Basketball Coaches take Advantage of Larry Brown's Clinic

Basketball Coaches take Advantage of Clinic
A few local coaches took a page out of Larry Brown's coaching book yesterday, when they took to the basketball courts. The interactive session with the coaches is the first part of a three-day series being staged by the Bahamas Basketball Federation (BBF). A certification clinic is also being staged by the BBF which will award interested coaches, opportunities to obtain certain levels in coaching.
BBF President Lawrence Hepburn, who welcomed Brown to The Bahamas, stated that the interactive session for national team coaches as well as the coaching clinic, will assist in the growth and development of players in the country. Hepburn is also expecting the coaches to have a more positive outlook to methods used in coaching. Brown is said to have coached on the high school, college and professional level. Coaches are expected to complete at least two or three hours everyday in the clinic.
"This is an opportunity to award local coaches their FIBA certification and to further their education in basketball, so we are inviting the coaches of the basketball fraternity to come out and obtain their certification," said Hepburn. "This is very important.. that we have qualified persons who know the proper fundamentals of the game so that they can teach it. Otherwise we are not going to be a strong country who can produce fundamentally strong basketball players. Again, we are working with FIBA Americas, working with our technical director and with the Bahamas Olympic Committee (BOC) to ensure that these clinics are put on so that coaches will have access to information and as a technical directors.
"This is so that they can better themselves. You cannot watch House on television and turn around and say I am a doctor so therefore you cannot watch the NBA and come back and say that I am a coach. You must know the game. The national team coaches will be meeting with him today (Wednesday). We have invited some senior coaches to come out and jam with him. This meeting with the coaches will be a little more in depth. What he will be doing is reviewing some of the tactics and drills of our national team coaches and assisting them in structuring better and stronger practices. This will help them to further their coaching skills."
Last year, The Bahamas competed in four international competitions, three on the men's side and one women's tournament. Of the four events, the country's best finish was fifth at both the Centrobasket Under-17 Championships and the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships for men. The under-16 men's championship team placed seventh at the FIBA Americas and the under-16 women's team finished sixth at the Centrobasket Championships.
Two years ago, The Bahamas' under-18 men finished eighth at the FIBA Americas Championships, and no Bahamian team at those championships ever finished higher than seventh. These statistics, said Hepburn, are alarming and something the administration is looking forward to changing. Hepburn stated that, through a letter, FIBA revealed that coaches who pay attention to their coaching and upgrade their coaching produces better national teams and a better national program. The BBF President said that FIBA was happy to support the program, noting that the basis of the sport is coaching.
Hepburn said: "Our coaching skills and playing level it catches up with us. I foresee us, if not immediately, in the long term correcting some of the coaching and philosophical errors in our coaching system. If you look at coaching, it is a whole different approach to kids and young players than coaching adults. Many of our coaches don't know how to do this and this clinic can assist. I believe if we can correct the mental approach and aspect of the game for some of our coaches we would be in great shape.
"We also need coaches to take the time with their players teaching them how to enjoy the sport instead of screaming negative remarks at them. As the players grow, they would mature to like the game and will have a better understanding of the sport they play."

Get certified: FIBA coaches clinic 'hoops off' Friday
IF you're coaching at the primary, high school, recreational or night league level and you want to get a certification, then you should attend the Bahamas Basketball Federation's FIBA Certification Coaches Clinic Level 1.
The certification course is slated for May 7-8 at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium and will be conducted by renowned American coach Larry Brown (not the NBA coach).
"We're asking all coaches at the primary, junior and high school level to come out and be a part of this level one certification course," said federation secretary general Sean Bastian.
"This will really assist with improving their skills because the latest information in terms of defense, offense, practice schedule and all of the necessary initiatives you need to embrace as a young coach will be provided."
Once the federation has completed the level one certification, Bastian said they intend to stage level two and three certification courses later this year for the more advanced coaches.
"You must take level one, if you don't have it yet," Bastian said.
Federation president Lawrence Hepburn said they are so delighted to be able to offer the coaches clinic because there are so many coaches coaching basketball in the country, but they are not all certified.
"Larry Brown, not the coach in the NBA, is a FIBA coach who has coached extensively in the US. At one time he had the number two ranked programme in the US," Hepburn said.
"He's done a number of FIBA certification courses, so he brings lot of knowledge of the game, but he will also serve as our technical advisor, helping us with the programme that we are doing here so we can improve the game."
Hepburn said it is anticipated that the clinic will serve as a motivation for a lot of the local coaches who may want to get a certification, but were unable to do so because they didn't have one from the FIBA level to participate in.
The clinic is set to begin 6-8pm Friday and continue all day on Saturday between 10am and 4pm at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. There is a registration fee which will cover all of the materials provided, along with refreshments.
