"... Being a player really helped me coach !
I think being a player and being one who’s not too far removed from being a Division I athlete, I can understand what they’re going through really well.

I think a lot of us when we leave college, we all of a sudden believe that we never took a day off in practice or we started all of our papers three weeks in advance – and that’s not necessarily the case.

So I think being as young as I am can allow me to relate to some of the things that they’re going through and I have a real pulse on exactly what they’re doing on a day-to-day basis. ..."
Andy Toole

• Break down drills and habits used to teach and master
   the rescreen offense
• Learn ways to incorporate players making quick, good decisions
   in transition and on offense
• Learn how to utilize the whole floor and break out drills to help teach
your players how to defend different screening actions
• See drills and techniques to make your practices competitive
   every dayto challenge your players
• Learn an offensive line series that gives you scoring options out
   of a 1-4 high set

with Andy Toole,
Robert Morris University Head Coach

Head Coach Andy Toole welcomes you to three days of intense, hardworking, no non-sense practices. Coach Toole gives you the inside look at how he develops his team on the offensive and defensive end.

With each practice Toole poses a new challenge to his players and he pushes them to meet that challenge and give a little more each day. Coach Toole demonstrates his use of statistical analysis and competitive spirit with each drill they incorporate in practice. You will love his intense nature and practice build-up that includes game-like intensity and structure.

Please, Refresh the Page if You Can't watch the Preview and the Videos !

Practice 1:

• Learn how to screen and re-screen to keep the defense from cheating on plays
• See defensive breakdown drills to develop technique for multiple positions
• Establish a culture of closing out using different breakdown drills
• See the "Daily Dozen," a lay up drill that works on footwork and finishing
   around the basketball

Coach Toole opens up his first practice by demonstrating how they build up their defensive philosophy. He provides you with various drills that challenges his defense to make offensive players uncomfortable. Coach breaks out into split squads and takes full advantage of his practice time to incorporate as many reps possible in each drill.

On the offensive end, he uses station drills and his daily dozen drills to help improve dribble penetration moves within their offensive system. With each drive, Coach Toole teaches his players how to execute each cut and where the open man will be for a kick out. On both ends of the floor, he instills a good, quick decision making process and emphasizes that you must be able to think quickly to be successful at the collegiate level.

Practice 2:

• Utilize disadvantage elements in your shell drills from different angles
• Learn transition drills to target specific actions in fast break basketball
• Use stations to teach defensive concepts such as handling UCLA cuts,
   back screens, and cross screens
• Learn set plays from RMU's "Line" series

This practice is packed with drills that combine working on fundamental skills, improving conditioning, and automating several options of the 2-man-game. Coach Toole spends most of the time teaching offensive movement, sets, and actions in order for his players to be game ready. He incorporates more 5-on-0 and 5-on-5 competitive drills.

During practice, each drill has a certain point value and he charts which team wins every day in order to make his players practice with a competitive edge just as they would in a game situation. You will get a chance to see how they teach new set plays and how they flow into their main re-screen offensive motion.

Coach will demonstrate their line series in a 5-on-0 setting, then have his players turn right around and get three possessions running each set. He wants them to understand how to beat a pressure defense by moving the basketball, cutting hard through the middle of the lane, and getting the ball into the post off of their re-screen action. You will see a great progressive build up on the offensive end during their second day of practice.

Practice 3:

• Defensive stations working on different aspects of how to play different
   offensive situations
• See how to use a controlled 5-on-5 scrimmage to work on offense
• Teach post players to carve out space on perimeter drives and always
ask for the ball `showing their numbers'

Coach Toole puts his players through an intense workout to see who will step up to meet their challenges and expectations. Practice 3 is again packed with great drills for both offense and defense. Everything Coach Toole does is aimed at challenging his players to work at the highest level, as well as to automate offensive options and defensive rotations.

Almost every defensive drill of the 2-hour practice incorporates the element of disadvantage. On every rebound, closeout, box out, or defensive transition, the defense is under pressure to react quickly and correctly. On offense, the prevailing theme is "penetrate and kick-out". Every possession coach wants his players to attack the defense, find open teammates, and make strong passes.

Today's stations focus on the defensive end, as the players work on the details of guarding hand-offs, weak side back screens, and stagger screens. Coach Toole revisits 4-on-4 shell drill, reaction shell drill, re-screening offense, and also teaches two more options of his 1-4 "Line" set.

Coach Toole does an excellent job teaching his players how to create a mentality of attacking their opponents on the offensive and defensive end. He works hard to get his players to play with great energy and always compete in practice so that they compete at a high level during their games.

About the Author: Andy Toole
All Access RMU Basketball Practice 3-Pack DVD with Andy Toole
Andrew Toole (born September 11, 1980 in Staten Island, New York) is an American basketball head coach. He has served as the head coach at Robert Morris University since May 11, 2010 and is currently the youngest head coach in Division I basketball at 30 years old. Toole had served as an assistant coach at Lafayette College and Robert Morris prior to accepting his first head coaching position. As a player, Toole played at Elon University before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania.

Playing career

While at Penn, Toole helped guide the Quakers to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2002 and 2003. He served as co-captain for the 2002-03 Quaker team that finished the regular season 22-6. Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, he averaged 12.3 points per game, while also contributing 3.0 assists and rebounds per game.

Coaching career

Following his graduation from the University of Penn, Toole spent two years with the Hoop Group, a major AAU high school exposure camp, in Neptune City, New Jersey. He then took up his first assistant coaching job at Lafayette College in 2006.

Robert Morris

After only one season at Lafayette, Toole moved west and accepted an assistant coaching job with Robert Morris University under now-Rutgers University head coach Mike Rice Jr.. Toole helped guide the Colonials to two straight NCAA Tournament berths in 2009 and 2010, where they were the 15th seed each time. When Rice left for Rutgers following the 2009-10 season, Robert Morris Director of Athletics Craig Coleman named Toole the 8th head coach in the basketball program's 34 years of existence on May 11, 2010.

"I'm unbelievably excited to be the head coach at Robert Morris University," Toole said during his press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center. "I take that honor very seriously, and I'm going to work incredibly hard and tirelessly to prove those people right while continuing to build on the success that we've had over the last three years." With his appointment, Toole became the youngest head coach in men's Division I basketball, and the fifth head coach with ties to the Hoop Group, following Rice (Rutgers), Greg Vetrone (Fairleigh Dickinson), Chuck Martin (Marist), and Jesse Agel (Brown).

Toole earned his first head coaching victory on November 13, 2010 against St. Peter's College, a 55-30 triumph at the Sewall Center. The win also set a new school record for points allowed in a game, besting the previous mark of 34 points allowed.

Andy Toole about Basketbal...

"...  From a difficult loss you need to learn that it's worth it to work as hard as we work, and to buy in to what the coaches are telling them to do. Eventually, all the hard work will pay off and you'll have a chance to go realize your dreams. ..."

"... Going through tough situations can help down the road and you hope it helps a lot. You hope that times when you're uncomfortable and face adversity and been in situations—whether it's crowd noise, officiating, tough bounces, whatever it may be—so that when you get in those situations and its of the utmost importance, it's not abnormal, it's normal. ..."

"... I don't think about the future much at all. I think about how to make our team the best that it can be every day – are we maximizing our time on the floor, time in the video room, time in the weight room, to make sure that our players can be successful. That's my most important thing. If you're not worried about doing the job you currently have for as long as someone will let you do it, then you're not going to be very successful at it. ..."

"... A few years ago, we were so upset when we lost in the Missouri Valley finals to Northern Iowa and did not get a bid, we went to the NIT and lost in the first round.

Last year, I went to the players and said, "Look, if we’re not going to approach this like we want to win it, I’m not accepting the bid. You guys tell me."

They had a closed-door meeting to decide and I honestly didn’t know which way it would go. That group re-dedicated themselves and it carried over into this season.

No doubt our guys have a chip on their shoulder. They’d love to get a piece of some of those quote-unqoute high-major programs. If you don’t bar the stadium door on us, you better be careful ! ..."

Get the tools you need to develop an effective center for your team.

Greg Marshall takes you inside the Wichita State program and shows you how they work on the skill development of their centers in order to have a player who is complete in all aspects of the position. This one-hour workout consists of game like drills that will enhance your post player's game skills. A focus on the position of the their feet for both the offensive player and defensive player is discussed at key times in each drill.

The Warm-Up

During the warm-up, the centers go through a series of drills that also work on game-like aspects. All key movements are exaggerated to help create muscle memory and get players loose. Included is a Mikan series with big and heavy balls to get them stronger.

Post Series

The Drop Set Series focuses on the footwork and court positioning necessary to properly execute the drop step and get the defender out of position. Jump hooks follow the drop set series. Another set teaches centers how to recognize the double team and how to react.

Passing

Develop your centers to become great passers. Good passing centers not only make their teammates better, but also become a greater threat offensively. The use of the heavy ball is emphasized here as the players go through making a series of fundamental passes to become a better passer out of the post. This is followed up with an outlet drill where Coach Marshall demands his centers make the right pass and a great pass once they get a defensive rebound.

1-On-1

The Finish Drill is a great competitive drill that starts on the elbow and works both offense and defense where neither player has an advantage at the start. The next drill has the centers playing live 1-on-1 in the post continuously.

Coach Marshall and his staff are very technical throughout this video. They are very clear in their expectations and show how to positively correct flaws in players. This is a must have video for teams that not only run four out one in motion offense, but can also be used by any team because of the technicality that is talked about and demonstrated throughout the video.

This video will enhance your team's competitive nature while developing your center position.

About Coach Gregg Marshall

Basketball Skill Development Workout Series 4-Pack DVD with Gregg Marshall
Gregg Marshall (born February 27, 1963) is an American college basketball coach who currently leads the Wichita State Shockers men's basketball team of Wichita State University (WSU). He previously served as the head coach of the Winthrop Eagles men's basketball team of Winthrop University. Marshall has coached his mid-major teams to appearances in the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament in eight of the past fourteen seasons

Marshall spent two years (1985–87) as an assistant at his alma mater, Randolph-Macon College, in Ashland, Virginia, and another year as an assistant at Belmont Abbey College during the 1987–88 season.

He then spent eight years under John Kresse at the College of Charleston from 1988 to 1996, where the program received an at-large 1994 NCAA bid, and NIT invitations in 1995 and 1996.
He became an assistant coach at Marshall University, serving from 1996 to 1998.

Marshall became the head coach at Winthrop University in 1998, and led the Winthrop Eagles men's basketball team to seven NCAA tournament appearances and transformed a previously undistinguished program into a mid-major powerhouse.

In his first season at Winthrop in 1998–99, he compiled a record of 19–8 (9–1 in Big South Conference play), coaching the Eagles to their first regular season Big South title. They went on to win the Big South Conference Tournament, earning the Eagles their first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament. As a No. 16 seed, the team lost to the No. 1 seed Auburn Tigers in the first round, 80–41.

During his nine seasons at Winthrop, Marshall coached the team to six regular season titles (1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007), seven Big South Tournament titles (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007), six 20-win seasons (1999, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007), and was named Big South Coach of the Year four times (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007).

In 2006, he became the all-time winningest coach in Winthrop men's basketball history. During the 2006–07 season, Marshall became the first coach in the history of the Big South Conference to have his team go undefeated in conference play.

The 2006 NCAA Tournament matched No. 15 seed Winthrop against the No. 2 seed Tennessee Volunteers, the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division champion, in the first round. Winthrop led for much of the game, only to lose 63-61 on a long jump shot with 2.9 seconds remaining. In 2007, Marshall became the first Big South coach to win an NCAA first round tournament game by defeating No. 6 seed Notre Dame.

Marshall's success at the mid-major level created a lot of speculation that he could be a contender for the coaching position at North Carolina State University, which was vacated with the departure of Herb Sendek. Sidney Lowe, a former NC State player and former head coach of the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies, was eventually named the head coach of the Wolfpack. Marshall accepted an offer to coach the College of Charleston in June 2006 but changed his mind after the press conference introducing him as coach and returned to Winthrop.

Marshall accepted Wichita State University's offer to coach its Wichita State Shockers men's basketball team on April 14, 2007 At Wichita State, he broke into the AP Top 25 poll on February 13, 2012, the first time since December 25, 2006, and only the second time since 1983.

Wichita State made its first appearance in the NCAA tournament since the 2005–06 season. The Shockers were matched as a No. 5 seed versus the No. 12 seed VCU Rams, but the Shockers lost 62–59.

“... We’re going to get up and down, we’re going to run. We’re going to be tough for defenses to prepare against, because we’re going to spread the court. ...... We’ve got to be able to be a tough team defensively.

You’re so consumed by what you do as a coach you don’t have enough time. It’s every day of the year, there’s no offseason for us as a coach. So you don’t get a chance to really go back and evaluate other programs. You don’t get a chance [to], as much as you would like to, look at what you do and how you do it. ......

And I think the TV experience was really beneficial for me to be able to see so many coaches, so many teams in games and practices talking to other coaches about what they do, how they do it. The mistakes that they’ve learned from, and I think it’s made me a better coach as I reflected on some things that were successful for me and some things that weren’t. ...”
Coach Keno Davis

• Get 5-on-0 and 5-on-5 half court "cutters" offense and
full court offensive sets that combine the flex and triangle offenses
• Learn fast break philosophy, principles, and drills that you can
   implement right into your system
• See how you can use stats in practice to emphasize playing time
   and player development
• Watch an extensive coaching clinic that explains every aspect
of their defensive, offensive, and fast break philosophy

with Keno Davis, Central Michigan Head Coach;
2008 AP National Coach of Year

2008 AP National Coach of the Year award winner Keno Davis invites you to his first three practices of the 2012-13 season to prepare for a summer basketball trip.
Coach Davis takes you through two practices geared towards preparing his players for the season and a Central Michigan Coaches Clinic.
He outlines their offensive and defensive philosophies; fast break game, rebounding emphasis, and zone break downs on both the offensive and defensive end.

Practice 1:
Coach Davis introduces a variety of drills that will help build transition offense and defense. He uses a simple 2-on-0 and 2-on-1 drill to emphasize catching the ball in transition and finishing strong around the rim.
From there, he builds the transition game into 5-on-0 segments where his players sprint the floor and look to finish in transition or move right into their motion offense and how to they break a press.

Please, Refresh the Page if You Can't watch the Preview and the Videos !

You'll see how they use technology in practice by having his players watch film from the previous day's practice session. He outlines their use of stats and how important it is to get yourself better each day in practice if you want to be good and play more.

Watch how Davis takes full advantage of his practice space and time during his station break out session that focuses on offense, defense and rebounding. These small learning segments focus on cutting to the hoop, using effective pump fakes and finishing around the rim.

Defense is another key area addressed in this practice. Whether it's working on defensive principles such as stunt and recover, ball pressure or help-the-helper, you will get a great look at how to keep your players engaged in practice at all times. Coach finishes with a 5-on-5 break out session where they work offensively on their cutters and quick hitters.

Practice 2:
As the players come back for a second session, you get a look at how Coach Davis develops his players individually with pre-practice break-out drills. These drills allow his players to get up lots of shots at game spots within their offense. He puts his post players through a challenging workout in order to build their intensity level for practice.

Bringing the team back together, Davis begins to implement their offense, defense, and fast break play. He demonstrates 5-on-0 and 5-on-5 segments where his players review their offensive principles. During the 5-on-5 segments, he focuses on perfecting his offensive sets and motion offense against a live defense. He wants his players to be able to execute a play when the defense knows the play is coming.

You will get a great look at how to utilize your assistants in practice so that your players get a different perspective of your offensive and defensive concepts.

Practice 3:
In this third installment of All Access Practice, Keno Davis and the Central Michigan University's Chippewas take the court for a coaches clinic. Coach runs through a typical practice, but opens up the floor for more explanation of why they run a certain drills, offensive plays, or defensive match-ups.

Coach Davis brings out the stat board they use in practice and goes over every stat you can use to show your players how they are playing in practice. This gives them the ability to explain why a player isn't playing as much or how a player can improve to earn more playing time.

With each drill they do, Davis talks about points of emphasis, things to watch for, and how to correct mistakes during the drill. He takes full advantage of the scrimmages in the half court to make his players play with passion and intensity.
Whether it's describing the use of pads during a finishing drill, breaking down the reasoning and responsibilities of their 3-2 zone defense, or walking you through several offensive series such as cutters and out of bounds sets, he makes you think about how to organize your practice time to become an effective coach and teacher on the court.

He finishes with a question and answer session outlining his philosophy and teaching on rebounding, fast break responsibilities, press and press break principles, and their main half court motion offense that combines the flex and triangle offensive principles.

Basketball Multi-Position Workouts with Mike Procopio
Basketball Multi-Position Workouts

• Efficiently run your offensive workouts
when you have groups of players
   who play multiple positions
• Effectively train fundamentals like spacing,
   cutting, driving, shooting, footwork,
   screening, posting up and more
• Create drills that emphasize
a team concept where every player
   is an offensive threat

with Mike Procopio,
Director/President of Hoop Consultants;
Director of Basketball Operations for ATTACK Athletics in Chicago (IL);
has worked with Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Caron Butler,
as well as 75 other NBA players;
Strategic Game Management Coach to Kobe Bryant
for the past two seasons (2 NBA Championships)

Having a mix of players in a workout setting can be a challenge. Mike Procopio shows you how to use 2-on-0 and 3-on-0 drills to develop the fundamentals that make players great and improve the flow of your team offense.

Using a maximum of three and four players per repetition, these drills are simple to learn and fast-moving. Each drill in this on-court presentation is designed to ingrain basketball's most important offensive concepts into your players: Spacing, timing, cutting, driving lanes, change of pace, and more. At the same time, players will also work on skills such as footwork, setting screens, posting up, using the right pass for each situation, reading the defense in pick and roll, and shooting.

You will be able to teach and correct essential techniques that will make your team more efficient, more dangerous, and smarter.

The drills in this DVD build on each other for specific offensive schemes like pick and roll, pick and pop, baseline cross screen, and dribble penetration and therefore adjust easily to your own strategy. This makes it impossible for defenses to focus on just one player and it teaches your players to take advantage of every situation, whether on or off the ball.

Use this DVD to quickly teach your players this season's set plays in an energetic way using Coach Procopio's breakdown drills.

Using the drills and concepts in this DVD will dramatically improve your players' individual and team skills and their basketball IQ.

Building Your Basketball Half Court Offense
with Shell Drills

• Use use the shell drill to teach your offense

• Break down all scoring options for
your players and make every player
on the floor a scoring threat
• Efficiently use practice time by working
on multiple offensive concepts in each drill

   Management Coach for Kobe Bryant

with Mike Procopio,
Director/President of Hoop Consultants;
Director of Basketball Operations for ATTACK Athletics in Chicago (IL);
has worked with Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Caron Butler,
as well as 75 other NBA players;
Strategic Game Management Coach to Kobe Bryant
for the past two seasons (2 NBA Championships)

Much like using shell defense to teach man-to-man defensive concepts, Mike Procopio demonstrates how you can develop an effective and smart offense using 3-on-0 and 4-on-0 shell drills. This extensive on-court demonstration contains drills for numerous offensive sets you can apply directly--or easily adapt--to your own philosophy and sets.

With each drill, Procopio begins by teaching the first scoring option and then building it out to cover all ensuing options. This makes it easy for your players to understand your team's offensive strategy and grow an individual repertoire of skills.

Beginning with Pin Down screens, your players will learn to immediately read the defense's actions and either score or hit the appropriate next option. Whether it's an open jump shot, a fade off the screen, backdoor action or a drive and kick, each option is demonstrated for you.

In addition to Pin Downs, Procopio covers Cross Screens, UCLA cuts, Horns, Wide Pin Downs, Transition Quick Hitters, Floppy, Zipper, and Side Pick and Rolls. Each of these principles is taught step-by-step and in 3-on-0 and 4-on-0 settings.

In transition, Procopio uses 2-on-0 player action to demonstrate how your players should feed the post, post up and how to cut once the ball has been entered into the post. He outlines three basic principles every post player should know, demonstrates every angle, screen, and cut your post players can make while posting up out of transition, and then demonstrates how to execute a pass, dribble motion, or attacking look while in the post.

Coach Procopio uses the popular pick and roll action that is widely used today and teaches you how to effectively move and interact coming off of the screen. He teaches your guards how to set up their man and run them into a screen coming off of the wing, and demonstrates such scoring options as a pick and pop, pick and roll, pick and skip, and pick and attack.

In all of these segments, Procopio goes through multiple ways to beat the defense. A constant emphasis in all drills is good footwork, hard cuts, movement off the pass, using the appropriate pass for the situation, coming off screens, reading the defense, taking angles, good positioning, change of pace and direction, and spacing on the court.

You can teach not only movements and plays, but improve your players' skill sets in the same drills.

With coach Procopio's breakdown drills and insight, your teams will be able to run multi-faceted offenses with a great understanding of the game.

Keep your players engaged as you teach them the foundations of your offense and defense.

In the last of this three-part series, Mike Procopio demonstrates how you can develop effective and savvy players using 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 drills.

Having developed the fundamentals of your offensive philosophy using 2-on-0, 3-on-0, and 4-on-0 drills in the Building Your Half Court Offense with Shell Drills DVD, this video implements those concepts into competitive offensive and defensive 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 drills. Using this system will allow your players to put up game shots at game spots and learn to defend, while you teach the terminology that you use at both ends of the court.

You'll see Pin Downs, Cross Screens, and Wide Pin Downs in controlled 3-on-3 mini scrimmages.

In the 4-on-4 drills, the focus is on the pick-and-roll and screen-the-screener actions. All the details covered in earlier DVDs are now expected to be executed correctly and players are held accountable for their mistakes. This is a great way to teach the fundamental understanding of 5-on-5 principles and movement.

Coach Procopio breaks down proper spacing when using 3-on-3 action to familiarize players with the attacking angles and cutting action of your offensive system. He demonstrates various cuts (pin down, cross-screen, and down screen) and uses a 3-on-0 breakdown to start implementing each action. This progresses into 3-on-3 sets where he outlines open shots at game spots.

Coach Procopio shows you how to incorporate popular NBA cutting actions Floppy and Zipper into your 3-on-0 breakdowns so your players learn how to correctly execute screens. Your post players will benefit greatly as he outlines all the scoring options for your post players. He goes into great detail on screening action in the 3-on-0 and 3-on-3 breakdowns so that your players can learn how to cut and move without the basketball while maintaining effective spacing.

Each drill has specific options and limitations that will still allow your players to be creative, while you can focus on implementing the details of both the offensive and the defensive side.

With coach Procopio's breakdown drills and insight, your teams will be able to run multi-faceted offenses with a great understanding of the game.

analyzing a game film to help Kobe Bryant prepare for the season.

About Coach Mike Procopio

Basketball Individual and Team Development Series 3-Pack DVDs with Mike Procopio
Mike Procopio is in charge of all NBA, Pre-draft, and grassroots workouts for ATTACK Athletics.
Mike has worked with players such as Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Devin Harris, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, Tracy McGrady, Gilbert Arenas, Mike Finley, and over 150 other NBA players.
Mike is renowned for his work serving as Kobe Bryant's Strategic Game Management Coach (see below) in the 2009 and 2010 playoffs.
He also served as an assistant coach for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League.

"... Kobe Bryant wanted to hear the Boston accent. He wanted to hear the wisdom of the street, he wanted to hear the wise-ass comments. He wanted to hear what "Sweetchuck" had to say.

Throughout the past season and a half, Bryant was leaning on the self-taught expertise of a white bald guy who is no taller than 5-foot-7 and no thinner than 220 pounds. Sweetchuck would analyze every upcoming game for Bryant and he would do so without reverence.

'Sweetchuck' is Mike Procopio and he's 37. When he was growing up in Revere, Mass., a rough seaside town near the Boston airport, he was nicknamed after the nerdish character Carl Sweetchuck who was tormented by Bobcat Goldthwait in the Police Academy movies. "My friends used to always beat the crap out of me,'' he said. "I thought the nickname was quarantined at the city limits."

Six years ago, Sweetchuck quit his job as a scout for the Celtics to become a full-time associate of Tim Grover at ATTACK Athletics, the 65,000-square foot training center for NBA players in Chicago. Yet, Sweetchuck continues to bust his former employers and colleagues.

His advice is technical and specific to dozens of situations and the difference it made is impossible to quantify.
'He's my Jack Bauer,' said Bryant. 'He was my eyes and ears, so when I played the game I'd use all the scouting reports and all the information. And it was huge
for me.' ..." Ian Thomsen

The 17th head coach in the history of the Rutgers men’s basketball program, Mike Rice has made a definite impact on Garden State hoops and will continue to push the Scarlet Knights to greater heights with a relentless style that has become his trademark.

The Pittsburgh, Pa. native entered his third season in 2012-13 with a more experienced roster built to play a high energy style at both ends of the floor.

Rice balances an indomitable courtside manner with an approachable, self-deprecating persona off the hardwood. In his two seasons “On the Banks,” he has directed RU to many tangible accomplishments.

The Rutgers Athletic Center has enjoyed a renaissance as one of the most difficult places to play in all of college basketball. Three of the last four top 10 programs to enter the truncated pyramid have exited Piscataway in defeat. ......

with Mike Rice, Rutgers University Head Coach;
former Robert Morris University Head Coach;
2008 NEC Jim Phelan Coach of the Year

Take a behind the scenes look at the high intensity, focused practice sessions at Rutgers. Head Coach Mike Rice brings intensity and energy to his practice sessions from start to finish.

You get a front-row seat to watch how Coach Rice organizes his practices to create game-speed scenarios that you can incorporate into your program to push your players physically and mentally and better prepare them for game night.

Practice 1

Coach Rice starts his Rutgers season by creating an atmosphere of chaos. He builds defensive instinct right from day one. He focuses on close-outs while emphasizing sideline and baseline shading techniques to eliminate middle penetration.

Full court drills, such as "Circle the Wagons" and "4 on 4 on 4" place players in a full court, game-like setting. Rice then reverts back to a controlled half-court approach with drills such as "3 Around 1", to teach help awareness when the defense is has a small guard mismatched in the post.

Practice ends with various 2-on-2 drills to build the screen and re-screen action that is the basis for the Rutgers' offense. He instructs players to constantly screen, relocate, and screen again while never executing the same type of screen consecutively.

Practice 2

Help your players get comfortable playing at a chaotic pace !

The session opens with individual skill development, as guards and posts are split into stations to better focus on technique and fundamentals. Coach Rice has a great mix of offensive and defensive skill work during practice two.

In Italian Drill, his players work on their up-tempo, attacking, hand-off motion offense that involves screening and re-screening the screener for open layups or jump shots.

Coach Rice spends time working 5-on-5 full court in order to prepare and construct their offensive and defensive schematics. He uses offensive and defensive shell work to teach his players how to handle a zone.

He uses two different zone quick hitters: Stanford and Blitz to help his players create great scoring opportunities with a jump shot or a slip in the post. During the shell drill, Rice implements his 22 Press that leads into a zone defense in order to continue their chaotic style of play.

Practice shifts back to a defensive mind-set as Rice explains and teaches the team approach to help defense rotations when a teammate is beaten for a baseline drive. Shell scenarios also include how to defend the elbow screen and stagger screen, as Rice continues to build the technique and philosophy that the team will use to counter the opposition's varied attacks throughout the season.

Practice 3

Rice focuses on actions within the motion offense during his Feed the Post Dribble Hand Off Drill. The post player and dribble handoffs are a vital part of their offensive system. He breaks down their offensive screening action in 3-on-3 breakdown. He gives his players a short amount of time to score or get a stop to keep a theme of chaos spread throughout the entire practice.

In game to 7, Coach Rice stresses the importance of the screening action. He wants his players to create an attacking mentality within the offense and be strong with the ball while learning how to play within their offensive system.

Coach Rice will teach you a great re-screen offense when he demonstrates Re-Screen Breakbacks. Coach teaches his players different entries that will flow right into their primary motion screening offense.

Coach Rice finishes his third day of practice with a great 5-on-5 scrimmage using both man and zone defense. He has his players develop a sense of "Big East style of play" as they sprint up and down the floor creating chaos in everything they do.

Learn a chaotic style of offensive and defensive play that will force your opponents to play outside of their comfort zone.

About the Author: Mike Rice
All Access Rutgers Basketball Practice with Mike Rice
Mike Rice Jr. (born February 13, 1969 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American college basketball coach and the current head men's basketball coach at Rutgers University, formerly holding the same position at Robert Morris. He is the son of former college basketball coach and current Portland Trail Blazers announcer Mike Rice. In 2009, he helped lead Robert Morris to its first NCAA Tournament since 1992. He resides in Little Silver, New Jersey.

The nonconference success extended to the always rugged BIG EAST conference campaign. Rutgers downed No. 9-ranked Villanova at home in one of college basketball’s most thrilling finishes and won two of three against rival Seton Hall. An overtime victory against the Pirates at Madison Square Garden marked RU’s first BIG EAST tournament win since 2006.

The success on the court has been matched by the team’s achievement in the classroom. The cumulative team grade point average combined for the summer 2011, fall 2011 and spring 2012 semesters was 3.003. In addition, RU received a perfect academic progress score of 1000 in the most recent report for 2010-11, Rice’s first season at the helm. All six seniors to play under Rice have earned diplomas. Seven players were named to the 2011-12 BIG EAST All-Academic Team.

The success on the court and in the classroom also extends into the community. Rice has been proactive in the program’s efforts to make a difference in the lives of children and the disadvantaged. The team participates in a multitude of community outreach initiatives, including the “Scarlet Letters” pen pal program, “Read Across America” and “Toys for Tots.” Rutgers basketball players volunteer at Elijah’s Promise soup kitchen in New Brunswick and are active in the NABC’s “Ticket to Reading Rewards” program.
In addition, players volunteer at the United Way’s Gifts for the Season program and deliver toys to children during the holidays via the Student Athlete Advisory Committee Toy Drive.

Rick Majerus: The Encyclopedia of the 4-Out-1-In Motion Offense
Rick Majerus: The Encyclopedia
of the 4-Out-1-In Motion Offense
By Rick Majerus

This motion offense uses four perimeter players and one post player, and is a good offense to use when your team has good outside players and only a few post players.

Generally, we like to run the 4-out motion offense against man-to-man defenses.
However, you can use the 4-out, 1-in set as a zone offense, although the rules are different.
The now popular "dribble-drive motion offense" uses a 4-out set and very little screening.

About Coach Rick Majerus

"... Rick Majerus (born February 17, 1948 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin) is an American college basketball coach, and the men's basketball head coach at Saint Louis University. He coached previously at Marquette University (1983-1986), Ball State University (1987-1989), and the University of Utah (1989-2004).

Majerus graduated from Marquette University High School in 1966 and then attended Marquette, where he tried-out as a walk-on in the 1967 season. He did not play for Marquette, but stayed on as a student assistant. He graduated in 1970 with a degree in history. He began coaching eighth-graders at St. Sebastian Grade School in Milwaukee, then coached freshmen high schoolers at Marquette University High School. He was an assistant coach with the Marquette Warriors for 12 years, under mentor Al McGuire until 1977, and under Hank Raymonds until taking over as head coach himself in 1983. After three years as head coach at Marquette, and a 56-35 record, he became an assistant coach with the National Basketball Association's Milwaukee Bucks for the 1986–87 season. He coached at Ball State during the 1987-88 and 1988-89 seasons, finishing with a record of 43-17.

He was an assistant coach under Don Nelson for the US national team in the 1994 FIBA World Championship, winning the gold medal.

He led Utah to the Final Four in 1998, eventually losing to Kentucky in the National Championship Game. He was greatly affected by the loss, and claims to be able to recap the last six minutes of the championship game second by second. While at Utah, he was known for living out of a hotel room, noting that he liked that "There’s clean towels, my bed is turned down every night and there’s a mint on my pillow, no matter what psychological or emotional crisis the maid is going through." He left Utah in January 2004 after 15 seasons and 323 victories in part to get control of his health; he claimed to have undergone seven heart bypass operations.

Majerus was known to berate and verbally abuse his players. Lance Allred, who wrote about it in his autobiography "Longshot" told of his three years at Utah and how Majerus would humiliate him, often targeting his disability, Allred being partially deaf and requiring hearing aids. Allred transferred after the 2001-02 season and Majerus was later "cleared of any wrongdoing". While at Ball State and Utah, Majerus was considered a major candidate for numerous major head coaching positions, including UCLA, St. John's, UNLV, Arizona State, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Texas, Wisconsin, San Diego State and the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.

On December 15, 2004, Majerus was hired as coach of the University of Southern California basketball team; he was to replace interim coach Jim Saia, himself replacing fired coach Henry Bibby, with Majerus taking over effective April 1, 2005. His contract was scheduled to pay him $5 million over five years.  He gave an energetic and humorous press conference on the day of his hire, but also noting "I hope I die here. I hope I coach here the rest of my life." In order take the position, he needed to buy himself out of his contract as an analyst for ESPN.

However, Majerus unexpectedly resigned only five days later in a somber, and at times weeping, press conference. He apologized to the university and stated that his health and fitness were not yet at a stage where he thought he could perform his new duties, noting "I wanted this job so bad I was in denial where my health actually is [. . .] I realized [USC] wasn’t getting the guy they hired. I came to that conclusion myself. I’m not fit for this job by my standards."

He worked as a game and studio analyst for ESPN from 2004–2007. He made the statement while watching the University of Kentucky play in the 1996 championship that if he saw Ashley Judd before he went back to the hotel, he would not have to rent a pay per view movie.

Majerus is something of a fan favorite and cult figure around college basketball, known for his rotund figure and his quirky, jovial personality. Rick enjoys bratwursts. He has had a history of heart trouble which led to his resignation from Utah.

On April 27, 2007, Majerus accepted the head coaching position at Saint Louis University. His contract is for six years.

On March 22, 2010 (Saint Louis vs. Wisconsin-Green Bay) Majerus was spotted breaking - out of frustration - a laptop that was on press row. ..."

By Pat Summitt

One reason Pat is a good leader is that not only is she trying to lead others, she is also serving as a leader to herself.

She continually evaluates her own strengths and weaknesses; “When you identify your weaknesses, you can begin to remedy them – or at least figure out how to work around them.” (Reach for the Summit).

By continually setting new professional goals, she has been able to stay on top of her coaching game for so many years.
Pat is not willing to settle for the here and now.

She is one who constantly is trying to better herself and those around her.
By having a solid base on which to form her team, she has been able to redefine women’s basketball, blowing through the glass ceiling.

Pat Summitt's Mastering Special Situations

Pat Summitt's winning program at Tennessee is model for all sports teams. In this basketball DVD, Coach Summitt will explore insights on handling special situations. Also included are pressure, press break, zone offense, attacking junk defenses and late game situations.

Handling pressure applies to situations on and off the floor. Offensive execution is important when facing a myriad of situations from your opponent.

The initial choices are to quickly in bound the ball or set up to attack the press. "Special" is a play that releases the screener down the floor and throw the ball long. When ahead, Coach Summitt shows a play to get the ball in bounds successfully. The box press attack contains many features and alignments to beat full court pressure.

Summitt shows specifically how to beat the 1-2-1-1 press with the box press attack. Two difficult defenses to attack are the triangle and two and box and 1. In a 1-4 set, Summitt demonstrates how to defeat these junk defenses. In addition, Summitt shows several strategies to win games with a baseline out of bounds play and a set with 15 seconds left.

70 minutes. 2008.

Pat Summitt's Building a Championship Team with the Definite Dozen

Pat Summitt has established one of the greatest programs in the history of the game.

She shares how to build a championship basketball team with her "Definite Dozen," a guideline for on and off the court character traits.

A beginning coach is not provided with an instruction book for coaching.

Coach Summitt believes that your instruction book comes directly from your system. Respect is another cornerstone of the system.

Responsibility is all about team - that is, knowing your job and the job of everyone else on your team.

Good coaches exhibit good listening and communication skills to relate to players and coaches. Communication on and off the floor is crucial.

52 minutes. 2008.

Pat Summitt's Game Preparation

Legendary coach Pat Summitt brings a well prepared team to the floor every game. Her ability to get her team ready to play hard and execute is one of her many talents. Players must be informed about their opponent but not overwhelmed with information.

The first item for players to lock into is the opponent's personnel. Knowing the offensive attack of the opponent includes their transition, primary man offense, sets, zone sets and out of bounds plays.

On the floor, Coach Summitt's plan is to work on shooting drills, pressure releases, shell offense and defensive breakdown. The scouting report examines every defensive situation that could occur.

Each player must know exactly what is expected in these situations. At the end of the shoot around, players will defend the opponent's out of bounds plays. During practice much of the activity is the same.

On this DVD you will see practice drills such as; Post feeds, pressure releases, post double team, beating pressure with various cuts, shell offense featuring set plays, game shooting, free throws, defensive breakdown, post dive, main offense, baseline and sideline out of bounds.

67 minutes. 2008.

Pat Summitt's Defensive Scouting Report

Coach Summitt offers a unique look at pre-game preparation during a practice session with the Lady Vols. This presentation begins with offensive breakdown drills early in the practice. A variety of shots will be taken during several shooting drills. Defending the dribble drive is crucial for good man-to-man defense.

Summitt feels this is the most difficult thing in team defense. This segment of practice includes many different drills. These drills include the close out, one-on-one defense, 2-on-2 defense, 3-on-3 defense, defensive rotation, turn defense and keeping out of middle.

To emphasize the importance of defense, Summitt always makes a goal for the defenders in practice drills. Three consecutive box outs and defensive stops are the goal for the defensive half court drill.

Shelling offensive sets come next in the practice plan. This will give coaches the opportunity to teach sets as they play. Added to this drill is defensive transition after a shot is taken 5-0. The next step is to play 5-on-5 with defensive transition.

Putting things together, the next segment is scrimmaging against the zone defense. The workout ends with a shooting drill mixed with conditioning. Game footage shows Summitt's team executing the defensive game plan.

59 minutes. 2008.

What Makes an Effective Leader

I have recently been introduced to an arena of leaders I had never before considered, sports. Our society places such a high level of focus on sports beginning with little league, high school, college, professional, and up to the Olympics. These athletes continue to grow and constantly strive to be better. When goals are achieved, they take the time to reflect on their accomplishments and proceed in setting new goals.

In the background, these athletes have somebody who is constantly pushing and encouraging them not to be satisfied with where they are; their coach. Pat Summitt is the Head Coach for the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team and has been said to be the “all-time winningest coach in NCAA basketball history men or women”.

She has been the Head Coach of the Lady Vols for 31 seasons and has run the gambit as far as wins and losses. Her focus is not necessarily on winning, but on making sure her players are giving their all and reaching their potential because when that happens, the win is to follow. Often times her methods are looked upon as being insensitive and animated, however Pat is a firm believer in work hard, play hard.

Throughout her career, Pat has been asked what her formula is for her unbelievable success. She has developed a set of rules she expects all her players to know and live by; The Definite Dozen. The Definite Dozen is more less a “set of commandments” (Reach for the Summit). The Definite Dozen gives the Lady Vols their foundation upon which they build their team. Without a foundation in which to build upon, at any moment the structure could collapse and you would have to build all over again. One of these mentioned principles can not exist without the other.

About The Definite Dozen

Respect Yourself and Others is the first of the Definite Dozen. Respect is something that is earned and in order to receive it, you must give it; even to yourself. Before others can respect you, you must first respect yourself. Earning others respect is difficult, but if you have confidence in your abilities and give it your all at all times, others will begin to respect you. If Pat feels that somebody on the team is disrespecting her, she will call the player on it because in order for the team to succeed, they must trust and respect Pat’s calls.

Take Full Responsibility is an important part of any interaction, regardless if it is individual or team related. Inevitably we all make mistakes and there comes a time where we have to pay the price, humbling as it may be. The ability to take responsibility comes with maturity. One way in which Pat teaches responsibility is by establishing rules that all players must abide by during the season, and hold each player accountable.

Develop and Demonstrate Loyalty is a key component to the Lady Vols. Pat is honest in her comments regarding her staff saying that she hired them because they were better than in her those particular areas and trusts their judgment. Pat allows for her management team to discuss their ideas and entertains their opinions, even if they are contrary to her beliefs. When they come up with different ideas, she does not assume that they are disloyal; she understands everyone has different opinions. If there are any disagreements on the management team, it is done behind closed doors and when in front of the team, they are a unified front. This helps breed a positive culture in which to strive.

Lean to Be a Great Communicator appears to be one of Pat’s biggest sources of frustration. She believes that communicating both verbally and physically is as equally important on the court as it is off. Both during practice and games, Pat can be seen and heard yelling at her players. In order to perform at their best, there needs to be a constant flow of communication between the players and with the coach because if there is a lacking of it, opportunities are going to be missed. This is just as true in the business world as it is in team sports. If there is ambiguity, then the competition can come in and defeat you.

Discipline Yourself So No One Else Has To is the fifth in the Definite Dozen. “Discipline is the internal mechanism that self-motivates you” (Reach for the Summit). It is at the core of leadership. In order to be an effective leader, you yourself must be disciplined and lead by example. Nobody likes to be the bad guy but it is a necessary a function of a leader; letting the “team” know that there are consequences. Pat believes that disciple should be fair, firm, and consistent (Reach for the Summit). As Head Coach, she is sure to let each player know when they were not behaving appropriately and they in turn are reprimanded in front of the whole team, not only teaching them about their lack of discipline, but a little humility as well.

Make Hard Work Your Passion is a fundamental part of working towards a goal. Pat once said “I just can’t relate to people who don’t want to be at the top of their game everyday and [don’t] want to compete on every play.” (abcnews.com). If something is worth doing, it should be worth doing it right and it should be worth doing 100%. Trying to be your best is what should drive you, regardless of your field.

Don’t Just Work Hard, Work Smart refers not only to those doing physical work, but leaders as well. The best leaders are able to recognize their limitations and weaknesses and surround themselves with managers who are better than they are in those areas; by doing this the leader is able to focus on what they do best and allow others to do what they do best. Working smarter.

Put The Team Before Yourself is Pat’s way of saying one for all and all for one. In teamwork, it is important that you can rely on those around you and vice versa. It is more of an emotional state of mind and develops out of respect. If an individual is only out for themselves, they can not be relied upon during game time because it is not known whose interest they are thinking of first. “You win in life with people and if you think you can do this alone, you’re wrong.”

Make Winning an Attitude is as simple as it sounds. If you think you can and will win, chances are you will behave as such and in the end, you will. For business decisions and sports teams, attitude makes a difference. It is contagious and those around you can feel your confidence. “A lot of players come and go, but the great ones leave and other great ones arrive”.

Be a Competitor is saying that you need to out there to win it, no matter what it takes. Sometimes this works against the norm because competitors are not out there to make friends; they are out there to win. This builds on itself because the more a competitor wins, the more they want to win and the more driven they are to achieve that goal. This is never a boring state to be in, it is always in constant motion and leading to change, the next in line of the dozen.

Change Is a Must no matter what you are doing. As mentioned in the paragraph above, to be a better competitor than you were last time, you must be willing to analyze the environment and be willing to change things to catch the opponent of guard. If the rules never change, than sooner or later you will be defeated.

Handle Success Like You Handle Failure is saying that you learn equal amounts from both outcomes, although one feels better than the other. Without failure, you can never truly appreciate how good success feels. By learning what doesn’t work allows you to reexamine the game plan and make the necessary improvements in order to be successful next time.

Like most rules, the Definite Dozen circle back on each other, so to break one of the rules is breaking them all. In order to succeed, all the rules must be followed. These “commandments” are at the core of Pat’s leadership style and have become the culture of the Lady Vols. By using these rules as a foundation for the team, Pat believes that her believers become achievers.

Compassion and Leadership

Another key aspect that allows Pat to be an effective leader is her compassion for her players and the relationships she develops with each one off the court. By building a report, she can better understand the players, their goals, and what motivates them. Knowing each player individually helps in building trust and respect for her both personally and for her position. She prides herself on the “incredible graduation rate of her players and the success they have garnered in life...”. Each player at Tennessee has either received their degree or is in the process of obtaining it and Pat likens it to the fact that she instills discipline in each player.

Another reason Pat is a good leader is that not only is she trying to lead others, she is also serving as a leader to herself.

Pat Summitt is “intense, demanding, focused . . . very caring” and yet also has a reputation for burning hot, being overly demanding, setting to many rigid rules, and acting irrational during games. Pat has broken all the rules of women as leaders and has been essential in redefining women’s basketball. “Long-term, repetitive success is a matter of building a principled system and sticking to it. Principles are anchors; without them you will drift.” (Reach for the Summit ). Because of her firm belief in her team, herself, and the Definite Dozen, Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols continue to rank in the top of women’s basketball.

He was previously the head men's basketball coach at Pepperdine University.

He is known for developing the dribble drive motion offense, sometimes known as the Memphis Attack, AASAA offense.

On January 17, 2008, Walberg resigned from Pepperdine, citing family issues. On May 5, 2008, he officially joined head coach Derek Kellogg's staff at UMass.

1989–2002 ~ Clovis West HS
2002–2006 ~ Fresno City College
2006–2008 ~ Pepperdine
2008-2011 ~ UMass

In this DVD presentation, Vance Walberg reviews some of the basic principles and terminology from his top selling original DVD before heading into an examination of his new innovations for areas of the dribble-drive attack. In the review, Coach Walberg goes back to defining the offensive terminology, spacing, player positions, court break down and the basic premise of lane penetration.

Walberg analyzes shot selection, his two extras, what "shot means", back responsibilities, like 3's-love layups, ways to play the 4-man, importance of passing and cutting, importance of back doors, what to do when the ball goes into the post, the value of the jump stop, "AASAA", and the gaps.

Over its existance, Coach Walberg has made many modifications of the Dribble Drive. Some of the new innovations he demonstrates here include the S-gap; use of the dribble; the cuts-basket, T-cut, rub cut, X cut, corner cut and thumb cut; the value of eyes up; the value of the shoulders; and the tear drop shot and pass.

The transition into the dribble-drive attack offense is very important to its success. Walberg takes you through the players' positioning and responsibilities in transition as well as key points of emphasis and five fast break drills to create proper spacing to flow into th dribble drive seemlessly. His drills are all competitive with many teaching components for the offensive system involved.

In trying to stop the dribble drive, teams first adjustment is to go zone. Walberg teaches you how to take advantage of any zone with the dribble-drive attack. His strategies include push action, 2-game, push with 2 game, push off the pass, bump, bump off the pass, drag, "22", "23", "24", and push-fist. Each action is shown and explained in great detail as Walberg takes players through it on the floor.

You'll get some of his favorite drills like "20 Minutes of 3's." Players are paired up and must get through several preliminary shooting exercises before shooting 3's. Players chart their shots to see how many they make in the time allowed. This is a great conditioning drill and it will help you determine who will be your "Streak Shooters."

Walberg also shares individual drills for the 4-man including quick ups, lobs, jump-jump, re-locations, clean-ups, combinations, and the "Drop 4 series".

TEAM DRILLS
Walberg utilizes over 60 breakdown drills/sets to teach and demonstrate the formations and action of the Dribble Drive offense. These breakdowns are three-man groups including 1-2-4 breakdown, 1-4-5 breakdown, and 2-3-4 breakdown. In these breakdown groups, Walberg takes you through the dribble drive actions that can occur and the movements involved.

He shares examples of the rack series, drop series, drag series, fist series, pistol series, quick series, replace series, kickback series, 415 series, re-loop series, thumbs up series, and skip series. With different player combinations, Walberg shows you the series actions and how the formation of plays comes together for the Dribble Drive.

Walberg brings it all together in his "Two Stops or One Turnover Drill" which is a half court, 5-on-5 drill used to reinforce the breakdown drill work. This DVD set provides a deep look into how the Dribble Drive offense works and ways to help teach it to your team. A must for anyone using or thinking of installing the Dribble Drive.

About Coach Vance Walberg

Vance Walberg's Advanced Dribble Drive
One of the most innovative minds in the sport of basketball brings his approach and philosophy to UMass as Vance Walberg begins his third year with the Minutemen as an assistant coach. Walberg has been widely credited for bringing his dribble-drive system to the sport and has it succeed at the highest level in working with current Memphis and former UMass coach John Calipari. Walberg makes the move back east after 40 years on the west coast as a successful head coach for more than 30 years on the college, junior college and high school level.

"Vance brings an unbelievable knowledge for the game of basketball," said UMass head coach Derek Kellogg. "He has a tremendous enthusiasm, intensity and passion for what we are trying to do here at UMass in growing the basketball program. He is part of the reason why my career is where it is with us implementing his style of play and offense at Memphis. Not only is he a close personal friend, but he is also a person I trust and feel very confident in as a basketball coach. We are excited to have him on the staff. He is bringing an energy and enthusiasm and a style of play which will excite the fans, our players on the team, our recruits and everyone in the UMass community."

Walberg, who served as the head coach at Pepperdine University from 2006-08, is well-known for his system which was chronicled in Sports Illustrated in February 2008. Known as AASAA (Attack, Attack, Skip, Attack, Attack), Walberg spent 17 seasons building winning programs at Clovis West High School and Fresno City College prior to coaching the Waves for a year-and-a-half.

"Shoot, shoot and shoot some more," said Walberg in describing his system. "It's really very simple. What we do is I spread you out and attack the different gaps. We call it AASAA - Attack, Attack, Skip, Attack, Attack. Everybody gets a big plus out of it. It starts with the guards. The first thing we want them to do is come down and look to score. It's up to the guards to be able to break their man down. Once the breakdown process begins and whoever helps, that's where the kick goes. If we struggle, we reverse things and put it inside and it's time for the big guys to take over. It's really very simple."

In four years as head coach at Fresno City College from 2003-06, Walberg compiled a 133-11 (.924) record, including a perfect 34-0 mark and the California state community college championship in 2005. Using his AASAA offensive system, his teams regularly scored more than 100 points per game.

In addition, Walberg's Fresno City College teams won four straight Central Valley Conference titles, made four consecutive trips to the Northern California Playoffs, advanced to the Final Four of the state championships three times and appeared in the state title game in 2003 and 2005.

Walberg and his 2004-05 Rams became just the third team, and the first in 35 years, to post an undefeated season in California community college history. Fresno City College's 83-68 victory over San Bernardino College in the championship game also marked Walberg's 100th coaching victory at the school, a milestone he reached in just three years.

In 2005-06, Fresno City College went 33-6 and advanced to the semifinals of the state championships before falling 71-67 to Fullerton College at Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif.

Walberg was twice named California Community College Coach of the Year (2003 and 2005) and was tabbed the CVC Coach of the Year in each of his four seasons.

During a 13-year career (1990-2002) as head coach at Clovis West High School in Fresno, Calif., Walberg guided his teams to a 343-68 (.834) overall record, nine league titles, 10 CIF Central Section Championships appearances (including six titles) and three showings in the Southern State Championship Game. Clovis West earned Top 10 rankings in the state six times (1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2002) and was ranked nationally in the USA Today Top 25 in 2000 and 2001. The 2001 team finished the year ranked #12 nationally.

Prior to taking over at Clovis West, Walberg was head basketball coach at Newark (Calif.) Memorial High School for five seasons (1985-89). There, he won one league title and made two appearances in the CIF North Coast Section Championships. He also served as badminton coach at James Logan High School (1983-84) and head basketball coach at Los Altos High School (1981-83) and Mountain View High School (1978-81).

In 2001, Walberg was selected the Cal-Hi State Coach of the Year. He also earned league coach of the year honors nine times, section coach of the year on six occasions and was tabbed the California and West Region (Section 7) Coach of the Year in 1999.

Walberg, a 1974 graduate of Monta Vista High in Cupertino, Calif., was a two-year varsity letterwinner in basketball. He helped the Matadors to a league championship was named the team's Most Valuable Player.

In two seasons at De Anza Community College, he won two conference championships and concluded his career as the school's all-time steals leader. While at Cal State Bakersfield for the following two seasons, Walberg was twice named the school's Defensive Player of the Year and served as team captain his senior year.

Walberg's education includes a physical education degree from Cal-State Bakersfield in 1978, a teaching credential from the College of Belmont in 1979 and a master's degree in health, physical education and recreation from Saint Mary's College in 1986.

Walberg, 54, (born July 9, 1956), and his wife, Rose, have four children: Jason, 27, a former Fresno City College all-state selection and former player on the Pepperdine basketball team, who is now on the staff at Mephis under Calipari; Heather, 26, a Pepperdine Master's student; Jaimie-Rose, 24, who graduated from Pepperdine this spring; and Ian, 22, a junior at UMass.
