 25 points a game at different levels so this "golden rule" for setting and receiving good screens (or penetrating passes) served me well!

A nivel de Equipo:  lanzamiento ( como el factor más valioso para analizar en relación con el mejoramiento de la precisión en el lanzamiento ), balones perdidos, rebotes y tiros libres intentados.

A nivel Individual: lanzamiento ( como las estadística más importantes en el nivel pre-profesional ), balones perdidos, reboteo, lanzamiento de tiros libres; faltas personales, forzar pérdidas de balón del oponente; reboteo y lanzamiento del oponente en el lado defensivo.

A nivel Individual del Jugador, será muy importante analizar cuales son los jugadores más valiosos en el ataque: lo cual significa aquellos jugadores que pueden producir eficientemente con un grado alto de uso de las posesiones  y cuales jugadores necesitan ser más selectivos con su lanzamiento a efectos de ser eficientes.

En el nivel de la Escuela Secundaria, es ampliamente aplicado el Tc% Efvo = ( Total Lanzamientos de Campo + 0.5 * Lanzamientos 3 Puntos ) / Total lanzamientos de Campo.

At the player level: shooting ( as the most important individual statistic at the pro level ), turnovers, rebounding, FT shooting on offense; fouls, forcing turnovers; rebounding and opponent shooting on the defensive end.

At the player level, it will be important to analyze which are the most valuable offensive players: that's means the players that can produce in an efficient manner with higher usage rates  and which players need to be more characterized by careful choice with their shot in order to be effective.

At the High School level, the effective or Adj FG% = ( Total FG + 0.5 * 3ptFG ) / Total FGA is currently applied
