Tara VanDerveer's contributions to the sport of women's basketball reach far outside the collegiate world. She became internationally known in 1996 when she guided the United States Olympic Women's Basketball Team to the gold medal in Atlanta.

VanDerveer led the National/Olympic team, which included Stanford products Jennifer Azzi and Katy Steding, to an incredible 60-0 record from 1995-1996. Overall, VanDerveer has compiled an 88-8 (.917) record, including four gold medals, in eight head coaching stints with USA Basketball.

The coaching great paved the way for many more Stanford milestones in October 2006 by signing a six-year contract extension that will keep her on The Farm through the 2011-12 campaign.

• Utilize partner drills to work on passing,
   closeouts, and pick-and-roll situations

3x NCAA Coach of the Year; 2010 NCAA National Runners-up;
2x NCAA Championship Coach; 5 straight final four appearances (2008-12);
1996 US Women's Olympic Team Head Coach (Gold Medal);
distinguished member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball
Hall of Fame Class of 2011.

The Stanford women have been a dominating force in the NCAA since the mid 1980's under legendary head coach Tara VanDerveer. In this video, you will see why the Cardinal have had so much success.

From warm-ups to shell drills, Coach VanDerveer demonstrates over 25 of her favorite practice drills. Whether you are looking for a passing, shooting, ball handling, rebounding, offensive, or defensive drills, it's all here.

To prepare her team for practice, Coach Vanderveer takes her players through a ball handling routine. In China Passing, you will see how to communicate and pass quickly while effectively catching on the run and executing your next pass. You will be amazed at the number of game shots you can get up in the Viking Shooting drill, which incorporates shot fakes and coming off of screens to perfect footwork.

Please, Refresh the Page if You Can't watch the Preview, photographs or the Videos !

Coach Vanderveer explains how they teach defense in a detailed shell drill. Within her shell drill, you will learn how to limit your opponents offensive possessions, contesting shots on every offensive player through proper closeout technique, and how to "get skinny" in order to get through off-ball screens. As she puts it, this drill is her player's least favorite because it is the hardest and most demanding drill she puts them through.

Coach Vanderveer takes you through several drills that the USA Women's Olympic team used to be successful in recent Olympic games. In USA Lay-Ups, she teaches you how to incorporate passing, cutting, and sprinting to your spot off of different actions.

Team offensive concepts are covered, as well. See how Coach Vanderveer teaches her players the actions, scoring options, and transition play within the Stanford offensive system. You will see how Vanderveer teaches their triangle offense in a 5-on-0 and 5-on-5 setting. By teaching such drills as Blue Shooting and Drag Shooting, her players are ready for any scoring option on the floor within their offensive system. Coach Vanderveer also shows how to incorporate the Princeton backdoor cut into your offensive strategy.

Each drill is designed to improve the team's strategy and skill set. With each drill, Vanderveer describes and demonstrates how the drill is run and how they incorporate it into their offensive system.

Challenge your team mentally and physically while building your players individual skills and team concepts with this unique look into one of America's top basketball programs.

Legendary Stanford coach Tara Vanderveer brings you an extensive player development workout for post/perimeter players. Coach Vanderveer covers many drills for post and perimeter players that will get your team playing better individually and together and will inspire you to create breakdown drills for your offense.

Drills and Skills for Perimeter Players

The Perimeter Series works on everything from perfecting the catch-and-shoot, to executing the pick-and-roll and seeing all of the options available to score. Coach Vanderveer demonstrates and explains each skill and drill they use when developing their perimeter players. She takes you through numerous offensive moves that will help your players become successful with the basketball.

She demonstrates the jab series for attacking the rim off the dribble and counters you can use when the defense stops your dribble. With each perimeter skill, Coach Vanderveer incorporates their offensive movement so that their players can develop their shot at game spots.

Coach uses two great combination drills, Beaver Creek and Morgan Drill, to work on every offensive skill needed to be successful in the Stanford offense. Whether it's hand-offs, post entry, backdoor cuts, skip passes, or dribble drives these drills are great for any offensive player or team looking to get game shots within their offensive.

Drills and Skills for Post Players

Discover Stanford's three part post player workout!

• Part One - See a position workout featuring drop step moves, sealing
   techniques, and footwork to get open in the high and low post.

• Part Two - Watch how Vanderveer develops her post players
   using screening techniques.

• Part Three - See individual drill and skill work including Mikan,
   jump hook series, playing 1-on-1, and rebound ricochet players work
   on rebounding the basketball and executing effective outlets
   to start their break.

Incorporated within her post player development are ways to trap a good post player and rotate out of the trap to eliminate easy skip passes for outside jump shots.

With Tara VanDerveer's Post and Perimeter drills, your players will expand their offensive skill repertoire and become stellar performers on the court.
