FIBA Américas - Confirmado el itinerario de la Liga de las Américas 2012

   
La quinta edición de la Liga de las Américas ya tiene su calendario oficial, las sedes de los cuadrangulares de la primera ronda y los equipos participantes.  La Liga, considerada la competencia de clubes más importante del continente, comenzará el 24 de febrero en Cancún, México.

“Es un honor para nosotros, anunciar oficialmente nuestro calendario de competencia y todos los pormenores de este gran evento, que año tras año continua llenándonos de orgullo. Esta vez en su quinta edición, la Liga de las Américas 2012 será la más competitiva que hemos tenido en nuestra historia, pues contamos con clubes muy aguerridos, dignos representantes de su país. Será una competencia que demostrará nuevamente el excelente nivel de basquetbol con  el que cuentan los clubes de América.”, dijo Horacio Muratore, Presidente de FIBA Américas.

Con la participación de 16 equipos la primera fase se juega en cuatro cuadrangulares de cuatro equipos cada uno durante tres días por el sistema de todos contra todos. Los dos mejores equipos de cada cuadrangular pasan a la segunda ronda y se dividen en dos grupos de cuatro y juegan ahora de la misma manera en dos cuadrangulares.

Los dos mejores equipos de cada uno de las cuadrangulares semifinales juegan luego el cuadrangular final o “final four”.

Todos los partidos de la Liga de las Américas se transmitirán a través de Fox Sports.

La Liga de las Américas 2012 se jugará en cuatro sedes. El cuadrangular del Grupo A (24-26 de febrero) en Cancún, México; el del Grupo B (2-4 de marzo) en Caracas, Venezuela; el del Grupo C (9-11 de marzo) en Arecibo, Puerto Rico; y el del Grupo D (16 al 18 de marzo) en San Pablo, Brasil.

“La verdad que poner el nombre de La Unión de Formosa en el plano internacional es un orgullo y también era un primer objetivo que nos fijamos desde que estamos en la máxima categoría del básquet argentino.”, dijo Mario Romay, Director Deportivo de La Unión de Formosa. “Tener la posibilidad de competir en la Liga de Las Américas, con la televisación de Fox para todo el continente, y sabiendo también que es como la Copa Libertadores en fútbol, nos hace pensar que es el mejor torneo internacional en el que podemos estar”.

Joinville, por su parte, regresa a la Liga luego de un año de ausencia. Su dirigente, Luis Silva comento que “Este año, tuvimos una revisión drástica en el proyecto tanto como patrocinadores en la parte técnica, y hemos recibido la noticia como una recompensa y un estímulo. Esta es una competencia muy importante, que nos da la oportunidad de competir contra los mejores equipos internacionales. Los jugadores están muy motivados".

Otro club que regresa a la Liga, por segundo año consecutivo es Cocodrilos de Caracas, club de Venezuela que llega con metas de avanzar y demostrar su capacidad. Rostin González, Gerente General de Cocodrilos de Caracas comentó que "a finales de septiembre del año pasado formalizamos nuestra inscripción en el campeonato de clubes más importante en nuestro continente.

En esta ocasión asistiremos por segunda vez a la Liga de las Américas y tenemos el compromiso de asumir un rol muy importante, queremos mejorar nuestra participación en el torneo. Bajo ese concepto podremos generar mayor proyección y desarrollo profesional a todos los que militan en nuestras filas".

En las cuatro ediciones anteriores de la Liga, Peñarol de Mar del Plata ha conquistado dos títulos (2007-08/2009-2010), mientras que Universo (ahora Uniceub)/BRB (2008-09) y Regatas Corrientes (2010-11) cuentan con un campeonato cada uno.

En unas declaraciones previas, el Secretario General de FIBA Américas, el Sr. Alberto García comentó que “esta Liga de las Américas se jugará en su V Edición y ha representado durante las cuatro ediciones anteriores un éxito total para nuestra Institución, ha valorizado las competencias nacionales de los países participantes y ha permitido a jugadores, entrenadores y árbitros un mejor y más elevado taller de desarrollo profesional.




En FIBA Américas junto a nuestros directivos, estamos muy conformes por el desarrollo de esta competencia anual, que permite a los clubes campeones nacionales el participar en un siguiente escalón, en una Liga de carácter internacional.”

¡ Venezuela será la casa del Repechaje Olímpico 2012 !

La reunión del Buró Central de FIBA ya produjo hoy su primer anuncio y es uno que retumba en todo el continente Americano pues a Venezuela ha sido otorgada la sede del Repechaje Olímpico 2012,  a jugarse en del 2 al 8 de julio del próximo año.

Luego de un riguroso proceso de inspección, el comité evaluador de FIBA estudió las ofertas y decidió que Lituania y Venezuela serían los finalistas a considerar para servir de anfitriones de este importante torneo mundial que otorgará tres plazas a los Juegos Olímpicos 2012.

Al final, la oferta venezolana pudo más, con el atractivo del compromiso de apoyo total que ha hecho el gobierno y las autoridades del país para remodelar completamente el Poliedro de Caracas, que será la casa oficial del evento, y de crear carriles especiales para alivianar el problema que podía ocasionar el tráfico el tráfico de la ciudad.

El Sr. Carmelo Cortez, presidente de la Federación de Baloncesto Venezuela, manifestó previo al anuncio que su oferta “tiene una fuerte voluntad política de nuestro gobierno para cumplir con todas nuestras obligaciones y organizar un evento FIBA de primera clase que nos hace orgullosos y que hará que los equipos se sientan como en casa. La unión que existe entre las autoridades - no sólo gubernamental, sino también deportivas, como el Ministerio del Deporte, Comité Olímpico Venezolano y la Federación de Baloncesto de Venezuela, prevé una excelente asociación estratégica en vista de un escenario ganador”.

Aunque el país nunca ha organizado un Campeonato de FIBA mundo, Venezuela ya ha organizado torneos de baloncesto internacional, dándole la bienvenida en el 2006 al Campeonato Sudamericano masculino y en el 2002 al Campeonato FIBA Américas U18 masculino.

“Es un día importante en el basquetbol no solo de Venezuela, sino de todo el continente americano. Hoy se nos da una nueva oportunidad de probarle al mundo la capacidad organizativa que tienen nuestras federaciones y, en el trayecto, expandir la gama de países de América con experiencia organizando eventos mundiales de basquetbol. Este tipo de torneo tiene repercusiones no solo en el futuro inmediato de la selección nacional, sino que en todas las ramas del deporte, desde categorías menores hasta baloncesto femenino. La exposición de basquetbol de alto calibre para todos los venezolanos significa un gran paso en el desarrollo de nuestro deporte en el país.”, declaró Horacio Muratore, presidente de FIBA Américas.

Venezuela asistirá al repechaje luego de clasificar en la quinta plaza del Campeonato Preolímpico de Baloncesto de Mar del Plata, Argentina 2011, el cual además de haber otorgado dos cupos directos a Londres (Brasil y Argentina), concedió boletos al repechaje a las selecciones que ocuparon la tercera, cuarta y quinta posición en este torneo.

Greivis Vázquez, el NBA y referente de la selección nacional de Venezuela manifestó previo al anuncio que “la planificación de la preparación será mejor aquí. No queremos ir a otro lugar, porque seguimos soñando con Londres 2012 (Olimpíadas), y si jugamos aquí por qué no lograr esa meta al llegar entre los tres primeros".

Además de Venezuela están clasificados al repechaje Puerto Rico y República Dominicana por América, Angola y Nigeria por África, Grecia, Lituania, Macedonia y Rusia por Europa, Jordania y Korea por Asia, y Nueva Zelanda por Oceanía .

Los grupos se dividirán en cuatro, con tres equipos cada uno. A la siguiente ronda clasificarán las dos mejores selecciones de cada llave. Los cuartos de final se jugarán bajo el formato de "muerte súbita". Luego vendrán las semifinales, los conjuntos finalistas irán a Londres y los perdedores disputarán la última plaza olímpica.





El repechaje olímpico femenino será en Turquía. Lo países representativos de América serán Argentina, Canadá y en la reunión del Buró Central trascendió que la selección nacional femenina de Puerto Rico sustituirá a Cuba, que no podrá llevar a su equipo al clasificatorio olímpico el próximo año.

Evento de la magnitud y organización que merece el Baloncesto en Colombia

Saludo especial.

Con mucho respeto me dirijo a ustedes para contarles acerca del proyecto de la empresa Pasión por la Cesta, cuyo objetivo es trabajar en tres servicios: capacitación deportiva, realización de torneos y entrenamiento de Baloncesto.  

En la actualidad se realiza el TORNEO INVITACIONAL PASIÓN POR LA CESTA 2011 donde se hacen partidos promocionales, gracias al apoyo del señor Helder Acevedo, Director de Bienestar Universitario y a Hector Arias Jefe de deportes de la Universidad San Buenaventura de Bello, Medelïn, Colombia, juegos que tienen como finalidad construir torneos abiertos para el año 2012.

El concurso de todos ustedes es fundamental y las directivas de Pasión por la Cesta agradecen las ideas, sugerencias y todo el apoyo que pueda surgir para construir eventos de la magnitud y organización que merece el Baloncesto en Antioquia, Colombia.

Monday, September 5

At 11am, Brad Greenberg and I left the hotel to attend the first game played today and the Dominican Republic beat Panama. Near the end of the game, DR point guard Edgar Sosa suffered a bad leg injury. He had played some solid minutes for coach John Calapari and we are all hopeful that Edgar will have a successful recovery from injury. The DR continues to play excellent basketball.

Venezuela 82 v Puerto Rico 94

We lost today to an excellent Puerto Rico team, 94-82. Puerto Rico hurt us inside as center Daniel Santiago had 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field in 19 minutes and forward Alex Galindo caught fire from the outside. We focused on both guards Jose Barea (3-of-10 from field) and Carlos Arroyo (5-of-12 from the field) and Ricky Sanchez was 2-of-9 from the field but Santiago and NBA forward Ronaldo Balkman came off the bench and had nine points in 11 minutes.

We didn't shoot the ball well today as we hit just 40% from the field. Oscar Torres played well for us and was 5-of-6 from three-point land and had 17 points. Axiers Sucre came off the bench and scored 18 points. We had a very poor third quarter and that was when Puerto Rico opened up the game. With the Puerto Rico game over, it is now time for the staff and players to focus on Argentina. We have tried to have the team only focus on the team in front of us that day and not to look at any other team. The Argentine game v Canada is on local TV so everyone can watch the game from their hotel rooms. The last game of today, Uruguay v Brazil, will be scouted by the staff as we play Uruguay on Thursday.

All the Argentine games have been a full house and a great atmosphere as the home crowd does a great job supporting their team. The Argentine team is the most talented team here and they are well coached and present many problems.

Tuesday, September 6 - Argentina 111 v Venezuela 93

The mood pre-game was pretty focused as we have played Argentina tree times prior to the tournament and with each game, we have played them closer. Our forward Nestor Colmenares was suspended for the game by FIBA for an incident in yesterday's game against Puerto Rico and our off-guard Jose Vargas had a slight hamstring pull and was unavailable. This meant we were down to 10 healthy bodies.

We played a solid game but Argentina shot the ball so well today from three-point land (18-of-28). Our team continues to play hard but we must defend better than we did today. We wanted to play a fast pace game as Argentina leads the tournament in fewest points allowed and we knew we could not play a grind-it-out, slow paced game. The pace was what we wanted and we got good minutes off the bench from back-up point guard Heissler Guillen and Windi Graterol (nine-of-10 from the field). We had decided prior to the game that we wanted to punch the ball inside to Hector Romero as Argentina starts a natural small forward at the power forward spot in Andres Nocioni. Pepito was phenomenal with 21 points in 23 minutes but Nocioni creates a match-up problem at the offensive end for every power forward here. Today was no different as Nocioni went 6-of-7 from the field. He could be one of the most difficult match-ups we have faced. Emanuel Ginobili was spectacular as he shot 10-of-14 from the field.

Wednesday, September 7 - Venezuela v Panama

Tomorrow there will be many great games and our 2pm game against Panama will be no different. Panama has two excellent inside scorers (Jamie Lloreda and Ruben Garces and two scoring guards (Danilo Pinnock and Gary Forbes) who can put points on the board in a hurry.

Thursday, September 8 - Venezuela v Uruguay

Uruguay is a country of 3.4 million people. Their team is led by forward/center Esteban Batista and off-guard Leandro García-Morales. Their coach, Gerardo Jaurí, has done a very good job with his team the entire tournament. We can expect Uruguay to be very physical on this, the last day of the second round.

Wednesday, September 7 - Venezuela 110 Panama 74

This was by far the best overall day for the tournament with every game having great meaning. R.C. Buford, the general manager of the San Antonio Spurs, and New York Knicks scout Scott McGuire, were both scouting. The first game went down to the wire as Canada beat Uruguay. We had the second game and played our best offensive game of the tournament. Coming into the game, we led the tournament in scoring with an average of 92.7 points per game and free throw percentage (78.4%). We are second in 3-point percentage (39.1%). Today we continued to excel in those three categories as we scored 110 points and shot 16 of 32 from three-point range (50%) and 8-of-10 from the foul line. We continue to score early in the shot clock in transition as we outscored Panama 30-2 in fast-break points. The best stat of the game, however, was 32 assists on 43 field goals and only eight turnovers. Greivis Vasquez came into the game as the tournament's second leading scorer (behind Al Horford) and GV had 24 points in 25 minutes. Oscar Torres had 16 points and nailed four 3-pointers. For Panama, they where led in scoring by forward Josimar Ayarza, who had 30 points. We had one of our better defensive efforts as we held Panama's top four scorers (Gary Forbes, Danilio Pinnock, Ruben Garces and Jaime Lloreda) to a combined 33 points.

This win means we control our own destiny in the Thursday game against Uruguay. With a win, we would finish the tournament in fifth place and qualify next summer for another pre-Olympic Qualifier (FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament).

We had our team lunch post game and then the coaching staff began its preparation for Thursday's game against Uruguay. The two night games featured four excellent teams as Argentina played Brazil and the Dominican Republic played Puerto Rico. We decided to have a single-minded focus and as a team ate together at 8:30PM and then watched film on Uruguay tendencies from 9PM to 10PM.

Thursday, September 8 - Venezuela v Uruguay

The day will start with a team breakfast at 10:30am and we will pass out the scouting reports for the players to review. On the bus ride to the arena today, we will have video rolling on Uruguay to get one last look at our opponent.


Friday September 9

The Top 4 teams will begin preparation. Our team will be headed home. Most everyone will take the seven-hour flight from Argentina to Caracas, Venezuela, and I will head from Argentina to San Francisco on a 20-hour day ahead. Then some family time and then off to Los Angeles to begin working for the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League. Two of our coaches used this opportunity to get new jobs as Brad Greenberg will be the head coach of Bucaneros de la Guaira in the Venezuelan Liga Professional De Baloncesto (LPB) league and work for a tremendous owner, Rufo John. Daniel Seoane will be an assistant coach for Bigua of Montevideo, Uruguay, in the Liga Uruguaya De Basket League (LUB). Argentina , Brazil , Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic will now get ready for the next stage of the tournament which begins Saturday.

Thursday, September 8 - Venezuela 92 Uruguay 80

Huge win for Venezuela Basketball!!

We are off to next summer's World Olympic Qualifiers after finishing in fifth place in this tournament (FIBA Americas Championship). We ended the championship with a 4-4 record. We had loses to Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Argentina and wins over Cuba, Canada, Panama and Uruguay. Our goal coming in was to somehow get the fifth spot so all of us are extremely happy.

Many thought this would be a rebuilding year as we went with such a young team. We started two guards with just one year of pro experience - Greivis Vasquez and David Cubillan - and our starting center, Gregory Echenique, is still in college playing at Creighton. Our team's average age was 26, so the future for the Venezuela national team is very bright. Young big men Windi Graterol and Jose Bravo really developed their games in a short period. Off-the-bench players Nestor Colmenares and Dwight Lewis are also first-year professionals.

The day started with a major upset as Panama beat Canada, which meant Uruguay with a win over us by four points or more would qualify. The Panama game gave Uruguay extra motivation. We started the game off posting Hector Romero and he was overpowering in the post with 12 first-quarter points. Oscar Torres and David Cubillan played well throughout the game. The game leaned in our favor in the second half when Greivis Vasquez hit back-to-back three-pointers.

Uruguay got great games from point guard Martin Osimani and off-guard Leandro Garcia Morales.

We ate our team lunch at the hotel and started packing. We will leave the hotel at 10pm and travel to Buenos Aires from the lovely beach town of Mar del Plata on a five-Hour bus trip. The flight back to Caracas, Venezuela, leaves at 7am. The four people going back to the US (Coach Brad Greenberg, Dwight Lewis, Gregory Echenique and me) all leave at 8:30 pm so we will have all day in Buenos Aires to relax.

This was a great tournament and was one of the best experiences I have ever had coaching. I love the FIBA game and feel lucky to have been a part of such a great tournament.

Friday, September 2

The day started with me and assistant coaches Brad Greenberg and Henry Paruta scouting the 11:30am contest between Canada and Cuba. Houston Rockets VP of Player Personnel Gerson Rosas is scouting the event and he rode on our team bus to the game. We got a chance to sit together and talk hoops.

Immediately after the game, we went to our 2pm practice. This was our only day without a game so we got in a good two-hour practice. We walked through Canada offensive-sets and how we would defend them and talked about the importance of keeping the game at high pace that could be to our advantage.

After practice, we had a late lunch at 5pm and a team film session on Canada at 6pm. It was our most detailed film session so far as we had three game tapes of Canada to splice together. We also went through Canada's half-court plays and favorite out-of-bounds plays and how we would defend them.

After the team film meeting Brad Greenberg , Daniel Seoane, our GM Alberto Díaz and I went to scout Puerto Rico v Argentina (two opponents we will see next week). We have played Argentina in friendly games leading up to the tournament so we focused on Puerto Rico as it was our first real look at PR.

Between games it was great to chat with USA Basketball's Jim Tooley. Many years ago, I had the chance to be a part of USA Basketball and developed a great relationship with JT.


Saturday September 3

Venezuela vs Canada 103-98 (OT)

Morning team breakfast was at 8:30am and the team bus left the NH Gran Provincial Hotel at 9:40 for the 11:30am game.

This was a huge win for us. We felt we needed a fast-paced game and if the score was in the 60s, it would favor Canada. They are a phenomenal defensive team. Our guards and wings did a good job pushing the ball and our big men (Windy Graterol, Jose Bravo and Axiers Sucre) ran the floor hard as we outscored Canada 33-9 in fast-break points. Greivis Vasquez played a unbelievable first quarter and first half . In the second half we posted Hector "Pepito" Romero and he did a great job getting to the foul line with 14 FTAs (free-throw attempts) and 28 points. He had a huge late 4th quarter steal.

Back-up point guard Jermaine Anderson had a big game for Canada with 28 points in 30 minutes but our wing players GV, Oscar Torres and Jose Vargas did a great job chasing Canada's three-point shooters Carl English and Andrew Rautins. We continue to get great minutes from starting center Gregory Echenque (10pts, 10rbs in 29 minutes) as he outplayed Miami Heat starting center Joel Anthony (9 points/9 rebounds in 32 minutes).

GV fouled out and we relied heavily on David Cubillan down the stretch.

Immediately after the Canada game, we had to begin for our preparation for the next four opponents: Puerto Rico on Monday, Tuesday Argentina, Panama Wednesday and Thursday Uruguay . Assistant coaches Brad Greenberg and Daniele Seoane stayed and scouted the 2:30pm Uruguay win over Paraguay.

Saturday night as a staff, we went and scouted 8:30pm Argentina v Panama game.

Two teams that played hard but where undermanned, Cuba and Paraguay, where eliminated today.

Sunday September 4

We woke up early and started watching more film on Puerto Rico. The pick-and-rolls with Carlos Arroyo and Juan 'JJ' Barea will be a huge concern. A third NBA player on the PR roster is forward Renaldo Balkman, who supplies energy and rebounding. Forward Ricky Sanchez is a great shooter and really spreads the floor for them and is a tough match-up as pick-and-pop player. Inside, they will look to post up Daniel Santiago.

We had a two-hour practice and a team film session on PR. The players have been an extremely focused group in our preparation for games and today was no different. After practice we had a 3pm team lunch and then a film meeting with the team at 7pm.

Monday September 5th

Missing my two-year anniversary with my wife. Will have to settle for early morning film on Puerto Rico. We will have a team breakfast at 10:30 am and get ready for the game with our bus leaving at noon for our 2pm tip-off.

We trained long and hard in Venezuela, Argentina and Uruguay and finally arrived in Mar del Plata three days before the FIBA Americas Championship.

The bus trip from Buenos Aires to Mar del Plata was five hours.

Most of the teams are staying at the same hotel and eat meals in one large dining room with tables reserved for each team. It´s nice because it gives players and coaches time to interact and socialize. One of the assistant coaches of Canada is Scott Roth, a former high school teammate of mine. It's great to be able to spend time with him. I have also enjoyed talking with Canada's Head Coach Leo Rautins and Dominican Republic Coach John Calapari and assistant coaches Billy Bayno and Dell Harris. I've also had the chance to spend time with players on other teams that I have coached.

The first night in Mar del Plata, we practiced at "Punto Sur", a sport club 20 minutes from the hotel. It was a nice facility but the gym was pretty cold. On Monday, we had a great shoot-around in the arena "Polideportivo Islas Malvinas" where we play the tournament. Former NBA great Gail Goodrich was at practice because he is working as a TV analyst for FIBA.

Pre-Olympics

August 30 v Brazil

Our first game was on Tuesday against Brazil. They are extremely well coached. Our staff worked hard to prepare for this one. Daniel Seoane broke down film to show the team and Brad Greenberg did the walk through of Brazil plays. The guys gave a great effort on the court and played a strong game, but Brazil's experience showed as they have played together for so many years and knew how to close the game. Brazil point guard Marcelo Huertas had a phenomenal floor game and played well down the stretch. Greivis Vasquez played his heart out for us and got to the foul line 11 times and had seven assists to go with 26 points.

August 31 v Dominican Republic

Our second game had an early 11:30am start. We played with great enthusiasm and effort and went to a zone defense for most of the game. The Dominican Republic has one of the best big men in the world - NBA All Star Al Horford. We felt a zone might be able to neutralize him a bit. However the Dominican Republic has a deep team with former NBA player Louis Flores and current NBA player Charlie Villanueva coming off the bench for them. No other team in the tournament has current or former NBA players coming off the bench for them. Flores had a strong fourth quarter and was a key to the Dominicans beating us 92-89. Oscar Torres had 19 points in 28 minutes for us and Vasquez nearly had a triple-double with 16 points, nine assists and 10 rebounds.


September 1 v Cuba

We played our best game of the tournament today as our backs were against the wall after two very tough losses. It was a must win for us and our players really responded as we beat Cuba 106-60. We got great play from both starting guards (Greivis Vasquez and David Cubillan) today and our bench was terrific as Dwight Lewis and Nester Colmenares, two players who have not gotten an opportunity to play much, both did this time and were terrific. Cuba was led in scoring by point guard Alexis Mestre (six 3-pointers, 26pts).

Friday, September 2

Our staff will scout the Cuba v Canada game and then head to our 2pm practice to begin the preparations for Canada. We have a bye after three games in three nights. The Canada contest on Saturday will be a physical game as Canada has played great defense throughout the first part of the tournament. Their defense is keyed by Miami Heat center Joel Anthony and they have two great outside shooters in Carl English and New York Knick Andy Rautins, as well as NBA first round draft pick Cory Joseph.

The Beginning

On July 18th, we took a long fight from San Francisco to Caracas, Venezuela for the start of our training camp. I was injured, so my wife Danyelle travelled to help me get adjusted. Just a few days before the flight, I tore my Achilles, so I travelled with a case and crutches.

We arrived in La Guaira, a beautiful place just five minutes from the airport, and we stayed at the 5-Star Marriott Hotel. The training camp experience went well. We had all the meals on a 12th floor restaurant that overlooked the beach of La Guaira. Most of our meals included fresh fish. Assistant coach Brad Greenberg had traveled to Venezuela a few days before and did a great job meeting with the players before I arrived.

Training camp began with 13 straight days of practices. We practiced twice each day and the players were focused and worked hard. We played our first two games in Caracas at the "Gimansio Joaquin Papá Carrillo" with the first night a sellout. It was a very enthusiastic crowd.

(Venezuela v Japan)

Japan's coach is an American coach named Tom Wiseman. He brought his team to South America because he wanted his team to experience playing against a fast and athletic team.

We then went back to two-a-day- practices for two days for the Super 4 played in La Guaira at the "Polideportivo José María Vargas" - the home of the Bucaneros de La Guaira team. The first day we played against Cuba and won 92-61. Greivis Vasquez had a very good night, scoring 18 points, and Axier Sucre came off the bench to add 10 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes. Cuba´s team is coach by Argentinian Ariel Amarillo and was led in scoring by Yorman Polas, who had 16 Points.

The next day we played against Panama and won 94-56 - our fourth straight victory since the start of training camp. Panama coach Dave Rosario wasn't with the team because he had just finished coaching in the play-offs in Puerto Rico. Having playing against Panama last year at the CentroBasket, we know that Coach Rosario's team will be very patient and have great execution in Mar del Plata. Off the bench for us, Jose Vargas had 12 points in 16 minutes. Panama was led in scoring by guard Jamahr Warren, who is an off guard but played the point in this game.

It was good to see Panama player Alex Smith, one of my former players in the NBA Development league with the Reno Bighorns last year.

The last game in La Guaira was against Brazil and it was a phenomenal first half for both teams. However, in the second half everything changed. Brazil is extremely well coached and the players really understand coach Ruben Magnano's system. Coach Magnano won a gold medal with the Argentina team (2004 Olympics). Tiago Splitter, who plays with the San Antonio Spurs, didn´t play in this game. He will be a very important part of their team in Mar del Plata. Brazil won 78-63. We had a bad shooting night - 34% from the field and 17% from three-point range. Marcelo Machado had 14 points in 21 minutes and Giovannoni Guilhermi had 19 points and six rebounds for Brazil.

Brazil won the tournament 3-0, Venezuela went 2-1, Panama 1-2 and Cuba 0-3.

Travel to Argentina - August 10, 2011

The day stared great as Oscar Torres joined us. Oscar will be our starting three man and will provide great veteran leadership for our young team. I was surprised to learn that a flight from Caracas to Buenos Aires was seven hours. My two sons Michael and Matthew were with the team helping as ball boys at the Super 4 in Venezuela and came with us to Argentina.

Cordoba, Argentina

We spent the night in Buenos Aires, where my wife Danyelle also met the team on a flight from Atlanta, and the next day we all took a flight to Cordoba for the Super 4. We stayed in a nice hotel in Cordoba that was next to a mall and the arena was within walking distance from the hotel.

Our first game was against Uruguay, a very physical team, and they do a great job settings screens. Without Esteban Batista, their best inside player, Venezuela won 86-79 and our record moved to 5-1 . Grevis Vasquez was 8 of 11 from the field and 6 of 6 from the foul line while off guard Leandro Garcia Morales had 25 points for Uruguay. The next day we played in the final game against Argentina, who beat Cuba the night before. This Argentina team plays as if they are on a mission. The players have a laser like approach that is similar to an NBA team that is closing in on a NBA championship.

Argentina's roster is filled with six current or former NBA players: Emanuel Ginobili, Luis Scola, Andres Nocioni, Carlos Delfino, Fabricio Oberto and Pepe Sánchez. Oberto was playing in front of his hometown fans and the sold-out crowd greeted him with a great ovation.

Greivis Vasquez of the Memphis Grizzlies was injured the night before against Uruguay and he did not play in this game and we struggled without his presence. Backup center Jose Bravo had a very good game with 12 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes. For Argentina, Ginobili had 22 points in 19 minutes and was 4 of 4 from the three-point line. We did a poor job of defending the three-point shot as Argentina shot 15 of 29 on three-balls.

Argentina appears to have the strongest roster and is the favorite to win the Pre-Olympic.

Rosario, Argentina

Next morning we traveled via bus to Rosario. It was a five-hour bus trip. We left the hotel at 7:00 am. We had a rematch with Argentina and played much better. It was a back-and-forth game and Argentina led by one point at the half. A standing room crowd of over 8,000 made for a great atmosphere. GV (Vasquez) didn´t dress due to soreness in his foot. Fatigue caught up with us in the second game. The final score was 90-73. This was a loss but one we could build off as we took many positive steps. Center Gregory Echenique really responded and played very well for us. He was 3 of 3 from the field and 6 of 6 from the foul line and had 13 points and nine rebounds in just 14 minutes. Nocioni had 13 points and was 3 of 4 from three-ball range for Argentina.

Santa Fe, Argentina

We were informed a few days earlier we would play a game in Santa Fe against Cuba. The bus ride from Rosario to Santa Fe was two hours. We played in front of a small crowd of a few hundred people and beat Cuba. Combo forward Nestor Colmenares and swingman Dwight Lewis came off the bench to spark us. The highlight of the day was the post-game meal we had in the arena where we ate "choripanes" - the best sausage many of us had ever eaten.

After this win over Cuba, our record was 6-3 with a loss to Brazil and two losses to Argentina.

Montevideo, Uruguay

Our next trip was a six-hour bus trip from Santa Fe to Buenos Aires. The bus stopped at a McDonald´s and we grabbed some lunch. We spent that night in Buenos Aires and the next morning we took a ferry boat from Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires to Montevideo, Uruguay.

One thing you will never see in the NBA is three teams on a ferry boat together as Venezuela, Cuba and the Argentina B team were all on the boat. It is neat to see how the players from other countries interact. It is not usual for all the teams to stay at the same hotel in these competitions as well.

In the hotel lobby, we got a chance to meet and talk with Spanish coach (Puerto Rico's 2009 FIBA Americas Championship gold-medal winning coach) Moncho Monsalve. We invited him to our shoot-around that morning and we sat together on the bus and talked basketball. What a great basketball mind!

The Gym "Palacio Peñarol" was very cold for a shoot-around and point guard David Cubillan actually got injured that morning due to the cold and was unable to play for our next two games.

The first night we played against Argentina's B team. They are a young and very talented team that had lost a few days earlier by one point against Paraguay. That night, the arena was extremely cold. It was a close game in the first half but the Argentine B team outplayed us in the second half. They are a tremendous outside shooting team with many three-point threats. Coach Enrique Tolcachier does an incredible job with this team. They execute and really understand their roles.

The second game was against Uruguay. We were surprised at how small the crowd was. Only about 500 people showed up. We played the entire game in a 2-3 zone and a 1-3-1 1/2 (court) trapping zone. We played zone because Uruguay does such a good job in their half-court man to man offense. They set great screens to free up their best shooters and have an inside scoring threat with Esteban Batista.

With our starting point guard David Cubillan still out with an injury, our backup point guard Heissler Guillent had a phenomenal game, scoring 17 points in 23 minutes and he had four assists. We won the game, 83-74.

The third night, game number three in Montevideo, we beat Cuba 84-68 to end the tournament with a 2-1 record and move to 8-4 overall thus far. We played more 2-3 zone and 1-3-1 along with 2-2-1 full-court to try and slow Cuba down in transition.

The most promising thing about this night for Venezuela basketball was this was the first game for power forward Hector "Pepito" Romero, who had been rehabilitating from a knee injury. It was planned for Pepito to play in the game in Luna Park the next night. However, during the day Pepito and I talked while lifting weights at a local health club about starting him that evening and playing just five minutes. We then met with Dr. Juan Letezia to get his approval. That night, Hector played a total of seven minutes with great enthusiasm, scoring our first four points of the game. He finished with six points. We were all very happy for Hector as he has worked hard on his rehab.

For me, August 24th was a big day back home to miss. It was my son Mathew's 11th birthday, and my sister Nicole's birthday is on the same day. It was also the first day of school for both my sons. As a coach, it is days like this one that are so hard.

Buenos Aires

August 25th was the hardest day of travel yet for us.

After playing the previous three nights in Montevideo, we traveled by plane to Buenos Aires for our game that night. Although only a 40-minute flight, it was still an international flight and required us to be at the airport two hours prior to flying. Plus, we had to go through customs which took some time. At the hotel upon our arrival, we had to wait over an hour to get our room keys and yet still had to play a game against Argentina - the world's third ranked team - that night. The players did an awesome job of getting ready that night prior to tip-off in front a sold out 8,000 seat Luna Park arena. We ended up losing by four points but I have never been prouder of a team.

The effort of the guys was unbelievable; we played three point guards together at the same time down the stretch of the fourth quarter, and forward Windi Graterol was phenomenal the entire game as he had 15 points and nine rebounds. David Cubillan had 16 points. We lost 77-73. Hopefully this game will give us more confidence as we head into Mar del Plata.

Three random thoughts after six weeks in South America

On these trips, we had different experiences because of the different cultures. The typical breakfast since we have been on the road has been tons of meat and cheese.

Also, here the games start at 10:00 pm, and dinners are pretty late. Most off-game nights we eat dinner at 9 or 10 pm and after games, we usually eat at 12 midnight or even 1 am on some occasions.

The facilities are much different than what you see in the US. I have great respect for the elite players that represent national teams outside the US.

De nuestra mayor consideración:

Nos dirigimos a usted con motivo de invitarlo a participar de la 11º edición del Torneo Nacional de Básquet, categoría Sub 15 (96-97) “OSVALDO SAYAS”, que se llevará a cabo los días 11,12 y 13 del mes de noviembre de 2011.

 

Éste acontecimiento que convoca a clubes de todo el país lleva a cabo con el fin de los chicos puedan mejorar el nivel de juego, generar amistad y sobre todo motivar a los chicos a que consideren a la institución como su segundo hogar.

 

El torneo será en nuestro estadio cubierto ubicado el campo de deportes sito en Ocampo y Marconi de la ciudad de Cañada de Gómez.

FIBA-Américas - Se da a conocer el itinerario del
Final Four de la Liga de las Américas 2010/2011

FIBA-Américas anunció el itinerario del Final Four de la Liga de las Américas a celebrarse del 4 al 6 de marzo en el Gimnasio del USBI, hogar de los Halcones de la Universidad Veracruzana de Xalapa, México.
 

Los equipos participantes en el Final Four son:

Halcones de Xalapa (MEX),
Halcones Rojos de Veracruz (MEX),
Capitanes de Arecibo (PUR) y
Regatas Corrientes (ARG).

 

El Final Four se jugará en formato de "todos contra todos" y el equipo que termine primero se convertirá en el nuevo campeón de América.

Los partidos se van a transmitir en vivo por FOX Sports y en Internet libre de costo en www.fibaamericastv.com.
Las estadísticas y noticias estarán disponibles en www.fibaamericas.com.

FIBA Americas - FIBA Americas League Final Four Schedule Released

FIBA Americas announced the schedule of the FIBA Americas League Final Four to be played on March 4-6 at USBI Gym, home of Halcones de la Universidad Veracruzana de Xalapa.
 

The participants in the Final Four are

Halcones de  Xalapa (MEX),
Halcones Rojos de Veracruz (MEX),
Capitanes de Arecibo (PUR) and
Regatas Corrientes (ARG).

The Final Four is going to be played in a Round Robin format and the team that finishes first is the new champion of America.

The games will be televised on FOX Sports and in the Internet free of cost in www.fibaamericastv.com.
The stats and news will be available on www.fibaamericas.com.

FIBA-Américas - Definidas las Sedes y el Itinerario de la Liga de las Américas 2010/2011

FIBA-Américas anunció las sedes y el itinerario de la cuarta edición de la Liga de las Américas que comienza el 9 de diciembre en Mar del Plata, Argentina.


Un total de 16 equipos formarán parte de la competencia de clubes mas importante de América. El campeón defensor de este evento lo es Peñarol Mar del Plata, que ha ganado este torneo en dos ocasiones (2007/2008 y 2009/2010).
 

Las sedes de este evento son: Mar del Plata, Argentina (Grupo A), Xalapa, México (Grupo B), Ibarra, Ecuador (Grupo C) y Arecibo, Puerto Rico (Grupo D). Este torneo se va a televisar por FOX Sports.
 

El formato del torneo para esta edición cambió, usando el mismo formato de la primera edición donde los dos mejores equipos en el grupo pasan a la segunda fase. En la segunda fase se realizarán dos cuadrangulares, uno en el Sur (1-3 de febrero) y otro en el Norte (8-10 de febrero). Los dos mejores de ambos cuadrangulares pasan al Final Four que se celebrará del 22 al 24 de febrero del 2011.

FIBA Americas - Schedule and host cities of the 2010/2011 FIBA Americas League announced

FIBA Americas announced the schedule and host cities of the 2010/2011 FIBA Americas League that starts on December 9 in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

A total of 16 teams will be part of the most important club competition in America. The defending champion is Peñarol Mar del Plata of Argentina who has two championships in this tournament (2007/2008 and 2009/2010).

The host cities of this event are: Mar del Plata, Argentina (Group A), Xalapa, Mexico (Group B), Ibarra, Ecuador (Group C) and Arecibo, Puerto Rico (Group C). This tournament will be televised on FOX Sports.

The tournament format for this edition changed, going back to the same format used in the first edition where the two best teams per group reach the second round. In the second round there will be two quadrangular, the first played in the South on February 1-3 and the other in the North from February 8-10. The two best teams in each quadrangular reach the Final Four to be played on February 22-24 of 2011.

la 13a copa invitacional de baloncesto club deportivo young people, se realizara del 9 al 14 de octubre de 2010, en proximo dias les enviamos los hoteles y restaurantes de la ciudad.

En cada carpeta se debe escribir el nombre del club , colegio o escuela y entre parentesis el nombre de la ciudad o departamento, y reenviarla al correo, para que las demas delegaciones sepan los equipos que asistiran al socorro y poder hacer la programacion dos dias antes.

FIBA-Américas – Comienza a caminar la Liga de las Américas 2010/2011

La cuarta edición de la exitosa Liga de las Américas ha comenzado a caminar. Con un formato diferente en relación a la edición anterior se estará desarrollando la competencia de clubes más importante del continente, contando con 16 clubes y se jugará un total de 42 partidos.

Esta edición de la Liga de las Américas se jugará en las mismas fechas de la anterior y con la segura intervención de los países mas poderosos en competencias de ligas. Los clubes que van a participar se confirmarán próximamente. La difusión de este torneo va a ser por la importante cadena de televisión FOX Sport.

“Estamos muy felices de poder anunciar la continuidad de este proyecto de nuestra Institución”, dijo el Presidente de FIBA-Américas, Sr. Horacio Muratore.

“No ha sido nada fácil y entendemos que seguirá siendo un problema en el aspecto económico, pero hemos contado con el interés de los clubes y el apoyo de las Federaciones de las Ligas más importantes del Continente y por lo tanto, seguiremos apostando a ella”.

La primera fase dará comienzo a principios de Diciembre de 2010 y el Final Four se jugará a fines de Febrero de 2011 con el siguiente formato de disputa:

7, 8 y 9 de Diciembre/2010

Grupo A: Primer Cuadrangular en el Sur = 6 Juegos (dos juegos por día)

Todos contra todos por el sistema de puntos.

14, 15 y 16 de Diciembre/2010

Grupo B: Primer Cuadrangular en el Norte = 6 Juegos (dos juegos por día)

Todos contra todos por el sistema de puntos.
 
11, 12 y 13 de Enero/2011

Grupo C: Segundo Cuadrangular en el Sur = 6 Juegos (dos juegos por día)

Todos contra todos por el sistema de puntos.

18, 19 y 20 de Enero/2011

Grupo D: Segundo Cuadrangular en el Norte = 6 Juegos (dos juegos por día)

Todos contra todos por el sistema de puntos.

Segunda Fase:

Todos los partidos se juegan con las reglas oficiales de FIBA y a los efectos de cualquier clasificación en la que dos o más equipos terminaran igualados en puntos, también se aplicarán las previsiones descriptas en los reglamentos de FIBA.
 

Argentina, Brasil, México y Puerto Rico han sido la base de esta importante competencia en sus tres ediciones anteriores. Peñarol de Mar del Plata (Argentina) quedó campeón en el 2007-2008 y 2009-2010 mientras que Universo/BRB (Brasil) ganó en el 2008-2009.




El Secretario General de FIBA-Américas, Alberto García, dijo que en los próximos días se comenzara con el registro de los clubes participantes, mencionando que además de los países nombrados, clubes de Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay y Venezuela en el sur y de Costa Rica y República Dominicana en el centro, han mostrado interés en participar.

Los partidos del Centrobasket en vivo por mediasports.tv

Todos los partidos del Campeonato Centrobasket 2010 a celebrarse del 5 al 11 de julio en la República Dominicana se transmitirán en vivo por www.mediasports.tv.

Los fanáticos interesados en ver los partidos por Internet puede visitar mediasports.tv para ver los paquetes disponibles para todo el torneo o por juego.

Este torneo tendrá la participación de diez equipos nacionales de Centro América y el Caribe que han sido divididos en dos grupos de cinco cada uno. El Grupo A tiene a Islas Vírgenes Británicas, Islas Vírgenes de  Estados Unidos, Jamaica, Panamá y la República Dominicana. El Grupo B cuenta con Belice, Cuba, México, Puerto Rico y Trinidad & Tobago.

En la ronda preliminar cada equipo juega contra los otros cuatro de su grupo (5 al 9 de julio). Los mejores dos de cada grupo continúan participando y los restantes seis terminan su participación en el evento. Los cuatro que siguen juegan en la semifinal (1A vs. 2B, 1B vs. 2A) el día 10 de Julio y el próximo día se juega la final.

El Centrobasket 2010 clasifica los mejores cuatro al Campeonato FIBA Américas 2011 (Pre-Olímpico); los mejores ocho a los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe 2010 en Mayagüez, Puerto Rico y los mejores tres a los Juegos Panamericanos 2011 en Guadalajara, México.

La Asociación de Baloncesto Sudamericano (ABASU) anunció la fecha de la Liga Sudamericana de Clubes que comienza el 21 de octubre del 2010.

Quimsa Santiago del Estero (Argentina) es el campeón defensor y va a ser la sede del Grupo B de la competencia.

Copa de Clubes 'Décimo Aniversario' BÁSQUET MAR del PLATA 2010

CAP Eventos, informa que aún se encuentra abierta la inscripción para la COPA DE CLUBES, BÁSQUET Mar del Plata 2010 para categorías menores, masculino y femenino, iniciando los festejos de nuestro DÉCIMO ANIVERSARIO. Al mismo tiempo se llevará a cabo el tradicional encuentro de Premini y Mini, también para ambos sexos. La misma se llevará a cabo del 17 al 20 de abril del corriente año.
