Algunos elementos del Libro de Reglas de FIBA, para luego proceder a los ejemplos en el próximo mensaje:
Sabido es que si hay dos equipos igualados en la clasificación, se utilizará el resultado entre ellos para determinar el orden. En caso de que el total de puntos anotados y recibidos sea el mismo en los partidos disputados entre los dos equipos, la clasificación se establecerá por el promedio de puntos, teniendo en cuenta el resultado de todos los partidos que ambos equipos disputaron en el grupo.

Si hay más de dos equipos igualados en la clasificación, se establecerá una segunda clasificación teniendo en cuenta sólo el resultado de los partidos disputados entre los equipos empatados.
Si sigue habiendo equipos empatados después de establecerse esta segunda clasificación, se utilizará el promedio de puntos para determinar el orden, teniendo en cuenta únicamente el resultado de los partidos disputados entre esos equipos.

En caso de que continúe habiendo equipos empatados, el orden se establecerá utilizando el promedio de puntos del resultado de todos los partidos disputados en el grupo. El promedio de puntos siempre se calculará por división (el Sistema del Cociente).

Some elements from the FIBA Rules Book, to proceed afterwards with the examples in the next message:
As we know if there are two teams in the classification with equal points, the results of the games between the two teams involved will be used to determine the placings. If the points and the goal average in the games between the two teams are still the same, the classification will be determined by the goal average of all the games played in the group by each team.

If more than two teams are equal in the placing, a second classification will be established, taking into account only the results of the games between the teams that are tied.
If there are still teams tied after the second classification, then goal average will be used to determine the placing, taking into account only the results of the games between the teams still tied.

If there are still teams tied, the placing will be determined using the goal average from the results of all their games played in the group. Goal Average will always be calculated by division (the Quotient System).

When performing division, the number of times one value can be divided into the other value is the quotient. For example, when dividing 7 by 3, 3 goes in to 7 twice, making 6, and the remainder is 1, so the quotient is 2.

A quotient system is a type of tiebreaker that is typically used when several teams have identical won/loss records in round robin pool play during the opening round of a tournament.

If you remember math terms from high school, one divides the dividend by the divisor yielding the quotient. Any tie breaking system that involves comparing results of a division operation could be considered a quotient system.

A typical quotient system in basketball would be to add up the total points scored by each team and divide it by the total points allowed by each team. The team with the highest quotient (result of the division of points scored by points allowed) moves on to bracket play.

Un  sistema de cociente es un sistema para resolver situaciones de  empate que es típicamente empleado cuando varios equipos tienen idénticos registros de partidos ganados-perdidos al cabo de alguna fase de un torneo deportivo.

Si Usted recuerda términos matemáticos de la escuela secundaria, se divide el dividendo por el divisor resultando el cociente o "cuociente". Cualquier sistema de resolver empates que implique comparación de resultados de una operación de división puede ser considerado un sistema de cociente.

Un típico sistema de cociente en baloncesto  podría ser sumar todos los puntos convertidos por cada equipo y dividirlos por los puntos concedidos por cada equipo. El equipo con cociente más alto (resultado de la división de puntos a favor por los puntos en contra) resuelve el problema de triple empate.
