EuroBasket & European Basketball Tournaments Analysis • Análisis Torneos Europeos de Baloncesto y Eurobasket

Weekend eBA Basketball Magazine:

Jure Zdovc just what Slovenia needed !

Jeff Taylor's Eurovision
Slovenia are sort of a mystery when it comes to international basketball.

A small country that’s been on the hoops map for just a couple of decades, it has produced excellent players who have competed in the NBA or at the highest level in Europe.
The national team, though, has yet to reach the podium of a major tournament.

Some of the best known Slovenians to make it across the Atlantic are Bostjan Nachbar, Beno Udrih, Rasho Nesterovic, Sasha Vujacic and current Phoenix Suns point guard Goran Dragic.
Matjaz Smodis, Jaka Lakovic and Erazem Lorbek have all done extremely well at the highest level in Europe.

There is a huge basketball tradition in Slovenia.

In the old days, there were marvelous players from the country who suited up for Yugoslavia, including Ivo Daneu, the most valuable player of the 1967 FIBA World Championship in Montevideo.

"Ivo Daneu mastered the hook shot and used this unstoppable weapon to regularly score even from as far as the 6-7 meter range," reads the 1.80m guard's FIBA Hall of Fame bio.

Daneu had a long, distinguished career, one that saw him help Yugoslavia captured gold in Ljubljana at the 1970 FIBA World Championship.

Twenty years later and there was another terrific Slovenian in the Yugoslavian backcourt.

Jure Zdovc was a key man as Yugoslavia won the 1989 European title and the 1990 FIBA World Championship.

He was also in the 1991 Yugoslavian team that was on the road to gold at the EuroBasket in Rome when politics ended his run with the team.

While the tournament was going on, Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia.

The Slovenia Minister of Sport sent a fax to Zdovc at his hotel in Rome informing him that if he played in the Semi-Final, he’d be considered a traitor.

Zdovc, who received a lot of support from his Serbian and Croatia teammates at the time, spent the rest of the tournament off the court and in the hotel.

That wasn't the end of Zdovc in international basketball because he later competed for Slovenia’s national team.

Zdovc has a special place in the hearts of Slovenians.

Everyone remembers that as a difficult time for Zdovc and have a lot of respect for him as a person and a player.

It would be difficult to find anyone who doesn't admire what Zdovc was able to accomplish in his short time with the national team as coach, too.

Zdovc replaced Ales Pipan at the helm in 2009 and coached Slovenia at that year’s EuroBasket in Poland to a fourth-place finish.

He had a magic touch.

Despite injuries to key players Smodis and Dragic, Zdovc led Slovenia to important wins.

They ended up as one of the unluckiest teams in EuroBasket history.

Boštjan 'Boki' Nachbar (born July 3, 1980) is a Slovenian professional basketball player for FC Barcelona of the Liga ACB. Nachbar has been a member of the Slovenian national basketball team. He has played at two FIBA European Championships, the 2003 FIBA European Championship and the 2005 FIBA European Championship. During the 2005 FIBA European Championship, he averaged 11 points and 5 rebounds per game. He was also a member of Slovenia's national team that played at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan. He was a member of Slovenia's national team that played at the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.. Serbia won against them after overtime in the Semi-Finals and Greece then beat them by a single point in the Bronze Medal Game.

Zdovc's decision not to continue at the helm after EuroBasket 2009 and to instead concentrate on his club duties with his team at the time, Union Olimpija, was a huge disappointment for neutrals like me because Zdovc had been the best coach in Poland.

It was sad to see him go.

This week, Slovenia announced the reins were back in the hands of Zdovc.

He has replaced Bozidar Maljkovic, who coached the national team the past three summers.

Slovenia hosted last year's EuroBasket and played in some thrilling games in Celje and Ljubljana, but finished fifth.

There was a lot of pride in the team, one that didn't have the services of Lorbek, but there was also an empty feeling.

Slovenia felt like they’d at long last reach the podium, but fell to eventual champions France in the Quarter-Finals.

At least by winning their Classification Round games, Slovenia were able to finish high enough to qualify for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Zdovc is upbeat.

He says there is a lot of talent in the fold, much more than he had anticipated there would be when he stepped down as coach in 2009.

"I said that four years ago I did not believe that we will again get a generation that can play at such a high level,” Zdovc said, "but now I think otherwise.

"I think it (the team) is capable of continuing the good games and results."

There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

Dragic is moving from strength to strength in the NBA, averaging 19.5 points and 6.0 assists per game for the Phoenix Suns.

His younger brother, Zoran Dragic, has built on his impressive EuroBasket by averaging more than 13 points per game for Unicaja Malaga, helping them reach the Top 16 of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague.

Lorbek is returning to full fitness and has, in his last couple of Euroleague outings with Barcelona, averaged 22 minutes per game.

His brother, swingman Domen Lorbek, and center Mirza Begic are only 28 and big man Gasper Vidmar is 26.

There are outstanding youngsters who are already big contributors to the national team like Jaka Blazic and Edo Muric.

There are plenty of good players, and an excellent coach.

The mood should be very good now in Slovenia.

Jeff Taylor from FIBA

EuroBasket & European Basketball Tournaments Analysis • Análisis Torneos Europeos de Baloncesto y Eurobasket

Weekend eBA Basketball Magazine:

Hezonja, Jaiteh, Sipahi, Sabonis
top youngsters in Euroleague

David Hein's Eye on the Future
The Turkish Airlines Euroleague tips off in earnest tonight and if you're a fan of young talent, there are definitely more than a fair share of up-and-coming stars to keep an eye on over the course of the season.

Before we get going, let's define up-and-coming. Let's take out 20-year-olds (or players born in 1993 or later).

That would mean 1992-born guys like Bogdan Bogdanovic, Leo Westerman
and Davis Bertrans from Partizan and Milan captain Alessandro Gentile as well as 1993-born studs such as Alex Abrines from Barcelona (yeah, he’s still only 20), while the pair of Luka Mitrovic and Aleksandar Cvetkovic from Red Star are too 'old'.

Obviously, the most-talked about name on the list is Barcelona's Mario Hezonja. The 18-year-old did not play for Croatia at all this summer - junior ranks or senior level - and worked hard in the pre-season in getting more comfortable in coach Xavi Pascual's system. And the work has paid off as Hezonja has already worked himself into the rotation with the Spanish giants - though of course he won't get big minutes in the stacked Barcelona team.

Mouhammadou Jaiteh, meanwhile, will likely be seeing a lot of playing time for Euroleague debutants JSF Nanterre. The 18-year-old French center made the jump to top flight basketball with the Pro A champions from last season after a strong 2012-13 campaign in the Pro B second division.

Jaiteh played a leading role for France at the 2013 U20 European Championship and turned down a chance to go to college in the United States to play professionally in France. In Nanterre's first three Pro A games this season, Jaiteh has averaged 9.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.0 steals in about 21 minutes of action. Prepare to see plenty of him in the Euroleague.

If the numbers in the Turkish TBL league are any indication, then maybe some decent things could be expected from Fenerbahce's 1995-born duo of Kenan Sipahi and James Birsen. The 18-year-old talents led Turkey to the gold medal at the 2013 U18 European Championship and the U18 MVP Sipahi even got a brief invite to the senior national team training camp before EuroBasket 2013. Both youngsters got some good burn in Fenerbahce's convincing win in their season-opener against Mersin.

Please, Refresh this Page Once to Load all the Previews, Photographs or the Videos !

Sipahi collected eight points and six assists in 19 minutes of a 25-point blowout win while Birsen had three points and two rebounds in 16 minutes.

LKF President Arvydas Sabonis with his son Domantas at this year's U16 European Championship.  Domantas Sabonis. Yes, that's the 17-year-old son of Lithuanian legend Arvydas Sabonis. Domantas was actually born in 1996 in the United States during his father's time with the Portland Trail Blazers. The younger Sabonis was the youngest player to debut in the Liga Endesa for Unicaja in September 2012 as a 16-year-old. In this Picture by Robertas Dackus from FIBA EUROPE  presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis
Photograph: Robertas Dackus from FIBA EUROPE

Looking at Unicaja Malaga's roster, one name definitely stands out - Domantas Sabonis.

He averaged 14 points and 11.4 rebounds for Lithuania at the 2013 U18 European Championship as the team's only under-class player and appears to be in the plans of Unicaja coach Joan Plaza.

Sabonis scored six points to go along with three rebounds and one block in 15 minutes against Estudiantes in Malaga's season opener.

Another Lithuanian youngster who might see some playing time is 1994-born Tomas Dimsa with Zalgiris Kaunas. The Kaunas native played at the 2013 Nike Hoop Summit and followed that with a leading role in Lithuania's bronze medal-winning showing at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship.

Zalgiris pulling out of the VTB League might limit somewhat Dimsa's chances of playing more but look for Kaunas coach Ilias Zouros to give the youngster some minutes as the club is clearly looking to build something for the future with a roster full of young players.

Partizan have an even younger roster with eight players born in 1991 or later. The aforementioned Westermann is just 21 years old but already is considered a veteran leader on this team. The French point guard is also serving as a great mentor to 19-year-old compatriot Boris Dallo. The Nantes native moved to Partizan this past summer and has already averaged nearly 13 minutes in Belgrade's first three games this season - with averages of 2.0 points, 2.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds. Look for Dallo to really excel as he plays top level competition with similar-aged players while also getting tutelage from a true star in the making in Westermann.

Here are a couple of other names to keep an eye on a bit this season but definitely down the road: Ilimane Diop of Laboral Kuxta Vitoria (1993-born, Spain); Dimitrios Agravanis of Olympiacos (1994-born, Greece) and Cedi Osman of Anadolu Efes Istanbul (1995-born, Turkey).
