• Point Guard Philosophy & Mentality
• Form Shooting
• Level II Warm-up with the Jump Rope
• Defensive Concepts & Lateral Movement Drills
• Stationary Ball Handling
• First Step Drills with Resistance Bands

with Jason Otter,
Inventor of the Otterbasketball efficiency of movement basketball training system;
Advanced Basketball Trainer widely consulted by the top Division I
and High School coaches in the country today:
Many coaches consider him the best trainer in the market place today;
Trainer of players of all ranges from the NBA to Elite High School players;
Director fo Otterbasketball Training events and camps across the country.

Jason's A-D Shooting is key to becoming a great shooter and point guards must be great shooters.  Point Guards will have the ball in their hands at the end of games which can mean last second shots and having to go to the free throw line.  A-D Shooting will make you a more efficient and confident shooter.

If you can shoot the basketball well, the defense must play you closer. This makes you a quicker player off the dribble making getting to the basket easier.  A-D Shooting will get your point guards mentally prepared for practice and reinforce proper mechanics.

JUMP ROPE

Basketball is a game of rhythmic footwork patterns and jumping rope reinforces that.  Jumping rope will also teach players to stay in proper kinesthetic alignment so they are efficient in all movements on the court.  Jason includes some jump rope drills that work on sticking the ball of your foot into the floor.  This will help with acceleration and change of direction on offense and defense.

The jump rope drills are a great 5 minute warmup for team or individual practice. The picutre above is a screenshot from the video. We go above and beyond to breakdown key teaching points of drills which make learning easier.

Here is a great example of breaking down a drill. The Rope Throw in real-time is kind of hard to see and learn. We break it down piece by piece with enhanced computer graphics to make learning the move easier.

STATIONARY DRIBBLING

Jason outlines the 6 reasons to dribble as a point guard.  The first drills on Volume 1 are stationary.  Jason wants explosive dribbles while maintaing balance.  Having great outside the hip handle is vital to being a great point guard and Jason will show you how to handle the ball outside your hip.  These just aren't a bunch of drills to fill time.  Jason shows how these stationary drills are actually used in game situations.

Jason teaches the key concept of "High Ball in Hand Time".  Jason gives you 10 drills that will transfer directly to your movement as an efficient player and the ability to make reads as a point guard.

DEFENSE & LATERAL MOVEMENT

The point guard sets the tone on defense and Jason will cover various ways to make plays on defense.  Learn to take a charge, make a player panic and miss a transition layup, and more. Again, Jason prefaces the drills with the game application of the drill.

Jason will give you some fresh drills to do for defense with your players. Lane slides are good, but the drills on the DVD are more game-like and were created by Jason to address common defensive issues coaches have with players.

RESISTANCE BAND DRIBBLING

Band resistance is useful for learning to "Punch Through the Defender's Hip".  The bands can help you become more explosive and faster. The drills can be done with two players working together or with a coach or trainer.

• Point Guard Philosophy & Mentality
• Cone Sweeps
• Cut Back Dribble vs. Defense
• Triple Threat
• Corner Turns
• Creating Angles to Attack in Straight Lines

with Jason Otter,
Inventor of the Otterbasketball efficiency of movement basketball training system;
Advanced Basketball Trainer widely consulted by the top Division I
and High School coaches in the country today:
Many coaches consider him the best trainer in the market place today;
Trainer of players of all ranges from the NBA to Elite High School players;
Director fo Otterbasketball Training events and camps across the country.

CONE SWEEPS

Cone Sweeps will help you play in straight lines instead of playing at angles. If you can go right at the defender, you are harder to guard because the defender has to make a decision on which way to play you.  Cone Sweeps will teach you to go right at the defender and use your hands to help you punch through the defender.  Using the cones makes you get low and be explosive. In the screenshot above, instead of leaving the key point to your imagination, we take the time to add the visual effect so that you can see exactly what Jason is explaining.

Using cones has become popular with many trainers and coaches, but one thing Jason points out that is many people use them incorrectly by allowing players to hunch over and have bad posture.  Jason emphasizes keeping your back straight so you are efficient in your moves and using training tools correctly.  .

Which is better?  The Crossover or Between the Legs?  Jason breaks down each move to see which one covers more ground and when to choose which one to use.

Jason shows the game application of each dribble move so you know why you are practicing the moves.  It's not just a bunch of drills to fill time.

CUT BACK DRIBBLE

The defense wants you to play in angles.  As an offensive player you want to play in straight lines.  Jason will teach you how to have your players make a straight line cut back dribble after they have been cutoff. Don't let the defense win!

TRIPLE THREAT

Jason will teach you how to shoot on balance as well as get shots against bigger players.  Jason gives you multiple footwork drills to work on shooting the ball on balance.

Here is another visual effect that breaks down the drill so you can see the components of it. Most of the drills feature some review with visual effects to make learning easier.

CORNER TURNS

A very important skill for point guards is to be able to turn corners.  Being able to turn corners off the dribble will help you beat players off the dribble and best utilize ball screens.  You must be able to handle the ball low to the ground and keep your balance.

ANGLES TO STRAIGHT LINES

Penetrating in straight lines put the defense at a big disadvantage as  help defense can't come across but has to come up, which leads to easy dishes and kick outs.

READ SPOTS

Included are drills that you can do by yourself in the gym to work on using angles to straight lines.

TRANSITION DRIBBLING

Think you can handle 42s?  42s are 42 full speed sprints with the basketball that Jason used to play at the highest levels of basketball.  Great point guards can put pressure on defenses by pushing the ball up the floor fast.  Pushing the basketball fast also creates great shots for teammates.  How many people do you know who will get in the gym every day and do 42 sprints with a basketball?  You'll get in tremendous shape and greatly improve your transition handling of the basketball.

Jason features 7 different moves in 42s.  You'll do a set of 6 sprints and then shoot free throws.  Practice your free throws when you are tired.  Jason breaks down each move so you know how to do it and also the when and why you would use each dribble in a game situation.

POINT GUARD FINISHING MOVES

Jason teaches you the essential 9 finishes every point guard should be able to do.  Point guards must be able to put pressure on the defense AND be able to finish the play.  The two types of finishes Jason covers are Speed and Power finishes.  If you are going to be a great finisher as a point guard, you must be able to finish over players who are much bigger than you and Jason will give you various ways to do just that.

Jason breaks down each Finishing Move and will tell you not only how to do it, but why you do it and when.

Each Finishing Move is recapped with the key points so you can see each move broken down into pieces which makes learning each move that much easier.

You'll learn how to use your body and the rim to finish.  Jason will even teach you the angles of various shots and where the basketball should be shot from. The screenshot above uses Stop Motion technology to stop the action at each key point which easily lets you learn the moves.

OPERATION ZONES

Operation Zones are all about running your half court offense vs. tough defensive pressure.  Jason will put you in position to see the floor, get the ball to where it needs to be, all while remaining calm and collected.

Learn the most effective way to enter the ball to the wing.  Become a master at running and directing your team's offense.

The Point Guard Elite series is for players and coaches. Whether you want to become a great point guard or you want to coach great point guards, you must get this series.

HANDLING PRESSURE SITUATIONS

You can't run from pressure, you must attack it. Jason will show you the Box drills that will teach you to take contact and still get to the basket.  Don't let the defensive player dictate what you do, you need to dictate what the defense does.

Most players would crumble under pressure like you see above. Jason will give you drills to handle and dominate even the most aggressive defenders.

FULL COURT DEFENSE

Jason will show you how to handle ball handlers that are faster and quicker than you.  Learn to make the ball handler play in angles instead of straight lines and slow down even the quickest and best guards.

GETTING OPEN OFF THE BALL

As a point guard you must be a great shooter, and there will be times you will need to get open to get a shot or even just get the ball back. Jason will show you how to get open when you don't have the ball in your hands. There are so many tips Jason will give you over the course of this video, you will watch it again and again.  We suggest you take some notes as well.

PASSING

Point guards have to deliver the pass to the right person, and the right place, and the right time. Jason's drills can be done by your self so there is no reason not to work on your passing. You must be able to make quick passes off the dribble and there are plenty of drills here to help you accomplish that.

Great guards make everyone around them better and that is by giving teammates great passes.  These passing drills will help you run the offense, feed the post, run the break, and more. You must be able to pass equally well with either hand as well. Jason demonstrates the drill with incredible proficiency with both hands. Yes, it can be done.

BALL SCREENS

Point Guards often come off ball screens. Jason will teach you the fundamentals and reads of the ball screen. Once you learn these, you can become very tough to guard off the ball screen.

We take the time to make great videos. Here you can see the two defensive players highlighted as Jason makes a key point. With HoopsKing there is no misundertanding on the DVDs. We know how to break it down. Also included are shooting drills to develop your shooting touch off the ball screen.

HANDLING DOUBLE TEAMS

As a point guard, you will be double teamed at some point. Jason talk about which types of passes to use, your body position, and which defender in the double team you should attack.

When the full court double teams come, many players "Freak Out". Jason will show you how to handle the full court double team off the dribble. What do you do if you don't have a teammate who comes back to help you out or doesn't give you a good passing angle? Jason covers that too.

FEEDING THE POST

Jason will show you how to make various post entries. The passing drills from the previous chapter are going to be key here. There is more to feeding the post than just lobbing the ball into the post. Jason teaches you how to read the defender's hands and what pass you should make accordingly. What do you do after feeding the post? Jason covers that too.

USING SCREENS

It's still important even as a point guard to be able to come off screens. Jason covers 4 different screens with all the reads, body position, and savvy you need to get open.

FASTBREAK

Jason will cover the common mistakes of running the fastbreak. He'll teach you the correct reads and passes to make in any situation. Put yourself in position to make the game easy.

Basketball Coaching DVDs:
' Aztec Basketball Academy Elite Training '
NEW Basketball DVD on February 28th, 2014 ~ 2-Pack DVD ~ 57 minutes

with Myron Epps, Mission Oak (CA) High School Head Coach and head trainer of Aztec Academy;
AAU Director for Central California;
four-year player at San Diego St. University,
one of two past Aztecs to lead his team in field goal percentage three consecutive years,
All State and California North vs South All Star MVP his senior year in high school,
named USA Today's All American Honorable Mention in high school

Basketball Coaching ~ Myron Epps: Aztec... by eBAsketball

... Aztec Basketball Academy Elite Training ...

Aztec Basketball Academy Elite Training - Workout 1

As Central California's Top Basketball Trainer, Myron Epps has developed several male and female athletes that are currently at the Division 1, 2, NAIA and junior college levels. Coach Epps uses on court demonstrators along with his staff to detail a workout that challenges your player's and push them out of their comfort zone.

During his first workout session, you get a complete ball handling and agility workout. Starting with two ball dribbling drills, Coach Epps takes you through drills where your players will strengthen their weak hand while maintaining and pushing your dominate ball handler to learn new moves.

Whether it's the popcorn move, dribbles with cross overs or high lows the skills taught get more and more challenging. Epps demonstrates how you players will learn to control their movements and execute the perfect move to beat their defender and get to the rim.

After your players have warmed up with two ball dribbling and stationary dribbling, Coach Epps pushes your players through his ball handling training circuits. Epps uses agility ladders, shuttle cones and 18-inch cones to create three training circuits for athletes of all ages! During these drills he emphasizes the importance of staying low and keeping your head up.

The drill gets moving down the court as each player uses a ball handling move as they attack a set of cones. By imagining defenders and playing at a high pace this set of drills simulates real game situations. A tennis ball is added to work out to provide even more variety. The workout ends with his Elite Circuit.

In this set of drills the players work through a speed ladder and build up their quickness as they also handle the ball. While performing foot ladder drills and dribbling with a basketball allows the athlete to mentally multi-task and prep for challenging situations in games in which their ball handling and footwork must be sharp enough to beat a trap all while looking up court.

This variety within one drill keeps the players attention and also continually challenges them. It is the perfect way to build on the skills developed earlier in the workout.

Throughout the workouts the players are challenged both mentally and physically as they build on crucial skills to help them become better ball players.

Being able to take foot quickness and ball handling, and implement it into eye hand coordination goes a long long way on the court each season. Myron Epps of the Aztec Basketball Academy takes those important skills and adds multiple ball skills to his foot quickness drills in order to maximize his players' ability to control the ball in various situations. Turnovers play a huge role in the outcome of a game in addition to the ability to lead and control an offense. These ball handling agility workouts will help build that body control, while building ball skills needed.

Aztec Basketball Academy Elite Training - Workout 2

Any basketball player must be able to shoot and take their man off the dribble. Myron Epps uses this training session to do just that: focus on shooting and moves to beat your defender.

Coach Epps uses cones to simulate defenders as he incorporates various moves such as jab step. He puts a big emphasis on ripping the ball through to attack the basket. Starting with medicine ball rip-throughs, the players are forced to stay low and work on the first attack step. This move is crucial to clearing space early in the attack to improve their scoring opportunities.

Form shooting is also covered early in the workout as Coach Epps emphasizes good fundamentals. Next using a set of cone the players put the shot and the attack together as they grab a ball off the cone and rip through to a shot.

By teaching moves such as behind the back, crossover, between the legs, and combo moves, Coach Epps demonstrates how to effectively move with a purpose in the open court and attacking the basket. Your player's will learn to gain an offensive advantage and finish strong around the rim.

Coach Epps uses various moves to incorporate into his transition drill, full court dribbling drill, finishing drill, and attacking from the wing to train your player's on how to become scoring threats every time they touch the ball.

This is a must have DVD for the coach that is looking to improve their player's ability to score and attack the rim. Your player's will break down any defender your conference has to offer.

Basketball Coaching ~ Disadvantage Drills for... by eBAsketball

... Frank Allocco: Disadvantage Drills for Building Your Team ...

• Develop players who think quicker, make better decisions and exhibit greater confidence
    and composure under pressure
 • Learn how to turn defensive pressure into offensive advantage
 • Discover 12 "disadvantage drills" that will improve players' decision-making skills
and give them confidence to be successful against adversity

Learn how to teach players to make better decisions in disadvantage situations using drills created by one of the country's top high school coaches. Legendary California high school coach Frank Allocco shares practice secrets like disadvantage drills that will help your team crush opponents. These drills prepare players by putting them in practice situations that are tougher than anything they'll encounter in a game.

Playing in an outnumbered situation creates athletes that think quicker, make better decisions and exhibit greater confidence and composure. Whether it's a 5-on-4 situation that works correct positioning on defense or 1-on-1 with a trailer drill that forces your ball handler to get to the rim quick, these drills will help athletes handle tough moments on the court.

Here are some of the key features of the DVD:

• Disadvantage drills to help young athletes play better and become better decision makers under pressure
• Strategies to teach players how to get rid of the ball before they get double-teamed and trapped
• Techniques to help players draw the defense to them and create open shots for their teammates
• Suggestions for teaching players to get open without the ball
• Techniques that show players how to attack, turning defensive pressure into an offensive advantage
• Strategies to teach players to welcome the thought that everything is against them

Frank Allocco is coach of the state champion De La Salle boys basketball team in Concord, CA. A former Notre Dame football player, he routinely turns a bunch of less-than-superstar talent into the smoothest-running, most efficient team around. In this photograph from Devils in Durham presented by #eBAStatsGroup #BasketballStatistics Analysis .
Photograph: SFGgate

Using on-court demonstrations, Coach Allocco shows how to use basic drills in a disadvantage situation. His dribble drills teach ball handlers to create space and attack when given the chance. With the offensive disadvantage drills, players learn how to handle a double team and how to be strong with the ball. The defensive disadvantage set covers key points like competition and communication. Fast-break drills are also used to prepare players for game-day scenarios. Finally, in the full-court disadvantage drills, players get to run up and down the court using many of the concepts covered in earlier sections.

One of the highlight drills in this presentation is a 2-on-1 build up to 5-on-5 and then back down to 2-on-1. This unique approach to a popular drill forces athletes to communicate as they slowly take players off the court. Also, by having nine possessions in one drill, fatigue begins to affect the players and their focus must increase.

By using these disadvantage drills, players will feel more confident facing any opponent. This is a must-have DVD for any coach looking to take their players to the next level of competition.

NEW DVD on JANUARY 1st, 2014 ~ 122 minutes
with Jerry Petitgoue,
Cuba City HS (WI) Head Boys Basketball Coach.
Over 45 years of varsity head coaching experience.
- Currently in his 47th season as a head varsity basketball coach, the last 40 in Cuba City
- Over 840 Varsity Wins - the most in state history
- Led the Cubans to state championships in 1981, 1991 and 1998
- Selected as the Coach of the Century by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
- Leads the WBCA as Executive Director, a post he has held since 1985
- Proudly served 48 years as a teacher
- Author of 18 basketball videos
- Feature in "A Driving Passion" a book about basketball in the Tri-State area by Jim Swenson

A good practice always includes the fundamentals of the game. In this on-court video, Jerry Petitgoue runs his players through a typical practice complete with a wealth of great drills and information on how to run a practice at the start of the season. See how coach keeps his kids going with positive comments while still holding them accountable for doing things right. Learn his continuity pick and roll offense and get a great look at Cuba City's version of the 1-3-1 Zone Defense.

Coach starts his practice off with a simple yet essential drill. Shot Builder is a fundamentally sound drill that focuses on shooting the ball with good form. Coach then runs the players through multiple press breakers to run against man-to-man and zone full court pressure. Whether its late game situations or teams that go all out for four quarters, having these pressure releases in your toolbox as a coach will help your players stay calm under pressure.

Use fundamental drills throughout your practices to make sure your players continually do things the right way. Coach Petitigoue requires all of his players go through a set of fundamental ball handling drills. He begins this session with some stationary work and then gets into full court transition drills. Rebounding is another key to victory in basketball. Coach presents two great drills that cover the fundamentals needed to be a great rebounder: hand eye coordination, being physical and meeting the ball at the highest point. All the drills are challenging and game like.

Petitgoue has won more games than any coach in Wisconsin basketball history, and has influenced the game as the executive director of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association. Petitigoue is in his 44th year as a coach, and on Thursday night against Milwaukee Academy of Science, he'll coach his 1,000th career game. In this photograph presented by #eBAStatsGroup #BasketballStatistics Analysis .

A highlight of this practice is the work Coach Petitigoue does with his version of the Continuity Pick and Roll Offense - A simple offense that is flexible enough with different entries and adjustments to be successful at all levels. In a short time he easily explains the ins and outs of this effective attack. He breaks down the posts responsibilities with setting screens, and shows variations for dealing with different strategies against the pick and roll and he gives some unique adjustments that will confuse opponents.

Another key part of Cuba City's success has been the 1-3-1 defense. The is an odd-front zone defense that can easily tailor it's pressure in a variety of ways. By perfecting the pieces the team has been able to control the game from the defensive end of the floor. Coach Petitgoue shows where the defense is must vulnerable and when a team may need to come out of this defense. Coach provides fundamental drills that can build a successful defense, no matter what system you run. Closing out with high-hands, staying in your stance and moving while the ball is in the air are all key concepts that Coach teaches. You'll also see Petitgoue's version of the shell drill that can be used to teach team defensive concepts regarding ball screens and defending cutters.

This unique insight into one of America's premier high school programs is a one of a kind DVD. This is a great video to watch if you want to see what a quality practice looks like.

As part of his middle school offensive package, Nick Cammarano provides you with another great offense for your program: Box Offense. Coach Cammarono's version of the box offense gives isolations, quality post-up opportunities, pick and rolls, and numerous screens. His strategies create the perfect offensive system for a middle school team with multiple players that can score anywhere on the court.

Each segment of the box offense is designed to build an unstoppable scoring machine. To fully illustrate his strategies, Coach Cammarano uses on-court demonstrations in the 5-on-5 setting and 5-on-0 setting along with whiteboard diagrams.

He breaks down each layer of the box offense into easy drills that can be used in daily practice. By utilizing the point guard and post players, your team will develop the skills needed to be successful at running the box offense. You'll learn different looks within the box offense so your opponents won't know how to guard your best players.

Coach Cammarano demonstrates 10 different sets and wrinkles that can be used to teach the basic box set up. Each set play is designed to create a scoring opportunity. If your post player is your strongest offensive man, multiple options that include screens and isolations will get him the ball. If your guards are your more skilled players, screen and roll situations are set up to let them be more aggressive towards the hoop. Players will love to run the box offense as everyone has a scoring opportunity.

Designed especially for middle school players, the concepts are easily understood and implemented. Every possible game situation is addressed. Coach Cammarano continually stresses getting his best players the ball in good scoring spots. The box offense makes this happens.

Begin your season with a solid, teachable offense that will help your team have success when they have the ball.

The goal of any defense is to limit opponents from scoring easy, high percentage baskets. As part of his middle school basketball series, Nick Cammarano turns to the defensive end of the floor and demonstrates his stifling 3-2 match-up zone defense. Using whiteboard diagrams to draw out drills, movements and responsibilities of the 3-2 match-up zone, along with on-court demonstrations to illustrate the system, Cammarano covers every situation your defense will face.

If you're looking for a defense that creates confusion and forces opponents to take bad shots out of the corner of the zone then look no further than the 3-2 match-up zone. Coach Cammarano begins by explaining how the zone should move along with coverage areas for each player. Building from the initial set-up, he demonstrates five breakdown drills that can be used to teach different aspects of the zone such as defending screens or a high post flasher.

Teach players how to defend five different offensive set-ups against the 3-2 match-up zone including the traditional 2-1-2 zone. As guards fly around creating illusions of no-driving angles on the floor, post players will learn to bait shooters into bad shots from the corner of the court. Opponents will be forced to take one of the worst shots on the court.

If you're looking for an aggressive defense, Coach Cammarano demonstrates how to use the 3-2 match-up zone as a trapping defense that creates turnovers, throws opponents out of rhythm, and creates havoc on the defensive end. He also demonstrates how to shift the zone to defend baseline out-of-bounds situations, use two different alignments, Diamond and 1, and how to tilt the zone and defend any offensive situation you might come across during the season.

This is a must-have DVD for any level of coach that is looking for a zone defense. After many years of successfully coaching at the middle school level, Coach Cammarano has developed a unbeatable way to win with the 3/2 match-up zone defense that forces your opponents taking bad shots.

Quality Basketball Instruction (QBI) Basketball Camps

It's essential to score easy baskets when they're presented. In today's game, it's also important to get eight-to-10 points on out-of-bounds situations in order to gain an offensive edge. As part of a four-part DVD series, Nick Cammarano demonstrates eight out-of-bounds plays that will allow your team to take advantage of set situations. These are great sets that can be used against man or zone defense to gain an offensive advantage.

Coach Cammarano begins by introducing a set of drills that support all inbound actions. The first two drills (Follow the Leader and Rapid Fire Shooting) emphasize and imitate the shots needed in the game from inbound plays. Each drill requires numerous reps and forces players to focus on the fundamentals of shooting. In the 2-in-Traffic drill, post players compete to gather in offensive rebounds and put them back. This action is essential in the game of basketball, but even more prevalent with inbound plays. Defenses are usually scrambling; getting good position under the basket is quite easy if the offensive post players are looking for it.

Next in this instructional DVD, are two basic out-of-bounds set-ups that use a "stack" and "box" alignment. By keeping the alignments simple, players need to learn complex sets or numerous set plays, which can cause confusion and a breakdown in play. Coach Cammarano's eight out-of-bounds sets are easy to remember and teach to any middle school player. Your opponents won't know which play you are running next as you use the same actions to create scoring opportunities.

In order to be successful with out-of-bounds plays, a team must move quick, know their reads and, as much as possible, get the ball to the best scorers. With the plays on this DVD, these things can happen. If you're looking for easy sets to teach in your middle school program, then look no further than Coach Cammarano's eight out-of-bounds plays. They're sure to give you quick movements that allow players to effectively score anywhere on the court.

The zone defense is a tool that lower-level basketball teams like to use to offset their players' ability and understanding of the game. With great movement and multiple scoring options, the Wheel Offense gives players good shots all over the court. Nick Cammarano has been coaching at the middle school level for the past 15 years and has become an expert at teaching and implementing offense at this level. In this DVD, he shows the ins and outs of the Wheel Offense that he has used for years when facing zone defenses.

Coach Cammarano uses on-court demonstrations and whiteboard diagrams to provide detailed instruction on how to effectively run, install, and teach the Wheel Offense. He starts with the basic set-up and philosophy on why the wheel offense is so successful against zone defenses. As he explains, your post players will get involved and create scoring opportunities for your guards as they look to dribble penetrate gaps in the zone. Coach Cammanaro demonstrates how spacing within the wheel offense is the most important thing you can teach your players.

Coach Cammanaro progressively builds the wheel offense with a variety of breakdown drills. From the give-and-go, cut-to-swing, and shoot-to-penetrate and shoot, your players will learn how to cut, fill, and attack in the wheel offense. You'll learn the ins and outs to the wheel offense as Coach Cammanaro demonstrates how to apply cuts used during drills into game-like situations. He uses 5-on-5 settings to demonstrate where gaps and driving angles will be. Players will pass right around any defense with these instructions.

Any coach knows that you must have counter calls to keep the defense on their toes. Coach Cammanaro gives you three sets that can be run against a zone defense for a quick-scoring opportunity. If the offense starts to get stagnant, then looking to post players for scoring opportunities or overloading the zone are just a few of the options that can be used against any zone defense.

If you're looking for an offense to attack zone defenses, no matter of the age group, the wheel offense delivers an effective system that is simple to learn but with enough options to be unpredictable.

A painful part of being a coach - a part that many coaches hate - is preseason tryouts. This is especially true when it becomes clear that cuts are in order to get the team to a manageable number of players. The best way to make these tryouts easier for the players, coaches and parents alike is to have structured, well-planned practices for tryouts.

Middle School Coach Nick Cammarano explains how you can structure a tryout and shares the secrets to developing a successful tryout system that everyone can feel good about participating in. Whether it's demonstrating drills or teaching you what to look for during a tryout session, Coach Cammarano will make sure you are in a position to choose the best team possible.

Cammarano provides an essential list of items that need to be addressed before any tryout. Things like announcing the tryout, ensuring players get their physicals, player and parent meetings and more.

On the court, you will see a series of drills that will help you make confident decisions when you select your team and that can help you distinguish between players who appear to be similar in comparison. Cammarano diagrams every drill that he uses so you are fully prepared to teach your players how to properly execute the drill.

Just as important as the drills themselves, Coach Cammarano provides insights into which skills and traits to look for in your players and why. He runs his "hopefuls" through dribbling, passing, and a variety of shooting drills to evaluate their complete skill set. He uses uses a 3-on-2 / 2-on-1 drill, free throws, suicides and 3-on-3 play to measure player assertiveness and to discover the "athletes" in the tryout. You'll also learn three qualities you can use to assess potential guards and forwards for the team.

Without having a plan, a tryout can be hectic. Effectively organizing your tryouts will save you time and frustration, ensure each player gets an opportunity to showcase their skills, and allow you to build a balanced team that includes all the basketball skills you need to be successful.

Perhaps the most important thing you can do for a young basketball player is to help them develop their individual skills. The ability to shoot, pass and dribble is what makes basketball fun for young players.

In this DVD, you will see a series of offensive skills and drills that will build a foundation for success for your young players. The DVD includes instruction in four skill areas:

• Ball Handling - Incorporate ball handling drills that progress from stationary to moving and from one-ball to two-ball drills. These drills develop the necessary ball handling skills with both hands and help players develop ball control regardless of position.

• Passing - These drills teach the correct fundamentals for both throwing and catching a variety of passes. Players work together on passing into different finishes such as lay ups or shooting. Incorporating these into offensive breakdown drills shows when, how, and why to make the pass in a game.

• Agility - This agility series incorporates reaction and quickness drills with a basketball to create a quicker basketball player on the offensive and defensive ends of the court.

Basketball Fundamentals and Basketball Youth Training • Fundamentos del Baloncesto y Entrenamiento Juvenil

...a New Week ...a New Basketball eBook eBA DVICE !

Coaching Youth Basketball - 5th Edition
by American Sport Education Program
and Don Showalter

This new edition shows coaches how to prepare for games, teach skills, correct mistakes, encourage players and provide a safe playing environment.

Incorporating a player-centric model which places greater emphasis on the development of players than on coaches: preparing for and conducting efficient, age-specific practices and providing a safe playing environment
This book also offers key communication and teaching concepts and hands-on advice to assist coaches in all phases of player development including individual skills, team tactics and understanding and enjoyment of the game.

It features more skills and and includes many new photographs and diagrams to facilitate coaches’ understanding of the game-like drills. It also offers dynamic and effective learning tools for players to hone their skills and deepen their understanding of the game.

Coaching Youth Basketball equips coaches to provide a rewarding season for players as they continue to develop their skills and most importantly experience fun through this development.

Game Time, Lineup and Substitutions

Excerpts from Coaching Youth Basketball, Fifth Edition

“... Although you won’t need to create a complex game strategy, as mentioned before, you will need to make tactical decisions in several areas throughout a game. You’ll make decisions about who starts the game and when to enter substitutes, about making slight adjustments to your team’s tactics, and about dealing with players’ performance errors.

When considering playing time, make sure that everyone on the team gets to play at least half of each game. This should be your guiding principle as you consider starting and substitution patterns. It is also nice if each player has a chance to start one game during your season. Realize that some players may play better in a starting role than when coming off the bench. We suggest you consider two options in substituting players:

1. Substituting individually. Replace one player with another. This offers you a lot of latitude in deciding who goes in when, and it gives you the greatest combination of players throughout the game. Keeping track of playing time can be difficult, but this task could be made easier by assigning it to an assistant or a parent.

You may want to try substituting players by time left in the quarter, especially when working with younger age groups. For example, you can let a substitute know that she will play the last four minutes of each quarter, or that she will replace a player at the six-minute mark of the quarter. This will let the player know when she can expect to get into the game and will help the player be more prepared for her playing time.

In addition, if a player plays so hard that she asks to be taken out of a game, you should allow her to go back in when she is ready. This will let your players know that they can play hard without worrying that another individual will sub in for them and they will not get back in the game.

2. Substituting by quarters. The advantage of substituting players after each quarter is that you can easily track playing time, and players know how long they will be in before they might be replaced. When substituting by quarters, you should still keep track of the actual number of minutes that each player is on the court. ...”

Time-Outs and Intermissions

"... At the younger age levels (5 and 6, 7 and 8, or 9 and 10), you probably won’t adjust your team tactics, or plays, too significantly during a game. Rather, you’ll focus on the basic tactics, and during breaks in the game, you’ll emphasize the specific tactics your team needs to work on. However, coaches of 11- to 14-year-olds might have reason to make tactical adjustments to improve their team’s chances of performing well and winning. As games progress, assess your opponents’ style of play and tactics, and make adjustments that are appropriate—that is, those that your players are prepared for. You may want to consider the following examples when adjusting team tactics:

• How does your opponent usually initiate their attack? Do they aim to get around, over, or through your defense? This can help you make defensive adjustments.

• Who are the strongest players on the opposing team? The weakest players? As you identify strong players, you’ll want to assign more skilled players to defend them.

• Are the opponent’s forwards fast and powerful? Do they come to the ball, or do they try to run behind the defense and receive passes? Their mode of attack should influence how you instruct your players to defend them.

• On defense, does your opponent play a high-pressure game, or do they retreat once you’ve gained possession of the ball? Either type of defense could call for a different strategy from you.

• Ask your players, “What does the player you are guarding do well?” Then ask, “Do you think you can stop the player from doing that?” This will help players adjust their game to what the opponent does best.

Knowing the answers to such questions can help you formulate an effective game plan and make proper adjustments during a game. However, don’t stress tactics too much during a game. Doing so can take the fun out of the game for the players. If you don’t trust your memory, carry a pen and pad to note which team tactics and individual skills need attention at the next practice. This is also a good job for your assistant. ..."

Interaction With Opposing Coaches and Officials

"... You must respect the opponents and officials you encounter in your competitions. Without them, there wouldn’t be a competition. Opponents provide opportunities for your team to test itself, improve, and excel. Officials help provide a fair and safe experience for players and, as appropriate, help them learn the rules of the game.

You and your team should show respect for opponents and officials by giving your best efforts and being civil. Don’t allow your players to “trash talk” or taunt an opponent or an official. Such behavior is disrespectful to the spirit of the competition, and you should immediately remove a player from a game if that player disobeys your team rules in this area.

Remember, too, that officials at this level are quite often teenagers—in many cases not much older than the players themselves—and the level of officiating should be commensurate to the level of play. In other words, don’t expect perfection from officials any more than you do from your own players. Especially at younger levels, the officials won’t make every call, because to do so would stop the game too frequently. You may find that officials at younger levels only call the most flagrant violations—those directly affecting the outcome of the game. As long as the calls are being made consistently on both sides and the violations are being addressed, most of your officiating concerns will be alleviated.

If you yell at or disagree with the officials constantly, you are giving your team an excuse for not playing well or losing the game. Don’t give your players an excuse for losing or playing poorly by blaming the officials. ..."

Pistol Pete's

Four DVD Series
with Peter "Pistol Pete" Maravich

Peter Maravich (June 22, 1947 – January 5, 1988) was an American basketball player known for his dazzling ballhandling, incredible shooting abilities, and creative passing. He learned at a very young age fundamental basketball and ball handling drills from his father, coach Press Maravich.

He would follow his father and coach throughout the eastern and gulf seaboards as a young man before exploding onto the National Basketball Association (NBA) in his own right.

Nicknamed "Pistol Pete", Maravich starred in college at Louisiana State University (LSU) and for three NBA teams.

Maravich is still the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer, averaging a staggering 44.2 points per game, without the benefit of a three-point line and despite the fact that when Pete was in his first year of college, the NCAA had separate freshmen and varsity basketball teams and freshmen were not allowed to play on the varsity team.

Years later former LSU head basketball coach Dale Brown charted every college game Maravich played, taking into consideration all shots Pete took. The coach calculated that at the NCAA rule of a three-point line at 19-foot, 9-inches from the rim, Maravich would have averaged thirteen 3-point scores per game, which would have given the player a career average of 57 points per game.

Pistol Pete was an incredible player with extraordinary skills. Many believed he was years ahead of the game - and many of greatest NBA players mention Pistol Pete as one of their idols while they were growing up. That says a lot about his impact on the game.

He is the NCAA all-time leading scorer, NBA All-Star, and the youngest Hall of Fame inductee. He was blessed with great athletic ability, but more importantly he had the drive and determination needed to become one of the best ever!

Pistol Pete Maravich ... the name still rings in the ears of basketball fans across America. College basketball's all-time leading scorer ... NBA All-Star ... and finally the youngest professional inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame! Now from Pistol Pete comes the most comprehensive instructional series ever produced. No other series can offer the many-faceted combination of instruction, motivation and one-of-a-kind drills. 1987.

After graduating from LSU in 1970, Maravich was the third selection in the first round of that year's NBA player draft[2] and made league history when he signed a $1.6 million contract — one of the highest salaries at the time — with the Atlanta Hawks. He wasted little time becoming a prime time player by averaging 23.2 points per game his rookie season and being named to the NBA All-Rookie Team. After spending four seasons in Atlanta, Maravich was traded to the New Orleans Jazz for 8 players, where he peaked as an NBA showman and superstar. He made the All-NBA First Team in 1976 and 1977 and the All-NBA Second Team in 1973 and 1978. He led the NBA in scoring in the 1976-77 with 31.1 points per game.

In ten NBA seasons, Maravich, a five time NBA All-Star, scored 15,948 points in 658 games for a 24.2 points per game average (16th All Time). His NBA single game high, a 68-point explosion before fouling out, came against the New York Knicks on February 25, 1977.

"... Those who have not known Joanne P. McCallie long may wonder why her players and those who know her well call her “Coach P.” The “P” stands for Palombo, her maiden name. McCallie is proud of her Italian heritage, and early in her career found many similarities between herself and coaching legend Jim Valvano. She reasoned that if there could be a “Jimmy V”, why not a “Joanne P?” Therefore, during her years as Joanne Palombo, she became known as “Coach P,” and after her marriage to John McCallie, she decided to keep the “P” as a middle initial. But old habits die hard, so players, coaches, staff members and friends continue to refer to her simply as “Coach P.” ..."

High School Basketball 4-Pack
By Bob Hurley

Robert Matthew "Bob" Hurley, Sr. (born July 3, 1947) is the basketball coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Hurley has amassed 23 state championships and more than 900 wins in 35 years as a coach, creating a national powerhouse despite substandard facilities and financial limitations.

Five of his teams have gone undefeated, including his 2007-08 team. On April 5, 2010, he was announced as the only coach to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame that year and only the third high-school coach in history to be so honored; he was formally inducted on August 13 of that year.

Hurley is the father of Bobby Hurley, a former All-American point guard at Duke, and Dan Hurley, who was hired in April 2010 to coach Wagner College after years of coaching at Newark's Saint Benedict's Preparatory School, also one of the top high school programs in the nation. Dan has since hired Bobby as an assistant at Wagner.

3x USA Today National Championships (1989, 1996, 2008);
2x National Coach of the Year by USA Today (1989, 1996)
A 2010 inductee to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Hulrey has won 25 state titles, three high school national championships, is a two time national coach of the year, and has over 900 career victories. More than 100 athletes have earned Division I basketball scholarships playing for Hurley, and five have been first-round picks in the NBA Draft.

Legendary coach Bob Hurley presents an on-the-court clinic presentation that details both his highly successful Zone Offense and Motion Offense philosophies with various sets and quick hitters.

Zone Offense Philosophy
Force your opponent to guard you from sideline to sideline. Hurley reveals why it is important to dribble more against zone defense than it is to dribble against man-to-man defense. See how to effectively attack zones from behind to give your team easy lay-ups.

Defeating any Zone Defense
Hurley demonstrates five different offensive sets for attacking any zone defense you may face. He explains how to attack the weak side of a zone to create a simple 2-1 advantage with a ball reversal.

Motion Offense Philosophy
Hurley delivers 10 concepts that make his Motion Offense so successful, including: Fitting motion to your team, "tempo-ing" the game, and moving with a purpose while reading your teammates. He also provides you with an inbounds play he has used for 35 years that is so good he had to run it out of a regular set. Learn audibles and numbered cuts that you can use to keep your offense free-flowing.

Hurley shares two drills he uses to help build your own motion offense. The 11 Pass Drill and the Overplay Drill are based upon the offense making clean passes and using screens to get open as no dribbling is allowed

These are the same offenses that Bob Hurley has used to win three USA Today National Championships. Use Coach Hurley's instruction to add a new wrinkle to your Zone and Motion Offenses.

•  2-on-0 Full Court Warm-up (6 parts)
•  5-3-1 Shooting (includes shooting, ball handling, and individual defense)
•  Curl-Pop-Fade (shooting while reading the defense while coming off a screen)
•  3 Man Shooting (three shot drill off a pick & roll situations)
•  Passing Tag
•  Half Court 3-on-3 (competitive games)
•  Pitino 1-on-1 (conditioning and shooting)
•  Drexel 1-on-1 (individual offense and defense)
•  Dribbling Routine (7 part routine working on a variety of dribbling moves)
•  Steve Nash Shooting Routine (Breaks down the 20-minute workout while adding a couple extra shot moves)
•  Thirty and a half (shooting drill to finish the workout)

Coach Hurley's perimeter player drills emphasize teaching the fundamentals slowly and gradually, building them to game speed. Insert these new ideas, concepts, and drills into your program and start getting more from your perimeter.

About Coach Bob Hurley

Robert Matthew "Bob" Hurley, Sr. (born July 3, 1947) is the basketball coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Hurley has amassed 26 state championships and more than 1000 wins in 39 years as a coach, creating a national powerhouse despite substandard facilities and financial limitations.

On February 2, 2011, Hurley became the 10th coach in high school history to win 1000 games. Five of his teams have gone undefeated, including his 2007-08 team. On April 5, 2010, he was announced as the only coach to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame that year and only the third high-school coach in history to be so honored; he was formally inducted on August 13 of that year.

Hurley is the father of Bobby Hurley, a former All-American point guard at Duke, and Danny Hurley, who was hired in April 2010 to coach Wagner College after years of coaching at Newark's Saint Benedict's Preparatory School, also one of the top high school programs in the nation. Danny has since hired Bobby as an assistant at Wagner.

Bob Hurley Coaching High School Basketball 4-Pack By Bob Hurley

Hurley's undefeated 1989 team, which featured Jerry Walker, Hurley's son Bobby, Terry Dehere, and Rodrick Rhodes, was ranked first in the nation by USA Today. Three of the players on that team — Bobby Hurley, Dehere and Rhodes — were first round draft choices in the NBA draft. That team won New Jersey's first Tournament of Champions and amassed 50 straight victories in a two-year span. It is generally considered one of the best teams in New Jersey history.

Hurley's 2007-08 squad was also undefeated, finishing with 32 wins and no losses and ranked number one in the U.S. even though no starter is taller than 6'6". The '08 team, with six seniors accepting Division I basketball scholarships, also won Hurley's 10th Tournament of Champions, winning its state tournament games by an average of more than 27 points per game. The team also won St. Anthony's 25th state championship, more than any other school in U.S. history.

Hurley was the coach for 23 of those teams and an assistant coach on the other two. His teams are known for their speed, defensive intensity, and precise ball movement. He is known for his intense calls from the sideline to players during stoppages in play.

'Basketball On A Triangle:
A Higher Level of Coaching and Playing by Ronn Wyckoff' ~ Synopsis

Coach Ronn Wyckoff has the most innovative basketball book for youth coaches and players on the market. If the DVD sales from this book are any indicator, "Basketball On A Triangle: A Higher Level Of Coaching and Playing", is going to be a major player in the "how to coach basketball" and "how to play basketball" niches.

He begins by chronicling his own rise from beginning coach to how he became a teaching coach to players and other coaches around the world. Along the way, he discusses changing teaching paradigms to include Zen/Spiritual approaches to many of the problems facing youth sports today. He discusses how to be a supportive parent, making 'right' choices, and what it takes to become a teaching-coach, rather than one who just moves players around like chess pieces.

In the "how to..." section of his book, Coach Ronn walks a coach, player or parent through the beginning game, from explaining the floor markings, to how the game is played, to how to stand and move. The veteran author always keeps it simple, using the plateau method of teaching. He goes from the most basic introduction of skills, overlaying new usages of skills previously taught, until he has reached the more sophisticated position specific offensive and defensive skills necessary to playing the game well.

Teaching-coaches, and players at any level, will find here the appropriate words and directives, along with specific drills, to teach and enhance whatever skill is being covered.

Before the book was released, Coach Ronn produced and released a 4-hour teaching DVD version of all the aspects he teaches in the "how to..." section of his book. The DVD has had tremendous worldwide sales, making this combination of teaching tools unique among youth basketball coaching authors.

With his more than fifty-five years in basketball, first as a player, then as a coach, and later as an international consultant and national team coach in four countries, Coach Ronn brings a rich and varied expertise to his writing. He weaves anecdotes about his own life and coaching experiences in with suggestions on how to take one's game to a higher level-skill wise and spiritually. Everything the author brings forth in his book is straightforward and simple, all the time relating to how to find a higher purpose for our lives and bring it into working with youth.

About Coach Ronn

Basketball On A Triangle: A Higher Level of Coaching and Playing by Ronn Wyckoff

Teaching Basketball in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) 1975

Coach Ronn Wyckoff  started playing organized basketball at age 11 on a playground team in Orlando, Florida. He had his first coaching job at age 19, while in college, on a playground in Fresno, California. The coaching bug had bitten. It would become his passion and life-long vocation.

Since those beginnings, Coach Ronn has spent more than fifty years in basketball, coaching youth basketball up through national teams, and as a player, lecturer, author, court-side commentator, and even refereeing. As an international consultant, his programs have reached hundreds of players and coaches around the world. He coached four national teams and has conducted national player camps. He averaged over 22 ppg, (before the advent of the 3-point line) in his fifteen year playing career. He played for three years in Sweden at the end of his playing career.
