"...  It should be obvious that neither field goal percentage nor an "advanced basketball statistic" like true shooting percentage provide a complete description of a player's shooting ability and/or scoring prowess; a player who posts gaudy numbers in one or both of those categories may be a limited offensive contributor who can only score effectively in a very specific role (i.e., a big man who can only convert from point blank range or a slow-footed perimeter player who can only make spot up jumpers).  ..."

"... A player's offensive efficiency can only be accurately determined by examining his ability to create shots for himself and his teammates, his ability to score from a variety of areas on the court and his ability to draw double teams that can break down the opposing defense. Such evaluations can only be made by an informed observer who watches the sport with an objective eye. ..."

"...  A player who shoots .600 from the field but cannot make a shot outside of the paint and is easily defended one on one is not nearly as valuable as a player who shoots .450 from the field but can score from anywhere on the court and must be double-teamed.

Is there a way to reasonably compare two players who have such divergent skill sets? Kirk Goldsberry's solution to this problem is a new statistic that he and fellow Michigan State professor Ashton Shortridge devised: ShotScore ranks every NBA player's shooting prowess based on the relative difficulty of each shot that he took; Goldsberry and Shortridge determined the average NBA field goal percentage from every spot on the floor, compared the average percentages to each player's percentages from those spots on the floor and then expressed the results in terms of actual points scored versus expected points. ..."

Last year, NBA players took just about 200,000 shots. The league’s collective shot chart reveals the spatial nature of the NBA’s average shooting efficiency. By itself, the chart shows the stark relationship between court space and expected points per shot — that’s why 3-point shots are rapidly increasing in popularity while midrange shots are diminishing.
In this Image by Kirk Goldsberry from GrantLand.com presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis . Image: by Kirk Goldsberry from GrantLand.com

"... There is little doubt that ShotScore is a more precise measurement of a player's shooting efficiency than scoring average and/or field goal percentage.

The usefulness of ShotScore and the measured tone of Goldsberry's writing are a welcome contribution to basketball theory--and a marked contrast to the way that far too many "stat gurus" make arrogant and bold declarations that are unsupported by facts/objective observations.

However, there are some potential drawbacks to ShotScore: (1) it relies heavily on the completeness and accuracy of play by play data regarding shot locations and
(2) a person must have access to a tremendous amount of data in order to calculate a player's ShotScore. ..."

"... ShotScore could be very useful for general managers and coaches but it will be difficult for it to become a mainstream statistic unless/until the accuracy of the play by play data can be objectively proven and unless/until it becomes easier to compute each player's ShotScore; during a game, an informed observer can note the areas in which a player is effective and can instantly calculate his field goal percentage to get a "quick and dirty" estimate of his overall efficiency but there is no way that such an observer can instantly compute a ShotScore unless/until the NBA provides such data in real time (which could perhaps happen at some point). ..." Riccardo Muti: WE ARE SMALL BEFORE GOD !

The Master Lesson by Muti

This video which belongs to 'Musical America' was recorded during the award ceremony to the musician of the year of the publication 'Musical America' in December 2009. Neapolitan director Riccardo Muti makes a memorable speech about what it means to conduct an orchestra ... he means really direct... It has hilarious moments (apparently reaches a great comic gag) and ends with an exciting definitión about your job, a job he describes as "the world's most difficult profession.

Basketball Shooting Formulas Analysis & Tracking • Registro & Análisis de las Fórmulas de Lanzamiento en Básquetbol

• Más Triples y Largos Sobre el Final
• More Three-pointers & Longrange on the End

( for English Translation: See Below )

Logically, to answer to your question and let begin the discussion, it all dependes on the game situation: if your team is trailing and every point appears to matter more and more three-pointers and long distance shots shall be taken...

We made for our eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis an analysis of the shot frequencies when there are more than two minutes remaining and when there are less than two. Essentially nothing changes except for two shot selections: three-pointers and midrange/post shots.

Teams take more long distance shots at the expense of less efficient and perhaps more difficult midrange shots, especially when your team is trailing and every point appears to matter more, as said above.  With the game on the end, players want to maximize their chances of having a productive possession throughout three-pointers, for example.

Last minutes of the game, time of free throws, but also... has the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System any research about how do shot selection & percentages become different in the last minutes of the game ?

• Posesiones y la Fortaleza de un Equipo
• Possessions &  the Strength of a Team

( for English Translation: See Below )

The strength of a team is not established as the end result of a process by how many more opportunities at scoring it gets ( what our eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis call "plays" ), but on the contrary how much better it is at scoring with the possessions it has.

There's no "bonus" because possessions are imprecise but fairly close to be equal between a team and its opponent in any determined game. The way we define possessions (see here this excellent thread in this forum: Basketball Possessions: About the Concept, is the time from when one team gets the ball to when the other team gets it back.

Possessions have built-in attributes that make them unmeasurable utilitarians, the largest amount of which being that the number of possessions between a team and their opponents are identical.

Basketball Shooting Formulas Analysis & Tracking • Registro & Análisis de las Fórmulas de Lanzamiento en Básquetbol

• Team Efficiency & Possessions Bonus
• Eficiencia de Equipo y Posesiones Bonus

( para Traducción al Español= Ver a Continuación )

This is my first question in this forum, so please forgive me if this topic is very simple or has been discussed before...

Playing with winning %, point differential, offensive and defensive efficiency, I have a problem with the possession differential: teams with more possessions than their opponents get a "bonus" to their efficiency ratings thanks to the extra possessions.

Therefore, I want to know what is the standard way of statistically evaluating team strength ?

• Best Percentage at Last 3 Seconds

( for English Translation: See Below )

That's correct: the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System registers the shooting by type, zone, number of players in the play, etc. and also register the second of the shooting clock when the shot was taken:
the complete answer with the analysis is uploaded at the courses of the eBA ONLINE Clinics, but this synthesis answer your question:

On average the shots are made between the 11 and 12 seconds of the shooting clock.
A 7.6% are taken between the seconds 1 and 8/9.
In the first half of the clock: first 12 seconds, a 57.1% of the shots are taken.
In the last quarter of the clock: last 6 seconds, only a 15.1% of the shots were registered; but, nevertheless, the best field percentage is obtained in the last  three seconds of the 24 seconds shooting clock.

This research is based on more than 1000 Euroleague games, analyzed from 1988 ( when it was called European Cup ), and is presented in the eBA ONLINE Clinics, which next 'Basketball Statistics Register Course' begins on Monday 05, March 2007, and there is no more available vacancies.

( for English Translation= See Below )

We know that the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System records the second of the shooting possession: into the 4 - 8 - 16 - 20 or 24 seconds. Are there any data about when - in which second of the 24 -  the shoots are taken ?

• Índice Ajustado de Puntos x Partido
• Adjppg - Adjusted Points per Game Formula

( for English Translation= See Below )

Adjusted points per game (Adjppg) is just points per possession times the league average of possessions per team per game.

This scales its yearly average to be as the league average for PPG -Points per Basketball Game.

This method applies in a straightforward manner to teams. It has never been applied to individuals.

The place at our site you refer to, is Basketball Statistics Formulas and not the eBA Basketball Coach Corner.
