Morgan Wootten compiled a remarkable 1,274-192 record in his 46-year coaching career at DeMatha High School.
Coach Wootten's teams won five national championships, finished with at least 20 wins in 44 consecutive seasons, and had a number one ranking in the Washington, DC area in 20 of his last 33 years as coach. Coach Wootten retired in 2002 as the winningest, and one of the most respected, coaches ever.
Coach Wootten has sent more than 160 high school players on to play college basketball, and a dozen have played in the NBA. In this first video of this series, Coach Wootten demonstrates his most effective full-court press breakers, fast breaks, and sideline inbound plays. Wootten uses live demonstration to teach each offensive set, and includes great drills to build each offense. Foundations for Successful Basketball Half-Court Offenses
Coach Wootten covers all aspects of his half-court offense including man-to-man offense, zone offense, and half-court inbound plays. He begins by demonstrating man-to-man offenses out of 1-4 and 5-out alignments. Next he shares his zone offense, demonstrating how it can break down any zone defense. Wootten then teaches inbound plays from the sideline and under the basket which can create quick scoring opportunities against either man-to-man or zone defenses! Great for junior high and high school-level coaches! 50 minutes.
Foundations for Successful Basketball Full-Court Defenses
Using live on-court demonstration, Wootten takes you on a guided tour of his most effective full-court man-to-man and zone defenses. He teaches full-court man-to-man defenses which focus on ball denial on the inbound pass, primary traps in the corners, and secondary traps from varying directions. Wootten then teaches his 1-3-1 and 2-2-1 full-court zone defenses. Next he shows full-court trapping drills to teach players to communicate and to keep them from becoming overly-aggressive. Foundations for Successful Basketball Half-Court Defenses
Coach Wootten demonstrates his most effective half-court man-to-man and zone defenses. His man-to-man instruction includes both aggressive and passive trapping defenses inside of the half-court line. Wootten's half-court zone defenses include the 2-2-1 trap, the 1-3-1 trap, and the 2-3. Included are half-court trap drills to teach players how to work together as a team and when and where to trap on the court. Great for junior high and high school-level coaches! 45 minutes.
Foundations for Successful Basketball Fundamental Drills and Games
In this video, Coach Wootten provides basic drills and games to help coaches teach and reinforce individual and team offensive and defensive skills. Drills and games focus on dribbling, passing, shooting, defensive stance, and defensive shuffling. About Coach Morgan Wootten
Morgan Bayard Wootten (born April 21, 1931 in Durham, North Carolina, United States) is a former high school basketball coach.
From 1956 to 2002 he coached at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. The coach with the most wins in high school basketball history, a number of his players went on to play in the NBA, including Adrian Dantley. Wootten gained legendary status in 1965, when his DeMatha team beat Lew Alcindor's Power Memorial Academy and ended their 71-game winning streak. "I know of no finer coach at any level-high school, college or pro. I stand in awe of him," says the legendary former UCLA coach John Wooden.
At the end of Wootten's career, he ranked eighth place in the nation among career high school coaches, according to USA Today Magazine, with 1,274 wins and 192 losses. He is the only high school basketball coach to ever be inducted into the basketball hall of fame.
Wootten authored five books (including
A Coach for All Seasons,
Coaching Basketball Successfully, and
From Orphans to Champions). His youngest son, Joe Wootten, follows his lead and is a successful basketball coach at Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia. Both of them lead one of the premiere camps in the nation, Coach Wootten's Basketball Camp. This camp is held in Frostburg, Maryland at Frostburg State University.
In October 2000, he was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach. He is the only high school coach in the Hall.
