Sherri Coale delivers an amazing defensive DVD that will expose you and your players to a wide variety of defensive systems. You will gain a basic understanding of defensive systems and you're sure to find one that will fit your team's defensive strengths.

Man-to-Man Defense

Build your man-to-man defensive principles using a variety of live ball reaction drills and a mirror drill that will train your players to guard a basic cutter, the jab step, a change of direction move, or a dead ball situation. Jumping to the ball, defensive close-out technique, ball screen defense and a basic defensive stance are all explained and drilled.

Use Coale's 1-on-0 closeouts and full court closeouts to make sure your players have the proper hand up to contest a shot and are able and ready to slide in front of any player who puts the ball on the floor.

Learn the basic ball-you-man relationship your players must have to be successful whether they are 1, 2, or 3 passes away from the ball. Teach your players how to defend a variety of different cuts and dribble penetrations from every angle on the floor using a 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 shell drill. This all builds up to a 5-on-5 shell drill that incorporates all of the man defense skills.

Zone, Trapping, and Junk Defense

Coale demonstrates how to play a 2-3 zone, 3-2 zone, and a 1-3-1 trapping zone in the half court setting - and reminds coaches how important it is to use man principles when playing a zone.

Need to turn up the pressure? Coale shows you how to run a full court zone trap. Whether it's a diamond-and-1 or 2-2-1 press, you can force your opponents to catch the ball in dangerous territory and lock them down with two defenders. She also shows you how to use your interceptors and safety to create uncertainty for the trapped ball handler.

Coale also provides an overview of the triangle-and-2 or box-and-1 defense to help you shut down that offensive star that is killing you.

Post Defense

In order to build a successful defense, you have to have a strong post presence. Coach Coale outlines how to effectively build a great post defender and how to trap in the post.

This DVD highlights the key principles, alignments and techniques you need to create lock-down defense!

Sherri Coale provides viewers with a complete tutorial on all things offense. Whether you are looking for a continuity man offense, set plays, or a zone offense, you will find something you can implement immediately into your offensive system to make you team successful.

Man-to-Man Offense

Coach Coale provides a basic outline to a man-to-man continuity system that is easy to install - and can be the foundation for building a motion system. She demonstrates and outlines her 5-Game Motion Offense which is ideal for a team whose players are the same size and skill level. The screen away motion creates good movement with two players coming to the ball off of a screen.

She also outlines and demonstrates a 4-Game Motion Offense. This offense allows you to keep a post player near the basket and incorporates cuts and screens while spreading the floor to create dribble penetration.

In both offenses, Coale shows how to use the cuts and skills taught in the offensive fundamental DVD and how to incorporate them into a continuity offense.

Zone Offense

Learn how to use your post players to seal in and seal out in order to create advantages in the post against the middle man of a 2-3 zone. Coale demonstrates how players can attack the gaps by asking themselves "who is guarding me" and "where did they come from." With this mentality, your players will be able to attack a zone defense from any angle on the floor including the most obvious spot: the high post.

Just as Coach Coale demonstrated a set play to counter man defense, she also demonstrates several easy to teach sets against a zone. The sets contain multiple scoring looks that become available when the defense takes away the primary look.

Sideline and Baseline Inbounds

Instead of looking to "just get the ball in," Coach Coale outlines several scoring options against zone and man defense from a baseline out of bounds or sideline out of bounds set. In each set, she walks you through every scoring option and how to tweak these options to keep you opponents on their toes.

Transition

Coale outlines what an offensive player needs to do every time down the floor on a fast break: Get fouled, move the ball, and make a decision. She details a basic secondary break that your players can use to score from the inside or the outside against any defense, how to teach the secondary break and how to make it flow easily into your continuity offense.

Press Breakers

Coach Coale uses her final segment to build a full court press break that will quickly and efficiently break either a man or a zone defense. She teaches her players to keep it simple and then drills the idea in a 2-on-2 safe and secure drill that teaches her players to be strong with the ball. She finishes with two last-second plays that are able to get your best players the shot they need to win the game.

Coach Coale does a great job of providing the fundamentals to team offense. Using the offenses and plays presented on this DVD, you can create a winning offensive system for your team!

One of the most important parts of the game of basketball is also one of the hardest to master. Now you have help!

In this video Sherri Coale shows you how to build - or become - a great shooter. Coach Coale demonstrates and guides you through a practical shooting progression that any player can use to build a successful jump shot. You'll get a ton of individual and partner drills for building a successful shot.

Coale's progression starts with stationary drills - with and without a ball - to help players focus on the individual components of the shot.

As the progression continues, players start shooting at the basket to further develop their shooting form and their confidence. Coale demonstrates a drill called Killers to check players' form and to build muscle memory through continuous repetition.

After mastering shooting form, footwork is added to the progression. Your players will learn how to use their feet to get square to the rim on the hop and to pivot into their shot.

Then Coale adds shooting off the dribble. She teaches her players to use the dribble as a pass to yourself and how to use the last dribble to get into the cock and lock position to shoot, using their strong or weak hand.

The final step in the progression takes place at free throw line. Players use everything they've learned about shooting to perfect their free throws. Coale demonstrates the process of free throw shooting in two phases: setting your feet and having routine and rhythm in your shot.

All of the drills in this DVD are demonstrated with a group of players, so you can see how to use the progression in a practice setting.

Sherri Coale is a master teacher with a blueprint for shooting success!

Sherri Coale went from a high school coach to a major DI program by being a "fundamentals" coach. In this DVD from Championship Productions and the AAU, Coach Coale teaches fundamental skills in four key areas. These skills will make your players effective in any offense.

Cutting

Create gaps in the defense that can be attacked for a score. Learn basket cutting, V-cuts, L-cuts, and back cuts and how they can be executed to free your players from a defender. Using 2-on-0, 3-on-0 and 4-on-0 drills, Coale shows how these cuts become a cornerstone for a great player and how you can take advantage of any defense.

Screening

Screens can provide several scoring opportunities from one basic action depending on how the defense plays you. Coale teaches how to set a proper screen that will allow your shooters and cutters to get open anywhere on the court. She also demonstrates the responsibilities for both the screener and receiver of the screen. Your players will greatly benefit from Coach Coale's 2-on-0 series that teaches down screens, flare screens, pin screens and back screens.

Feeding the Post

Attack the interior of the defense while providing scoring options for your perimeter players. Coale demonstrates how to post up, how to execute a post feed from the perimeter and how to cut or relocate for an open shot. You will learn the turn-and-face move for post players and how your post can "muscle on the top."

Spacing

With poor spacing, your players become easy to guard. Coale outlines several ways a player can move when a teammate is driving to the basket. This is an essential skill for any motion offense. Players need to be able to cut and relocate without the ball in order to create better scoring options. Coale does a fantastic job demonstrating how to move off of a chase and space, crack, and a drift drive by using a 4-on-0 driving drill where players are driving from the wing, baseline, or middle of the floor.

With the emphasis on building better players, your team's success will also improve.

Basketball is a team game, but your players need individual skills to perform their best - and to help your team succeed.

University of Oklahoma Women's Basketball Coach Sherri Coale provides a smorgasbord of 20+ individual skill developmental drills that stress the importance of grooming fundamental skills prior to players entering a team-based environment.

Coach Coale teaches you the basic skills any post player will need to be successful at any level of play. She stresses footwork and the need to do the work early in the possession to establish an advantageous post position. These drills aim at developing hand-eye coordination (in order to cleanly receive a post entry pass), utilization of the power dribble to create space, body positioning to prevent blocked shots and to seal off a defender, and finishing around the rim (as well as in transition).

Coach Coale describes in detail the most important part of post play, establishing your position. More post touches equals more points. In order to do this, she shows you how to effectively teach your players about catching the basketball - especially while taking contact - with her hands package. This package teaches post players how to properly catch the ball and put it into a "vice" position at the chin in order to execute any move. Coale uses the Mikan Drill to teach her players how to finish around the rim once they catch the basketball. In her Love Series, Coach Coale diagrams how post players are can effectively execute a catch, pivot, and square to the rim maneuver.

You will be able to implement any number of shooting drills for your post players right away. Coale demonstrates their V-Cut series in the post which teaches her players to catch at a fast pace, while getting a lot of reps in game spots at game speed.

"... I own several DVDs from numerous coaches, and I think Sherri Coale may be the best of any of them in articulating how to teach the game of basketball.
Her saying of "It's not the drill. It's what you emphasize in the drill," has guided my coaching since I first came across one of her DVDs.
Of this set, I have only watched the      Building a Championship Program program DVD thus far, and it has been EXTREMELY valuable.
I highly recommend it to any coach who is, or would like to become, a head coach. The best part of watching Coale at work is that I have always walked away with a concept that I can immediately implement as an assistant with my high school team. Her drills are simple, but by emphasizing important pieces of perfection, she creates players who are extremely solid fundamentally. ..."
Coach Duffett

"... Coach Coale never disappoints! She's actually the best there is in cumminicating and sharing her vast wealth of information. A must have for any Coach / program !
Coale doesn't dissappoint because she goes through all the proper mechanics of shooting from your feet position on up. She's a great teacher and this a must for anyone who wants to show youths the proper shooting mechanics before they start any bad habits...."
Anonymous

"... I've seen these drills used at every level of play from youth through the pros. However, it's not just about which drills she uses. It's how she explains them to her players, the points of emphasis, the execution of the drills, and how she gets the players to work so hard in the drills and improve. These drills will also help you in organizing an effective and competitive practice. Thanks again for taking the time to post your thoughts. ..."

All Access Oklahoma Women's Basketball Practice

Sherri Coale guided the Sooners to their second straight national semi-finals appearance in 2010. The foundation of her success is based on skill development and communication.
In this all access DVD presentation, Coach Coale gives you a court-side seat to the first five practices of the 2010-11 season.
Using the whole-part-whole method of teaching, you will see Coale and her staff giving the players the repetitions to effectively execute her offensive and defensive system.

Pre-Practice and Film Session
Watch Coale interact with her team as they go through three film sessions breaking down the good and the bad from the previous practice. After the film sessions, Coale takes her players through drills to improve fundamentals and serve as a warm-up for practice.

Offensive System
Coale's teams are legendary for their half-court motion offense. You will see the fundamental drills she uses to build the motion offense. These drills include motion shots (2-on-0, 3-on-0, 4-on-0) with specific action that includes penetrate and pitch, slips and cutting & spacing; 3-on-3 screening that includes pins, flare screens and back screens; 2-on-2 ball screens; and offensive rebounding. She also incorporates several multi-faceted shooting drills into her practices that simulate game-like shots.

Defensive System
Coale's teams play a tough, fundamentally sound man-to-man defense. In these practices, you get to see the drills used to teach individual and team man-to-man defense skills. They cover their transition defense rules and responsibilities, 1-on-0 and 1-on-1 closeouts, and build to 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 shell, as well as the Cameron Drill which is a multi-part drill incorporating closeouts and jumping to the ball.

Rebounding and Transition
A staple in Coale's practice routine are rebounding and transition offense fundamentals. Learn the techniques the Sooners use so effectively gain position under the rim to control any offensive or defensive rebound. The transition drills get the players to focus on pushing the ball up the floor every time. In addition, She also shows three of her early offense actions off the dribble-Deep, Drag, and Up.

Oklahoma Coaches Clinic
As an added bonus, you will see the 2010 Oklahoma Coaches Clinic. This clinic session features Oklahoma Strength and Conditioning Coach Tim Overman sharing activation drills to improve posture and stretching as well as his thoughts concerning ACL injuries and improving a players jumping ability.

Assistant Coach Jan Ross shares some of the post and guard drills they use in their fall and spring individual workouts. For post players, she shares teaching points and drills that include toss back outlets, one hand catches, power slams, fast finishes, back-ups, diagonals to bury, and offensive rebounding techniques. For the guards, she shows a 7-spot shooting drill, pick-ups, rip through series using a toss back, 2-ball pass and shoot, and a 3-cone touch drill.

Coach Coale shares lead up drills for teaching the primary break and two defensive drills. She finishes by taking your through their sideline in-bounds play, which can be used versus a man or a zone defense. Using this set, the players have a variety of actions and options to run based on how they read the defense.

This is an exhaustive library of basketball instruction!

"... Another excellent All Access production - Coach Coale does a great job of teaching and motivating. I really like the addition of film room scenes and Coach Coale's comments summarizing her practice at the end of each session - really good.

Two complaints though:
1) At times, the drills are filmed from bad angles - often can't see how the drill is setup;
2) I know her motion offense may be perimeter oriented but the post is still a pretty important part of the offense and very little attention is paid to the post drills - can see them occasionally but I think it would have been helpful to spend a little more time showing the post drills - they are good but they get very little camera time.

Was waiting for this purchase & did not disappoint - Really enjoyed this DVD.

Well put together & includes a copy of practice plan as Bonus feature. Also enjoyed the "Film Session" portions of reviewing practice and the overview before each DVD by Coach Coale.
Well done !.

Sherri Coale, University of Oklahoma Head Women's Basketball Coach

The AAU Coaching Girls Basketball Series ~ 7 DVDs by Sherri Coale
Sherri Kay Coale (born January 19, 1965) is the current head coach of the University of Oklahoma Sooners women's basketball team.

Personal
Coale grew up in Healdton, Oklahoma and married Dane Scott Coale (born 1964) on June 20, 1987. The couple has two children, son Colton (born 1992) and daughter, Chandler (born 1996). Coale has one brother, Jack. Their parents are Beverly Stash and Joe Buben.

Sherri completed her undergraduate studies at Oklahoma Christian College in Oklahoma City, where she graduated summa cum laude in 1987. There she played on the school's Lady Eagles basketball team as a guard.

Coaching career
Sherri Coale accepted her current position in 1996. She went directly from a high school squad (having coached the previous 6 years at the local Norman High School) to an NCAA Division I team. She took over a team in turmoil at Oklahoma and brought it into the national spotlight in 2002 when her team went to the National Championship game.

In 2005–2006 Coale's Sooners went 16–0 in Big 12 play and became the second Big 12 basketball team, men's or women's, to go undefeated in conference play. The University of Kansas men's basketball team went undefeated in Big 12 play in the 2001–2002 season. In 2008 the Sooners finished tied with two other teams for 3rd in the Big 12 Conference and were knocked out by Missouri in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament.

Sherri Coale about her Coaching Philosophy

"... I fell in love with basketball as a fifth-grader and could not imagine it not being a part of my life as an adult. I’m a very goal-oriented person and yet being a Division I coach was never a goal of mine.

I was extremely happy coaching basketball at Norman High School and probably would not have left that position to coach collegiately had the opportunity here at Oklahoma not presented itself.

I was enamored with everything that college basketball was except for the nomadic lifestyle. The position at the University of Oklahoma gave me all the attractive parts without the personal stretch of moving my family incessantly across the country. It was just a magical opportunity — the right place at the right time. ..."

"... I suppose the most succinct answer I could provide would be encompassed by our team’s purpose statement: “Our aim is to produce people literate about the full array of human achievement so that they might know what it means to do anything well. ...”

The AAU Coaching Girls Basketball Series ~ 7 DVDs by Sherri Coale

"... Changing perception was the toughest hurdle. Perception of the Oklahoma women’s basketball program was poor. We had to change the way people viewed our players and our product. And we had to do that the only way it can be done — one sincere act at a time performed over and over and over again. ..."

"... What advice do I have for young women who are involved in sports ? Be competitive. Set goals and strive to reach your potential.

Know that within team sports lie so many opportunities to grow and stretch yourself in ways that will make you a better spouse, a better parent, a better professional one day.

Compete with the physical and mental toughness of an athlete on the playing field, but never forget that when you step off the field, you are a female.

Be proud of that. Understand the unique strength that enables you to be exquisite in both arenas. ..."
