High Intensity Strength Training Series 4-Pack By Michael Bradley
High Intensity Strength Training
Series 4-Pack
By Michael Bradley

"... Bring up the topic of the exercise methodology called High Intensity Training amongst strength coaches and athletes, and you’ll get a wide range of opinions and no shortage of passion. This style of training is controversial in some circles, and the only way to train in others. The merits of HIT have been debated for almost forty years, and to this day discussions of the subject can bring the proponents and opponents of HIT to the point of a blowup.

High Intensity Training starts with effort, truly maxim effort. You’ll find that if you train to a point of maximum effort, there’s a limit to both the amount of sets of an exercise that you can do productively and the total amount of sets you can do in a workout. And if you train very hard -- hard enough to force your body to adapt -- then you’ll find that you’ll have to take more time to recover from that training. It’ll become obvious that you can’t train every day. ..."

High Intensity Strength Training Volume 1:
Theory and Application

•  See the framework for a proven strength
    training system
•  Learn the fundamental theories of high
    intensity strength training
•  Get the most out of your time in the weight room

with Michael Bradley,
Florida State University Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach

Michael Bradley has coached for over twenty years at the highest level of college athletics, training athletes at institutions including Stanford University, the University of Miami, and the United States Military Academy.

In Volume I of this strength training DVD series, Coach Bradley explains the theory of high intensity strength training, a system of training that integrates knowledge from the fields of physiology, biology, and physics to create reproducible results for all athletes. He also teaches the applications of the theory in the way he trains the Florida State basketball team.

Bradley's goal is getting results from strength training. Strength is not a skill, but working hard and developing strength is. The work ethic shown in his strength program correlates with the hard work players put in on the court to improve their game. The major point of emphasis is learning to train at the right intensity level.

If players are not training intensely enough they will not produce the best results from their training. Bradley is able to maximize their effort and greatly improve their strength in shorter workouts by demanding intense effort and focus from his players.

By constantly tracking progress and focusing on the perfect repetition, athletes are able to show strength increases workout to workout. Bradley explains how to get the absolute most out of your players using high intensity strength training techniques.

If you need a foundation for your strength and conditioning program or simply just need to perfect the structure, this DVD will teach you the philosophical framework of an extremely successful Division I program.

High Intensity Strength Training Volume 2:
Exercise Protocols and Techniques

•  Learn techniques to increase the intensity
    and effectiveness of exercise
•  Master the finer coaching points of
    advance high intensity training techniques
•  Includes special consideration for the knee
    and knee tendonitis

with Michael Bradley,
Florida State University Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach

Strength training and conditioning are an integral part of a great basketball team. By developing strength and muscle off the court, players can maximize their performance and reduce their risk of injury on the court.

In this basketball DVD, Michael Bradley takes you into the weight room to see the methods used in his high intensity strength training program. He walks you through the techniques and terminology of the proper ways to teach these protocols while presenting enumerable coaching points on extracting effort, coaching repetitions, equipment setup, use and design. This DVD addresses three distinct topics.

Pre-Exhaust
In the first segment, Coach Bradley explains a powerful training technique called Pre-Exhaust. This protocol trains around the weak link of an exercise in order to train the targeted muscles more intensely. By pre-fatiguing certain muscles, it creates a greater training intensity on less used muscles in compound joint exercise. This is such a powerful tool that Bradley says it is used in 30-40% of their routines.

Protocols
This segment focuses on advanced protocols that can be used to create intensity and variety in your routines. Topics addressed are cadence lifting and super slow or low momentum training, to both increase intensity and reduce force levels. These high tension, controlled repetitions are a great technique to train athletes who are coming off of injuries to get them stronger without rushing them back too quickly. He also demonstrates the even more powerful negative only training and several of its variations, but he advises that only coaches who are very experienced and trained use these techniques in large measures.

Knee Tendonitis
In the third segment he focuses on the knee, one of the most important joints to a basketball player. By working to strengthen the joint as well as the quadriceps, a player has a greater range of motion and a reduced likelihood of severe knee injury. He also addresses tendonitis, a common injury in basketball players. Coach Bradley teaches several protocols to strengthen the knee and muscles in this inflamed condition while minimizing the pain of the injury.

High Intensity Strength Training Volume 3:
Organization and Implementation

•  Implement your high intensity strength
    training program
•  Track recording and progression to ensure
    accountability and results
•  Organize routines and schedules to be
    as efficient as possible

with Michael Bradley,
Florida State University Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach

In this DVD, Coach Bradley builds upon the philosophical details of high intensity strength training presented in Volume 1 and the training protocols presented in Volume 2 to present ideas and the "nuts and bolts" of how to implement a successful strength and condition program.

Supervision and motivation are the biggest factors in the success of a training program. Florida State basketball players are coached on every repetition of each exercise. In addition, Coach Bradley teaches the athletes the art of strength coaching and the science of strength training, so that they can further grasp expectations and apply it later in life.

It is the responsibility of the strength coach to create an environment that makes the players want to train. An effective coach addresses the mental component of strength training by having players in a positive state of mind as soon as they step in the weight room.

The driving factor behind all training at Florida State basketball is the tracking and recording of progression. This close monitoring ensures that the players are getting stronger each day. It also minimizes overtraining, allowing the players to adapt and grow stronger while preventing injuries and avoiding unnecessary extra fatigue.

Progression is not the only topic discussed in this video. Coach Bradley gives in depth analysis of the following topics:

•  Intensity
•  Effort
•  Technique
•  Program Organization
•  Equipment
•  The Art of Strength Coaching

For any team needing a stellar set up for their strength training program this DVD is guaranteed to give you the foundation necessary for success.

Michael Bradley: High Intensity Strength Training Volume 4: Metabolic Conditioning and Manual Resistance Training
High Intensity Strength Training Volume 4:
Metabolic Conditioning
 and Manual Resistance Training

•  The power technique of manual resistance training
•  Metabolic conditioning, one of the
    most unique training methods available
•  Special considerations for the ankle and lower leg

with Michael Bradley,
Florida State University Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach

If your team does not have a weight room or sufficient workout equipment, or if you are looking for an advanced training method to increase the intensity of your workouts, this DVD is perfect for you.

Florida State Strength and Conditioning Coach Michael Bradley demonstrates his successful manual resistance program, which greatly enhances your strength and requires very little equipment. In the second segment, you will see metabolic conditioning, a legendary part of Florida State Basketball's pre-season training. In the final segment, Coach Bradley addresses special considerations for training the important and vulnerable ankle and lower leg.

Manual Resistance Training
Manual resistance training, or partner assisted exercise, is a method of training in which the "spotter" is the one applying the resistance to the person training. This allows any team to train without equipment. Coach Bradley addresses the many subtleties and coaching points that make this a superior technique when applied properly, and a great way to add variety to your workouts. This type of training is not only great for improving strength, but it instills team values in the athletes by requiring constant coaching and communication between the lifter and the spotter.

Metabolic Conditioning
There is cardiovascular fitness and strength, but there is also a third level of training called "metabolic conditioning." In this extremely intense workout, Bradley takes a player through a strength training workout and a conditioning session combined. The routine is such that the athlete will perform ten strength training exercises interspersed with ten sprints in an 18 to 24 minute period. While viewing this brutally tough workout, keep in mind that all the fundamentals of high intensity strength training must be ingrained in your players beforehand. Metabolic conditioning will only work with a fairly rapid pace, all out sets, and controlled reps. This is the highest level of physical training, and is a great workout for any team that has time restraints; it builds strength, cardiovascular fitness, and metabolic conditioning in one session. Metabolic conditioning should only be used by athletes who are highly trained.

The Ankle and Lower Leg
In the third segment he focuses on the ankle, one of the most injured joints of basketball players. By working to strengthen the joint as well as the lower leg muscles, a player is more resilient to injury and capable of a faster recovery if hurt. Some unique and practical approaches to training this often overlooked part of the body are presented.

About High Intensity Training by Michael Bradley

One to three sets of an exercise is not a magical formula in HIT, it’s just the reality of what you experience when you train very hard. Two or three workouts in any seven to fourteen day period is not written in stone for HIT; it’s the amount of recovery that the majority of people need in order to progress.

And if you want to train for a lifetime, you will have to learn impeccable technique. You must learn to control the resistance in order to put the tension on the muscles and to keep ballistic weight off of the joints.

High Intensity Training is about going all out, not almost all out. And that effort cannot be generated without a deep commitment to not only training, but to actually getting results from your training. There are far too many athletes who talk about wanting results more than anything else, but once they learn what really working hard consists of, the romance quickly fades. However, if you’re serious about seeing results, here’s a routine that will jump start your lower body strength and to introduce you to proper high intensity strength training. Don’t be too concerned about the equipment as you can train on anything similar.

The training starts with the MedX Avenger Leg Press, but if you can perform it safely, you can substitute the Barbell Squat for the Leg Press. This exercise sets the tone for the workout. When you apply true maximum effort, there is nothing more physically difficult than the Leg Press or Squat. The key to this exercise is your mindset before you begin. If you bring fear and trepidation, there will always be a cap on how strong you get. But if you bring a mindset of opportunity, then the world of training results can explode in front of you. Check your fear at the door before you begin.

The Leg Curl and Leg Extension are important exercises that isolate the muscles on either side of the knee. Attack these with the same level of controlled aggressiveness that you bring to the Leg Press or Squat. These exercises will really test your technique and rep form, as the limb is hanging out in space and there is nothing to control the end of the range of motion but your muscle contraction. If you can’t stop the weight in the fully contracted position, then you are lifting too fast. Slow down the rep speed so that you pause the weight at the end of the rep without any bouncing.

The Groin Adduction exercise is also a must for athletes. Don’t think of this as a foo foo movement that only fitness enthusiasts perform. These muscles will get very strong if trained properly, and your flexibility will improve along with your strength.

We finish this routine with the Hammer V Squat. Any compound joint exercise for the hip and thighs will work though. You’ll notice on this exercise that we have attached rubber bands. These bands are very heavy when stretched and have the effect of altering the strength curve of the machine in order to make the resistance lighter in the bottom position and heavier at the top. This helps compensate for the changing leverage as the thighs are extended.

Above all, watch the intensity level of this workout. Notice how each and every set is taken to a point of maximum effort. See how each repetition is controlled and be aware of the rapid workout pace as we move from one exercise to the next. And last but not least, be aware of the close level of supervision.

As I mentioned before, some may say it’s unnecessary to work at this level of intensity. And they may be right. But what I can tell you is that we get great results, and our players get to their genetic potential well before graduation by using High Intensity Training.

Preparación para el día de partido
Por Mike Dunleavy and Jim Eyen

We also review the opponent’s depth chart (players available at each position), thus anticipating their substitution pattern and how it may effect our rotation. Our trainer drops in and provides a brief injury report on our players and the status of any lingering issues. We then put aside our defensive concerns and discuss how they may defend us and what we can do to attack their schemes, traps and coverage.

The player’s film session begins with a synopsis of the opponent and their tendencies. We elaborate on their strengths and weaknesses as a team and individually. We announce our starters for the game along with the defensive match-ups. We encourage input and interaction from the players regarding any insight, questions, or suggestions regarding anticipated coverage. After viewing the 15-20 minute film edit we entertain any additional questions then move onto the court.

At this point we “walk-thru” the opponent’s actual plays. The numbers of plays vary from team to team. However, the average is 8 to 10 plays which include side out of bounds and baseline out of bounds. We have determined these to be the opponent’s most frequently run plays and/or their most important plays.
We demonstrate how to cover these plays and at times, provide alternative coverage in case we need to employ a back-up plan. Again, we value input from the players knowing that along with “contribution comes ownership”. We review the tendencies of our opponent regarding presses, traps, or defensive schemes they may use to cover our important plays. At times we will also “walk thru” some of our offense in order to refine our execution or apply subtle changes to existing plays.

We conclude the morning session with shooting drills and free throws. The shooting drills are geared toward shots taken out of our play sets. In most cases we split the team into “Bigs” and “Smalls” and work on each end of the floor. This game day practice or “Shoot-around” as it is referred to is usually held on the actual game court, thus you are limited to two baskets.
We find this routine to be an efficient way to shoot the most number of shots in the least amount of time. After a prescribed number of free throws we then adjourn. The coaches will remain afterwards and assist any players who want additional work; rookies and veterans alike, often utilize this opportunity.

We then reconvene in the early evening and begin the pre-game ritual. The coaches arrive at the arena between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m., while the players begin to arrive around 5:00 p.m. The early arrivals consist of mostly younger players and rookies. However, some of the veterans opt for extra court time as well. Prior to any work in the floor, the players check into the training room for ankle taping, treatment or other training needs they may have.
The coaches are also available for last minute individual film sessions. A common practice is to sit down with players and view briefly an individual edit of their defensive match-up for that night. At this point in the process, we try to keep it simple, but remain focused.

With 45 minutes remaining before game time all the players are in the locker room. Since 5:30 a full game copy of our last game vs. our opponent has been running on the big screen for those who choose to watch. At this time the players begin to look over the white board which has been made visible in the last few minutes. Due to the open access of the NBA locker room to the press and other credentialed people, the strategic notes on the board have remained covered until the 45 minute mark when the doors are closed to outsiders.
Shortly thereafter our team meeting begins. The meeting starts with an additional 10-15 minute film edit as described earlier. We then go through the basic points of our game plan and highlight the opposition’s strengths and weaknesses while reiterating particular coverage of our morning walk-thru.

Next we turn our attention to the white board. Most of the information on the board is consistent with our basic defense with some areas specific to this particular opponent. Based upon our opposition, “Pick and Rolls” and the “Low Post” are areas that can change on a nightly basis. If we face a Steve Nash in pick and rolls or a Tim Duncan in the low post, we must be willing to “customize” our basic coverage or we could be in for a long night.
There are statistical categories on the board that are addressed; for example, 3 point shooting capabilities and free throw accuracy. If a particular player shoots a remarkably low percentage from the free-throw line it is strongly noted. After any additional questions are answered and a few words of wisdom, the players move onto the court with approximately twenty minutes to warm up.

At some point before both coaching staffs go onto the floor, the official scorekeeper informs each locker room of the starters as designated by each team. Ninety percent of the time this is a predictable event. However, if there is a surprise in the line-up then our staff will confer and decide on any defensive match-up changes.

Once the game has started we rely on our detailed preparation. With the exception of a few instances, we have rehearsed in some fashion all defensive schemes, anticipated matchups, and posses back-up options. We are capable of making adjustments out of time-outs, at quarter breaks, or if necessary, on the “fly” because of our preparation.

At halftime the staff converses briefly while the players have an opportunity to take care of any personal needs, speak to the trainer, etc. The 14 minute break is brief, and therefore our coaches meeting and the address to the team must be as well. Based upon observations of the first half we will discuss any changes or adjustments with the team and then confer individually with players as necessary.

Immediately after the game, the coaches meet for a few minutes to discuss any quick post game thoughts and then assemble with the team for post-game comments. The following day at practice, the depth of our post-game analysis depends on the upcoming schedule. We may spend a few minutes or a few hours with the team analyzing our past performance. Yet one thing is certain, however long we dwell on yesterday’s game, preparation for the next game is looming. ..."

Bobby Cremins' Ultimate Offense
Winning Basketball Strategies and Plays
from an NCAA Coach's Personal Playbook
By Bobby Cremins

Bobby Cremins’ Ultimate Offense presents the complete offensive philosophy of one of college basketball’s most respected and successful coaches.
Complete with more than 150 detailed plays and drills straight from Coach Cremins’ personal playbook, it reveals strategies and offensive principles from more than two decades of successful coaching.
That's everything you need to know to play offensive basketball at its highest level.

When Bobby Cremins became head coach of Appalachian State University, he was one of the youngest professionals to ever lead an NCAA Division I basketball team. Going to Georgia Tech at 33, he was among the youngest ever in the history of the ACC.

Two decades later as Georgia Tech's all-time winningest coach, Cremins had compiled fourteen victorious seasons, six All-Americans, and two National Coach of the Year awards. How did he do it? The answers are here as Coach Cremins reveals the secrets of his powerful, high-pressure playbook for the first time ever.

In this action-packed guide for coaches and players, Cremins shares more than 150 super-charged plays and strategies guaranteed to make you rethink your offensive system, along with how he recruited many of the top point guards who played for him, and what he learned from each. You'll learn how to:

• Implement a fast break that's right for you and your personnel,
from missed shots to made baskets.
• Attack full- and half-court pressure and get high percentage shots.
• Go to your bread and butter plays for your half-court attack.
• Develop an aggressive zone offense.
• Beat the clock with great last-second shots and all kinds of special situations,
including three-point shots, out-of-bounds plays, and much more.

UNC-Charleston: Bobby Cremins Asks for Clemency ?

"... Bobby Cremins, the former Georgia Tech coach and now head man at the College of Charleston, has asked the University of North Carolina and the ACC to be relieved from his commitment to play the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill on Wednesday night.

“I don’t want to play ‘em,” said Cremins who led the Yellow Jackets to the Final Four in 1990 while earning the Naismith College Coach of the Year Award, “I didn’t want to play them to start with, and after Sunday night, I damn sure don’t want to play ‘em now. No freakin’ way.”

Coach Roy Williams said in his Monday ACC teleconference that he agreed to a home and home with Charleston out of respect for Cremins and his love for the low country of South Carolina.

“We own a home down there at Wild Dunes. There's no question that it's one of my favorites places to play golf, sit on the beach, and eat seafood, but I don't think I'll be doing any of those three when we come back next year to play,” Ol’ Roy said.

Charleston is a member of the Southern Conference and their hoops squad is off to a solid start posting a 10-2 record. The Cougars also lost their last game – to ranked conference foe Davidson 79-75. That experience will not help them when they face a Tar Heel team which no doubt suffered through some tough practices this week after losing to B.C. in the conference opener.

The Cougars do not have a football program and are best-known for thier men's basketball team. In hoops the Cougars won the NAIA national title in 1983 and have made four trips to the NCAA Tournament (1994, 1997, 1998 and 1999). Charleston also boasts the 2004, 2005, 2006, & 2007 SoCon Champion baseball team, 2004 SoCon Championship men's soccer team and the 2003 & 2005 SoCon Championship softball teams. From 2001 to 2007 the Cougars have won SoCon titles in women's volleyball, men's and women's swimming, diving, men's and women's cross country, women's track and field and women’s basketball. Just the same, on Wednesday night, they won’t be playing softball or soccer or baseball.

In addition they have excellent equestrian and sailing teams, not to mention student rugby clubs for both the men and the women. None of this means diddly squat when they face a very cranky Tar Heel squad tomorrow night.

Cremins became the basketball coach in 2006. The ACC coaching legend had coached Georgia Tech from 1981 to 2000. In addition to reaching the Final Four in 1990, Cremins’ Jackets won three ACC tournaments. Unfortunately, none of that means jack crap when Charleston plays a fired-up UNC team Wednesday.

Cremins is, in fact, so good that prior to his run in Atlanta he made Appalachian State, a football school, a Southern Conference basketball power. The Cremins led Mountaineers won the SoCon regular season or tournament championship in 1979, 1978 and 1981. However, none of that will translate into baskets or rebounds when the Cougars tangle with a recently jilted formerly number 1 ACC powerhouse on their home court.

“Look, I won 100 games at Appalachian State and everybody knows that’s a football school, and I took Georgia Tech, another football school, to the Final Four,” said Cremins, “but, this? This is ridiculous.”

ACC Commissioner John Swofford said, “Fish gotta swim, birds gotta eat. Nothin’ personal, it’s jut bidness. Play ball.” ..."
Bleacher Report

"... This action-packed guide features more than 150 plays and strategies by Bobby Cremins, one of college basketball’s most renowned coaches. Guaranteed to make you rethink how you run your offense, the book defines how to implement a fast break that’s right for your personnel, how to go from a missed shot to a basket; how to attack full- and half-court pressure and get high percentage shots; how to beat the clock with great last-second shots and all kinds of special situations. ..."
Booklist

"... I'm so happy I purchased this book. It really is the kind of book you could live by for running an offense for the entire year. I'd recommend this for high school or above. If you had a junior high or AAU team that practiced everyday you could certainly implement the knowledge from this book to your practices and game plans. ..."
Coach George Sylvester, W.Bridgewater, MA)

"... Really good read. This is a great book for coaches of all levels. It is one of the more practical offensive books I've encountered.

It doesn't focus on any one offence in particular, it simply offers a number of different offences that you can run depending on the personnel you have in your team. ..."
P. Lankford

NBA Coaches Playbook:
Techniques, Tactics & Teaching Points

Mike Krzyzewski and Rick Pitino attest to the benefits college basketball coaches glean from the pro level.

Now college and high school coaches can get advice from top NBA coaches in the NBA Coaches Association’s upcoming NBA Coaches Playbook.
The first of its kind, the playbook offers a collection of proven methods and strategies from the NBA’s  elite coaches on maximizing player and team performance.

“Winning basketball was and still is a matter of fundamentals and details, but you also need a tough attitude in order to reach the top,” says Basketball Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson.

In NBA Coaches Playbook, 28 successful coaches offer more than 450 Xs-and-Os diagrams and expertise, including tips from Phil Jackson on the fast break, Tex Winter on the triangle offense, and Pete Carril and Eddie Jordan on the Princeton offense.

Each chapter offers technical teaching points, practice drills, tactical nuances, or game-management tools that provide a coaching edge. The book’s “special plays” section should be especially popular among coaches seeking the out-of-bounds and last-second plays that work when the game is on the line.
